I didn't think it was a new land area, just a fort/castle located somewhere in Skryim which I presumed would be near Dawnstar?

I think there is supposed to be a new realm to enter into through some kind of gate.

I thought it was going to be through the stone circle near Morthal (those that have cured themselves from being a vampire will understand me here) but apparently the gates are near the edges of the map.

The castles I was hoping wasn't going to just pop up in a part of the map we've already explored with no explanation other than it was always there but apparently one is in the reach (I think between Markarth & Morthal due to it being on map between city symbols in trailer) and the other is going to be up in the north on an island (less of an obvious pop up)

Possibly true but the UESP claims that the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Fort_Dawnguard is located somewhere in the Rift. I don't think there will be many outdoor locations to explore (nothing like Shivering Isles) but the trailer did show some new areas, so it'll either be like you said, a new realm that we can access through a portal, but my guess is that it'll all be underneath the fort, sort of like Blackreach.

Edit: Just re-watched the trailer, and it shows that there is a some kind of portal that opens up for you. Possibly leading to a new land mass.

so it isn't between Morthal & Markarth then which is good as that's the reach. Hopefully it is up in the mountains right on the edge of the map as opposed to somewhere that we've passed through regularly and not seen it (as it obviously wasn't there).

I'm looking forward to it though. I can't wait

i think its been said that new areas on the skyrim map will open up with the DLC but integrate it to make it seem your not playing an add-on. if you look at skyrims map alot of the edges are unaccessible so i'm hoping they will expand them

New content. I really need an excuse to get back into skyrim. I loved the game, but I felt like there was little to do after 200 hours.

Honestly, in the last few full expansions for TES games, I had more fun just exploring the new land's every nook and absorbing its lore than really doing the main quest. I actually never beat Bloodmoon's MQ, but I spent a lot of time there in the snow having fun.

So, I'm looking forward to a new place to explore with its own vibe and lore. If it has to be something more specific, though, I'd say new items (weapons, armor, clothes, baubles for my house, etc).
