At 0433 this morning I finished my second reading of Roland Gelatt's "The Fabulous Phonograph, 1877-1977". My first read had to have occurred sometime between 1977 (the date of my copy's publication) and the early/mid 1980s, when I began writing completion dates on inside covers.
As to the book itself, it's just what you'd expect; a history of phonographic records and playback equipment from their beginnings up through the mid 1970s, when the LP was king of the hill and seemingly unassailable. It was an enjoyable, easy read but not, I feel, of much appeal to those without a special interest in this field of study.
I had read just over 100 pages in Stephan Donaldson's "Against All Things Ending" before switching over. I hope to finish the Donaldson by year's end, but it's a struggle. Not sure if I'll return to it now or instead start in on any of several recently acquired books.
