What are your thoughts on combat?

Post » Sat Aug 31, 2013 10:33 pm

I beleive we need a better system for combat. When being attacked by someone with a greatsword or long axe their reach far exceeds the weapons visual length.I also don't like that you have no ability to block while dual weilding.I beleive block while dual weilding should be lessened, but you should be able to do it.I also think we should be able to perform some combo attacks. What are your thoughts on bettering combat? What is its importence in future titles to you?

If this is a suggestion, it should go in its appropriate thread in the TES series board.

Anyways, I like the combat. It could always be better though.

I don't use two-handed weapons much, but they do need some advantage like that because they don't do a great lot of damage and take ages to swing. On the other hand I use dual-wielding a lot because they do twice the damage, so not being able to block is a natural disadvantage. I'm not known for always playing by the rules, but it seems strange to take away disadvantages. It's like taking away gravity so a tall building won't fall over, but that's just me.

I think its great. Best its ever been, and even better when the hud is off imo. I don't think we need combo attacks, and I don't care about them. Blocking with two weapons I do think should have been implemented though. You can parry and block with one hand, so not sure why that wasn't in.

edit:

Actually yes I am, blocking didn't fit in with their dual wield feature of using two hands for 1 function each.

The no block with dual weapons decision was obviously to make a balance with the additional damage when dual wielding.

Actually, it should be easier to defend with 2 weapons, but I totally understand and don't even know how that could be handled better.

About the combat, I use sword and shield but I never block, unless I'm under a flying dragon breath attack. It seems much better to constantly stun the enemy with the power attacks and never leave room for their moves.

I recently started an Unarmed character. I just installed the Dual Wielding Parry mod, and tied block to the LB on the controller. It is also the sprint button , but seeing as I don't do both at the same time, it works out wonderfully. In the vanilla game you get the perk for that. Even better!

I too am no fan of combination button moves. I mean a move that consists of a double tap, a hold and/or with the tug of the stick, I don't consider a combination move. I remember trying to play Star Wars and that was utterly ridiculous. 7, 8, ... 10 button moves!!? Are you serious!!!??

Now, I think that Assassin's Creed has one of the best combat mechanic structures.

The combat is not bad, though it could use some improvements.

Bethesda should add locational damage, different types of attacks, and make an overhaul on unarmed combat by adding new abilities and what-not.

It's a billion times better than Morrowind and Oblivion.. but there's a lot of room for improvement of course. Granted I'm content with what we have now. I'd like BGS to put their focus on their cities, NPC's, books and dialogue in TES VI.

Best in the series no doubt, but could of course be better. Locational damage would be an excellent addition.

Title should be "What are your thoughts on clicking your mouse," it'd retain the exact same meaning.

Wasn't exciting nor did I even find it boring. Just... meh. It was more of the same, compared to Oblivion. At least they managed to get rid of their supply of kryptonite so they could solve the problems they've had with animations for years.

Least that's out of the way.

There are 3 major flaws of skyrim combat system IMHO even though it(s definetely the best of the TES series so far :

- no thrust damage and animations

- no localized damage and attack animations of the AI that often hit farther than it looks

- no riposte option and/or dodging button

If you incorporate that , the combat would be awesome , i hope for this in the next TES

Locational damage would have been great, but is a bear to program properly in a massive game like Skyrim. Not impossible by any means, just goddamed difficult with all the unscripted stuff that can happen.

One thing I really would like a a Bioware-like ability to give orders to my companions. Even pausing the game and laying in a plan, or simply activating a set of battle marcos for, say, Lydia (or any other companion) that sets their combat behavior. Because really, the companions we can get know how to fight, and should know that stepping in front of the PC's greatsword mid swing, or slowing moving in with a drawn bow, cutting off our line of sight, or any of the innumerable bad habits they display are in face intolerable from a combat partner. The number of times I've been on the dregs of my health and punched Lydia or any of the others with my bow out of pure frustration is uncountable. Being able to give commands; "keep [x] distance from me unless [n] occurs. Use [x] weapon/spell unless you're attacked with [y]" and others. That way we can actually set up a pair of professional fighting working in concert, rather than one controlled fighter and one meat-shield/arrow/spell magnet that constantly breaks cover and runs out into the open.

Localized damage would perhaps not need much details in a game like skyrim , maybe just allowing hits at the head/throat to do more damage than body hits would be enough to add to the experience

Combat is not impressive, it can be better, other games offer much than Skyrim in combat department.

I am definitely against button bashing sequence (i.e. Gods of War and SW:Force Unleashed).

I know this feature will not work in TES, but I did like the VATs in FO, especially how critical chance % damage plays out. For TES, let's just say if my Archer shoots an arrow at the enemy's head, there should be more damage (unless the enemy is wearing a protective helmet) than aiming at the torso.

Other than that, the combat system is definitely better with V than III and IV (never played I and II).

Vanilla Combat is about the best of the TES Series. Although the gameplay mechanic itself needs an overhaul not least with the Enemy AI and enhanced capabilities in first person and third person for variety in strike, parry and block.

Modded combat is a different experience and more satisfying IMO.

In the next elder scrolls game I would like a 3rd way of attack with swords. As all of you know we have the default attack and power attack. I would like a 3rd option that deals weaker damage than the default attack we have but offers protection from stabbing behind a shield. Have your shield up blocking enemy attacks while you use your sword to stab at the enemy simultaneously. It will deal less damage than normal attack but offers great protection with a shield up. Roman style. :)

My thoughts exactly. There seems to be a steady improvement to the melee combat with every new TES game. I can't wait to see what Bethesda can cook up for TES VI.

I thought Skyrim's combat was better then Oblivion's and it definitely was better then Morrowind's, I mostly like the idea of using magic along with a weapon at the same time which really wasn't really possible until skyrim.

You could in Oblivion. Heck, I would go as far to say that Oblivion's magic casting was more versatile than Skyrim's. With Oblivion's, you could cast a spell even if you were holding a weapon in one hand and a shield in the other. You could even cast spells if you were wielding a two-handed weapon.
