What can Bethesda learn from the Witcher 3?

Post » Fri Jan 29, 2016 1:40 pm

Funnily enough 2015 seems to be the first year since Morrowind that a BGS game did not win GOTY and while we could complain, screech and get salty about it the Witcher 3 was a damn good game, so instead of getting salty about it how about it lets do something constructive and see what Bethesda can learn from the Witcher 3 so it does not get embarrassed in the GOTY awards again.

This forum needs a filter for "Witcher 3". "Witcher 3" seems to get more usage around here than some conjunctions...

I don't think any BSG game would've won a GOTY, if a game like Witcher would've come out this year ^^

And I don't think they should throw everything away and make a game that is similar to Witcher :/

They should keep their strengths, such as the freedom with your gameplay and your character, the detailed open-world, the mod-friendlyness and improve on those points, instead of trying to copy another game.

I really wouldn't want to see a pre-built character, with tons of cutscenes and nudity in a Bethesda title...

it's nice that we have so much variety in today's gaming and different companies that make so many different great games ^_^

Wouldn't be shocked to see it get some rewards next year due to the late release of Fallout.

Oh that does not mean there is not things they can learn from it without being an exact copy, always lessons that can be learned from the most unlikely of sources and just because you are taking notes off another game does not mean you have to abandon what you are known for.

You could post your suggestions for the next TES in the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1581946-official-beyond-skyrim-tes-vi-70/page-7, like everyone else. If you just want to rub Witcher 3's GOTY's in Bethesda's face, there is a dedicated Witcher 3 thread here somewhere.

This is a very childish and un-constructive opening. Nobody got "embarassed". The Witcher was the better game and it won most of the awards, period.

By your logic, was Deus Ex Human Revolution "embarassed" by Skyrim? Because Skyrim murdered the awards in 2011 just like The Witcher in 2015, and I think Deus Ex is still a great rpg.

That is not very constructive sir, I was hoping we could avoid the salt and instead focus on how Bethesda can lift their game, please take a moment to compose yourself and return when you plan on being civil.

As said, there is no need for saltiness, TW3 won the consensus GOTY fair and square, it's a great game.

There is no embarrassment coming second with some 50 GOTY's, around double the adulated MGSV.

If Bethesda release a Fallout 4 GOTY edition, that would be a perfectly acceptable marketing term.

To address the OP's point about learning head on, TW3 had some stand-out emotional main thread and side quest content, significantly building on TW2.

Fallout 4 is a step forward in many ways, but betrays some elements that are much less cutting edge.

To my mind, the lessons are, tell terrific stories and keep the engine fresh.

Sorry my english is a not so good, must have been a mistranslation, please be telling me how you say "thrashed" in english?

Well in all honesty Human Revolution was not a very good game, sure it was enjoyable because it sort of applied the gameplay philosophies that made the original Deus Ex so great and it was well received because we are all HUNGRY for more games like Deus Ex, but looking at it objectively it wasn't a brilliantly constructed game.

Have you tried the FO4 GD or PC issues sections? Witcher 3 is mentioned, a lot. One would think this is the Witcher boards from all the comparison posts I've seen since FO4's release.

They are different games. There is nothing for Bethesda to learn (from Witcher 3) as I see it. Bethesda just needs to keep doing what they are doing and I'll buy their games. I have not nor care to buy The Witcher 3. No judgement, I'm just a fan of TES/FO series and never got into the Witcher games.

Considering the sales figures Fallout 4 are apparently well above Witcher 3's, I honestly don't think they are worried about a few awards. From what Understand, they still snagged a few.

Besides, Fallout 4 released in November. Witcher 3 had a whole eight months extra for patching and DLC to get bedded in.

Let's see which game is still being played by the most players in a years time. I bet it's not the one beginning with W.

You used "thrashed" exactly right. Thrashed means sorely beaten and nobody should tell you differently. :)

It used to get mentioned all the time when Fallout 4 first came out. Not so much anymore.

Save for boss battles, Human Revolution was a good game. Not every game needs to be brilliant, revolutionary and one of a kind. Usually good is, well, good enough. Successfully iterating on the predecessor's winning formula is kind of the point of a sequel, isn't it?

On topic: I still think there's less to learn from TW3 than people believe. Things that work for a narrative-focused RPG with a predefined protagonist don't always work for an exploration-based, free-form sandbox. Borrowing some of TW3's solutions would actually hurt Bethesda. It's always good to watch, learn, anolyze and adapt to your own needs, but let's not behave like Witcher 3 is the holy grail of RPGs (I'm not saying you do, OP, but there are people on this forum who do and it gets tiresome).

Learn from TW3? Absolutely nothing. Please no... they already tried to borrow too heavily from other games with FO4 and sort of lost a little something.

Two separate design philosophies (Beth and CDPR), and in the case of FO4 at least, there exists a fairly deep chasm between genres: Medieval-ish type dark fantasy setting...and a post nuclear apocalyptic setting with a heavy "what's buzzin' cousin" 1950 Americana cultural flavor.

Not interested in seeing a set character, death by cut scene, game from Beth...we already have CDPR and Bioware for those. In fact, I think they may have gone a little too far in that direction already, and are feeling some of the sting of not being able to meld that into their own design philosophy.

Bethesda should stick to what they do: develop rich worlds as their main characters, load them with insane amounts of content and quests, and give us over-the-top gameplay mechanics.

They just need to do their thing a little better next time...unless, of course, they become corporately insane...and just want to sell fewer games.

All I want Bethesda Game Studios to do is write better storyline quests with lots branching paths to complete and choices and consequences, depending on the choices you make and no dialogue wheels.

At least Bethesda Game Studios made some quests timed and failable in Fallout 4 if that is true what some people said a few weeks ago in the Fallout 4 General Discussions topics section.

For me the video game world map of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is not as detailed and rich as the video game world map of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, even The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

Bethesda can learn from The Witcher 3 that I did not like it. I uninstalled it and took it to Gamestop.

They can learn that I am still playing FO:4 , still simming it. Doing it MY way , without Preston the hated.
