I'm wondering if we will be allowed to give male names to females and vice versa. I want to name my female protagonist Nicholas and my son Sue.

I still don't get people's obsession as to whether or not your characters name will be said by Codsworth... It is a tiny detail that has lost all of the surprise and coolness factor already. Had they not announced it would have been a nice surprise.

With that said my first characters name will be Araxus. My next guy (melee guy) will be named Sir Sledge.

Females Asa, Dahlia or Maya. Maybe Eve too or Ava.

That's assuming it's being said by only Codsworth and nobody else. In any case, most of those names would be in-universe and I always choose such names, out-of-place names turn me off right away. I always go to UESP to find names when I start a TES character.
