What if Bioware and Bethesda were to join forces

Post » Sun Nov 14, 2010 10:43 pm

This may be a bit random but I was just thinking on what would happen if Bioware and Bethesda were to join forces to create an Elder Scrolls game. With Bethesda designing the game world and the interaction within it, you could have Bioware worry about the story writting and character development within the game. Obviously Bioware would follow the lore already set out from previous games. It's just the one thing that has bugged me about previous Elder Scrolls games is that the story has been quite poor when compared to Mass Effect or Dragonage (both of which had fantastic stories but had worlds with little interaction and exploration elements when compared to the Elder Scrolls). If you were to take the best of both companies surely you would have a winner.

I am quite ready to be shot down and crucified for saying this, but I think it would be.... at the very least interesting! Oh and Todd Howard would still be in charge obviously!

Let the criticism begin

Then get ready, bub!

I don't see how Dragon Age, 1 or 2, had a better story than any Elder Scrolls game, except maybe Arena. Dragon Age 1 specifically was pretty straight-forward. Darkspawn invasion. Kill dragon. The end.
I can agree with character development, as I don't think I've seen any game develop characters as well as Dragon Age 1 and 2 have, but overall story? Nah. There are a lot of intricate details going on in the Elder Scrolls plots that people don't immediately appreciate. Even Oblivion gets under-credited for all the in-depth stuff it had going on because it wasn't as in-your-face as Morrowind.

I only played Mass Effect for a couple of hours and never played the second one, nor do I really remember many other BioWare games, so meh.

1st before anything else, EA has to go. Now onto the question

I don't know if it would be a good idea. You would get one heck of a game but the problem is you have two conflicting styles of development at work. Bioware games are usually linear with openess, choices. Beth it's linear for like 40 minutes and then it's total openess but minimal choice decisions unless we are talking about Fallout.

It's not that hard, we just need the Devs to work harder on it. Heck Fallout 3's main story could've been a lot better had they focused a bit more on the details and other issues.

Only if EA has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with it. I've seen too many good games turn into drek in their hands.

This is in the wrong section by the way. Should be in Elder Scrolls General Discussion since it has nothing that pertains to Skyrim.

Now that thats out of the way, I've often thought of the same thing however I doubt Bethesda and Bioware would ever team. It would basically mean that Bioware would have to work for Bethesda, since each company would want to make their own vision of the game.

There is really only one way it could work, in DA the emotions displayed was amazing, the player actually felt as the game did. Duncan died, you know, he was easy to like, I loved the way he handled situations without violence, he didnt look to good, but it made me sad when he died, made me feel bad for Allister for losing such a father-like figure. I never feel that in Bethesda games. If Bethesta could get you to actually feel realistic emotion, it would be unbeatable. No exception.

Not saying for a second that Dragon Age is better because it is not, it does however have some feautres that would improve Skyrim if implemented character develpoment being one. Bethesda are the king of RPG's it doesn't mean that certain aspects of their games can't be improved uopn however

Both groups have positive attributes in their game. Beth allows you to do whatever you want and Bioware is really good with capturing emotion, choices and telling a good story (When they have there head on straight), that's the important part when Bioware truly tries unlike DA2, when they truly try they can make a really good game. It would be interesting although we do have two conflicting group ideas with the 2 development studios.

There would be a collosal conflict of interest and probably a fight for creative possession. Lies, murder, and romance. Oh my!

I'd expect the game to have forced romances, awful dialogue, and a straightforward story.

Let's leave Bioware to their games, and Bethesda to theirs. That way, I can avoid one and buy the other.

Combining Bioware with Bethesda would be a disaster - you would have companions arguing over whether you should kill Alduin or let him live

Bioware are overrated for their storytelling / character creating abilities. Bethesda doesn't need them.

Bioware has much more memorable and put together npcs. They should stay competitors so each company can raise he bar over each other.

Better designed characters? Maybe. But I find characters like Sheogorath, the imperial guards, M'aiq, etc. to be far more memorable than characters like Jack or Grunt.

A bit random? Nah, Id say VERY random. Studios merge when one of them is closing down, and I doubt any of them are anytime soon.
