What to call a customized class?

Post » Fri Jan 03, 2014 2:13 pm

These days I usually just make my own class. What I struggle with (perhaps too much time on hands? ) is what name to give the class. Most of the time, I stick with 'adventurer' or tongue in cheek 'tourist'.

Despite looking at the major/minor skills used for various gamesas classes, I've never developed a good feel regarding what combination of skills really represents the character's profession. It seems counter-intuitive to me that my char would know at the beginning of a game the name of the specific class he wants to devote his life to. I can see someone choosing more generic occupations such as warrior, rogue, thief, mage or sorcerer but other choices seem rather premature to expect knowledge at the time of character creation.

Do you all have similar questions about what to name your customized class?

I struggle with it too. Usually I try and pick something generic, like Spellweaver, or something lore-based like Tail of Jone.

I always know what kind of character I'm about to start up, so I pick a name I feel fits the abilities my character is going to have, then I put what the class name means to me overall in the description and go from there.

For example, though I don't remember these perfectly and often spend a lot of time editing them before starting so they sound a lot better:

Spellweaver:

Spellweavers have a very strong natural connection to the magical world. Often born under the Atronach, the Apprentice or the Mage, they tend toward arrogance and eschew less flashy uses of magical power. A Spellweaver does not conjure assistance, use enchanted items or potions; their pride in their own abilities means that they must do everything directly out of their own magicka reserves. Atronach Spellweavers resort to potions of Magicka Restoration out of necessity.

Tail of Jone:

A Khajiit who is more dextrous socially than manually, who sneaks past in the shadows only to knock over a jug of wine, who poorly palms a coinpurse while telling a tale so riveting that the listener feels apologetic to have noticed; this is a Tail of Jone. Highly personable, greatly skilled in dealmaking and conversation, mischievous, and preternaturally good at finding trouble, they often find their hand in the wrong pocket, or themselves in the wrong house.

Usually I just call my custom classes 'Outlander' as it seems to cover any class I create haha.

I usually just go with the default Adventurer. But most of my Stealth classes have always been called Nightingale, and for magic classes Wizard.

When the word "Nightingale" became very important in the Skyrim Thieves Guild, you can imagine my surprise :P

Some of mine at the moment are Warlord, Wizard, Grand Magus, Nomad, Gentleman... So, usually something pretty generic.
