What's so bad about the combat system?

Post » Sat Sep 03, 2011 4:45 pm

I mean honestly I don't know what people want. It's an RPG there will always be a health bar that will be hard to drain. If you ran around stabbing people and one-shotting them like in real life it would be boring. The only way I can see combat getting very realistic is if you are you using the Kinect and its detecting your life like movements.
I saw that 4 guy podcast and that guy was complaining about how it was dumb that it took forever to kill a guy. If that was the case you would have to be very kill-able your self which would be awful with bandits gang-in up on you and dragons fire-bombing you. I don't know the combat seems pretty bad ass to me right now I like the hack and slash and the finishing moves just make it all the more bad-ass.

How would you change the combat to make it better in your eyes?

What was the complaint exactly?

Oblivion combat was fine.
As long as we don't get Fallout 3 bullet sponges then there shouldn't be complaints.

I would have to actually play it before I could make a decision like that its not even out yet. Also people want their games to be easy and action oriented and I hate that I love difficulty and I love the RPG.

Lol we have same Avatar. Agree with your sig.

I don't find anything wrong with the combat at all. They only I would change is that there's some way to effectively dodge. Very hard to do in RPG's.

Are you complaining about complainers?

The combat in the official trailer looked good. But from what we've heard, it could be vastly improved.

Nothing that I've seen, it looks great to me.Granted, hit detection could be better, but that's something that's hard to do in an open-world RPG.

You serious? People have been complaining about the Melee combat system since Oblivion and now a lot of the previews are saying it hasn't changed much and they are disappointed .

Nothings wrong. I think all playstyles look and sound fun, balanced, and rewarding.

That's more to do with the balance.Stealth and Magic has been upgraded but melee combat hasn't, so the melee lovers feel left out.Melee didn't really need much of an upgrade though, all it needed in my opinion was better animations and bashing, which it has.

I agree with this it all looks fun Oblivion combat was acceptable in my opinion but how can we truly know what we want changed or not changed the game is not out yet and a lot of people don't like the combat because they are used to games like God of War and Devil May Cry but these games are all about exploration anyways. Sure the combat could have been made better in Oblivion I can say that because I played that game but from what I have seen and read it looks a lot better and with better animations and new play styles it looks rather varied we just have to wait and play it to make a valid actual judgment.

Nobody is saying the system is crap.

The system is great.

It could be more awesome, but it's still awesome.

I think that the melee combat looks great :toughninja: . Granted it could be a little bit more faster paced, but then again I think the melee combat is going for a more realistic approach. To how it is handled and the way the animations look. Its not as flashy as a lot of other games out there, but the reason for that is the Elder Scrolls has never been centrally combat focused.

Pretty much.
It just needed some tweaks, and I think Skyrim already gave some, adding more tactical choices by making your weapon decisions matter more and such...

... then again for some people tactics stop at "limb damage"...

i think complaint was that it took a very long time to even kill someone

i can actually support this side, in oblivion it was pretty stupid i couldn't kill a woman who sells frilly clothes in just a few slashes

I primarilly play a mage in Oblivion, and i plan to make my main a mage in Skyrim.

Why?

Because...
A) Spells are badass!
2) Spells have high damage, and being a mage means im not going to have as high HP as a warrior. Poof! I just sped up the combat lethality while making it so much cooler in the prosses!

Melee I think needs to be slightly less hack and slash/spammy, and evolve to have more momentum, dodging, and advanced maneuvers added in, like melee versions of spells in the form of combat techniques that use stamina.

The whole "health" thing should really go.

The amount of damage a warrior can take compared to a frail old woman is maybe 2x or 3x. Severing a jugular will kill them both.

A warrior's increased survivability comes from his armor, and his ability to dodge/parry blows. Of course, to implement that, you either have to have an extremely detailed combat system (like Mount and Blade) or use dice rolls and "whiffs," which people seem to hate. I understand what they represent, and find them more believable than always hitting someone but taking 50 hits to kill them.

I have no complaints at all about the combat; looks to be the best in the series (although this is coming from a mage-play and so far the magic just seems godly >.>)

There will always be those who are unappeased, however, and the minority of almost any group is practically always more.... annoyingly loud when it comes to voicing their opinion.

Absolutely.

More games should draw inspiration from Mount&Blade's combat system. That one man was a genius!

How so?
Didn't seem any more amazing than most modern FPS's...?

(Strictly combat wise I mean)

Yeah the world and the exploration and the attention to the story and also the pure joy of roleplaying easily overshadows all of the games flaws.

a "friend of mine" told me that they watched the PAX demos online. i scolded them for doing that saying that is was morally reprehensible and that they were going to hell when they died. i wont go to hell because i would never watch leaked footage.

as it was described to be by a third party (as in not me but someone else who's soul is eternally damned) when people were playing the regular game when enemies hit them they actually lost a good chunk of health out in each hit. the other person said that you lost anywhere from 1/4 to over 1/3 of their health each time. meaning you could die very easily if surrounded or you dont dodge or block. this is very good news for me because that is how i had oblivion set up and this means less modding on my end. :)

the only people that are going to have an issue with it are lazy gamers that feel like they should be able to just stand in one spot and trade blows with 10 npcs and still come out on top. i cant wait to see the threads similar to those posted by people complaining about how hard witcher 2 was cause they couldnt stand and just spam attacks anymore like in assassins creed.

edit: even though i would never watch leaked footage, just by listening to a description of it have i put my eternal soul at risk?
