Would be fun if instead of a horse for mount we got some sort of alligator/lizard type creature that could crawl through the swamps as well as swim underwater. Maybe even be able to climb up larger trees.

Those are pretty awesome pictures, Luke. I especially like the giant worm one. Bethesda doesn't really have any super massive creatures in their game world (apart from daedric princes).

When I think Black Marsh, I think:

  • navigable canols with boats and rafts sailed in real time by the player
  • lots of underwater life and predators that attack your boat (spears please)
  • very thick vegetation with a lot of hidden dangerous fauna, swarming insects and poisonous plants
  • a generally high fantasy magical and dark atmosphere, even more alien than Morrowind's; high contrasts between the depressingly claustrophobic inner canols and the peacefully calm misty lakeview shores with fishing villages and their traders boats
  • a lot of variety in settlements (very weird culture and architecture) for the different Argonian tribes and more types of subraces

For me Black Marsh would be the ultimate adventure for a TES setting and I really hope Bethesda has already chosen it for TES VI. I can't even start thinking of the jawdropping beauty they could pull off with the next generation of hardware.

Amazing pics&artwork! the more I think about it, the more I believe Black Marsh would be a fantastic place for a great game. The mysterious land itself and the trees could play a role in the main story.

Untill Bethesda perfects their animation system, and can implement various different animations for the same character, Black Marsh should take a back seat.

Tree climbing, swamp plodding, swimming, Argonians should be able to tree jump, stuff like that. Black Marsh would probably be the most difficult province to pull off (or Valenwood).

Yea, those animations should look [censored] great, you'd really feel in a complete alien place with all the weird movement everywhere under the water, up in the trees...And I agree Black Marsh is difficult to do right, but I kinda trust Bethesda know their limits and won't reduce Black Marsh to a major visual disappointment after all their work to make it rich and mysterious in the lore so far.

The problem with Black Marsh, as someone else pointed out, is that the majority of people may not like it. The reason being because they can't relate to lizard people as well as they can regular humans (this is probably the same reason that humans are the dominant species in Star Wars). It would mostly appeal to the more hardcoe Elder Scrolls and Fantasy fans. That said, perhaps Bethesda can satisfy both audiences. A lot of you would prefer a fresh game for Black Marsh, which is perfectly understandable, but suppose Bethesda released an expansion for it? Or in the Elder Scrolls VI, there could be sections of every province. I think the later would be ideal. That way, you get a taste of all of them in one game. But then, of course, people will say that Bethesda should save individual provinces for individual games. But honestly, how many Elder Scrolls do you think they will make? To my knowledge, Bethesda still has about 4-5 provinces left untouched, not to mention other civilization in Nirn, or even other planets. There's still plenty of ground that Bethesda could cover.

If you count Daggerfall as having both Hammerfell and High Rock, despite only having the parts around the bay, there are four. Summerset, Valenwood, Elsweyr and Black Marsh.

Also I think that Black Marsh would've been renamed back to Argonia now it's independent.

Exactly. That's four games, if Bethesda were to do each province individually. I don't think that the Elder Scrolls will go on that long, as much as any of us would like it to. All good things must come to an end at some point.

I'm going off topic here, but it does make me wonder. A lot of the major series have gone on for quite a while, like Battlefield and Call of Duty. Both are on their eighth installment. Can they really go on much longer? What franchises will replace them, if any? Just food for thought, I guess...

As long as people buy these games, the series may go on. The concept seems to be successful enough.

Plus, as others have mentioned, there's still more to go to. Just take Yokuda and Thras from the http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/gallery_files/tamriel_westmap.jpg. Pyandonea was also already visible on the Daggerfall Mages Guild globe.

Actually I'd think a large problem in the Black Marsh would be dungeons. Most dungeons have been underground in every game, and that wouldn't make a ton of sense in a swamp as the water should seep in.

Since when has logic stood in the way of dungeons? Most don't make any sense at all. Plus, if you think of the sunken Argonian ziggurats of the books, you can already see a solution. I can also think of huge hollow trees as entry point.

The problem with Black Marsh,... is that the majority of people may not like it.

That can be applied to all the provinces and races. Some people don't like snow and boring viking wanabes, some don't like gipsies and ashlands. That's hardly an issue. The lore has been created for a reason, and the reason is to use it in the games. Black Marsh will have a game sooner or later.

There can be plenty of regular solid land in Black Marsh, it's not like it's all covered in water. There may be hills and mountains too.

If you read the lore on Black Marsh, the entire province is covered in dense jungles with flesh eating flys, disease and all land that literally swallows roads whole (which is why there little to no infraction there) and is almost 100% inhospitable to every living thing other than Argonian's, Hist and the twisted natural creatures who already live there. Only the coastal regions are really open to free movement by other races and when the Legion fought for 'The Battle of Argonia" they weren't able to peruse the Argonian's into the inner swamps. Argonia is NOT the kind of place that can be just opened up for all playable races without altering the lore that makes it interesting.

Yeah, give Black Marsh a few TES games before they even start touching that. An entire province of dense jungles? If you took Oblivion or Skyrim and made it into Black Marsh, it would be a disaster.

Now Hammerfell, or Elsweyr...
