So what are you in for?

^Being sodomized by a khajit.

In for stripping down, breaking into someone's home, hiding in a corner and jumping out when they enter at night.

Vandir was hired by a wealthy family to rid their ancestral tomb of a spirit that was haunting it and was stopping the family members from paying their respects, when he arrived at the location and ventured far into the derelict tomb he found no trace of any spirit - and no sign of anyone actually entering the tomb for some time. As he was about to make his departure from the tomb he was ambushed by two burly men and knocked unconscious, when he awoke he found himself being charged with desecrating a family tomb. Powerless against the accusations of the family he quickly found himself thrown into a prison, it's been fourteen years since he freedom was stripped from him and he doesn't seem to be leaving any time soon.

What's the punishment in Skyrim for Necrophilia? Just asking.

Now that's like NOTHING compared to Morrowind. Kthxbai!

touching a fork that wasn't mine

Hopefully Skyrim will have a decent crime and punishment system - on the other hand, it seems likely that in cyrodiil, the heinous crime of touching somebody else's fork would be enough to have to deported.

I killed a guard in the woods once. We were all alone. I don't know what came over me.

I don't know how they knew when I got back to town. But they did.

It hasn't really been confirmed that we'll start in prison, but since it's an Elder Scrolls tradition by now, it does not seem unlikely. If we do start in prison again, I hope that the reason we were arrested is kept mysterious, like in Morrowind or Oblivion. Because I don't want the game to tell me anything more about who I am than the story requires.

As to what sort of reason for being in prison I would create for my character, it would depend on what sort of character I create. If my character is a thief or murderer, than it's pretty obvious, whereas if I'm going for a more noble sort, I might think of my character as having been wrongfully accused, or maybe a prisoner of war, seeing as there is supposed to be a civil war going on, so my character's only crime could well have been helping whichever faction he agrees with more.

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time - there's a civil war going on, after all. Depends on the character though, I always play several.

I'm more interested in how I'll get out of jail this time... a dragon trashing the town (and the prison with it) would be cool.

This sounds really nice actually. Starting in jail in a minor town that gets burned to ashes and you are the only surviver ^^

The escape through a town attacked by a dragon sounds cool. As long as it is skippable on subsequent playthroughs and chucks us out with little to no hand holding afterwards I'm good.

I stole a Horker and rode on it into battle.
My Nord was drunk and later found out it were guards...

Anyway I'm not sure if we'll start in jail.
Having a mentor and all...

I'm going to be original and roleplay that Alga has a friend who ran whatever jail place we'll be in. Alga, out of sheer curiosity, wanted to see what it'd be like to spend the night in a cell, so her friend arranged that for her.

Putting Alga in prison clothes and securing her in easily removable chains, her friend ushered her kindly into a cell and told her, "See you in the morning."

There. :D

Isn't it quite possible we'll meet this mentor shortly after the "escape"?. Perhaps he helps us do it

My theory is this:

Seeing as there is a civil war going on you will be caught by one of the opposing sides. They will accuse you of being some sort of spy or working with the enemy.

Or maybe it will be as simple as us over hearing a conversation between two guards while you're in prison "Who is the new prisoner?" "They found him down by the outer wall after curfew, nobody knows who he is" "looks like a (Insert enemy name here) to me" "I'm not so sure, if so they must be recruiting anyone these days this one looks like he hasn't eaten in weeks".

A group of mercenaries killed my family while I was away. It took many years, but I tracked each one down and slew him!
(not original: I got it from David Gemmels books about the character Waylander :D )

I like the food and the guards let me study the dead prisoners. It was just easier to settle in.

Well, the character is the heir of my previous characters, but because of the political changes during the centuries since, the family was recently betrayed and the heir jailed.. or something. yeah I'll go with this.

Am liking the idea of being imprisoned in a smallish town, and the game beginning with a dragon attack, breaking the prison wall or something. Can just imagine it now, walking out into the sunlight and witnessing the chaos. Perhaps the player has to kill the dragon, and that is why people think he may be a dragonborn, and then gets a mentor etc. Who knows.

I was walking through the woods and every guard i passed was yelling "Why won't you die?!?!?!?". By the tenth guard to say this something snapped and i took off all my armour and clothes and slew them all by beating them to death with a live Skyrim Mudcrab.
