What can I expect to find different from FO:3?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 7:21 pm

The 50s era theme had to much presence in fallout 3 and in fallout new vegas theres a cowboy vibe for small towns (like goodsprings) and a 20s for the strip aswell which was in my opinion better delivered unlike fallout 3.

I personally like the "cowboy" theme, but that's just me.
The Sunset Sasparilla was a nice touch aswell.

I found the West Side Story esque Tunnel Snakes a bit out of place too.

You shutup, sir!

Tunnel Snakes [censored] rule. They're the entire reason Fallout 3 was made. That's why the rest of the game svcked: a severe lack of Tunnel Snakes after the tutorial.

I really enjoyed the 50's FO3 theme. The music and ambience was great. I can see why the culture would have stuck, even after 200 years. No progress has been made, people were raised by parents, who were raised by parents, who were raised by parents, brought up in the 50's. It's almost like everything is frozen in time because of the war. I try not to apply normal logic to the FO3 universe.

That being said, I am also a fan of a slightly more modern, cowboy vibe. I think the 50's music and theme made FO3 very atmospheric and creepy.

I wonder what's the reference for the "tunnel" and for the "snake" in a gang of 3 puffy appearing guys.

edit - Talonfire has a point, though. There is something of an explanation for their existense. Even though I still find the their appearance to be a bit overdone.

That's why I always recruit Butch. The lack of Tunnel Snakes just makes the game terrible.

I am so undecided about whether to get FO3 or NV. I′ve seen gameplay of both and I enjoyed watching FO3, but I like those western-guns and... Arrghh!

FO3 is fun to explore. You enter a random subway or building and you're sure to find a surprise or a good fight.
FO:NV is fun mentally and morally provakative (makes you think and question your own morals, which is fun for some) and it's fun to replay and see how a different character plays differently.

FO3 is fun for a playthrough for sure, but you gotta realize that you can only DISCOVER that random Mexican ghoul with a party hat guarding the unique flamethrower once; afterwards he loses his "LOLWAT" factor.
FO:NV, not everyone enjoys having their morals put into jeoprody, or having to think intensively about every little thing they do.

And the same models.
And the same textures.
And the same ghoul models.
And the same super mutant models.

I asked in the other FO3 vs NV thread but I′ll ask here too. Is NV comparable with Deus Ex regarding exploration; you can only get to new areas by advancing through the MQ?
I kinda like to think about why I do stuff instead of just doing them for the heck of it. So in that regard NV would be right up my alley.

Kinda - you can go pretty much anywhere right off the bat. It's more a question of can you kill what dwells there? For example you have to take the scenic route to Vegas due to the fact that the shortcut contains cazadors and deathclaws, who don't believe in fair play, only nomming newbie couriers and the unwary.

Not the same super mutant models. The Vault 87 ones have yellowish skin while the Mariposa ones have green skin.

It's the same model, just a different paintjob.
(A model and a texture are not the same thing.)

Ther are Iron Sights.
There is a companion wheel as compared to Fallout 3 where you had to enter dialogue with companions to give orders.
There is a reputation system so if you piss Goodsprings off then they're gonna stay pissed off at you as compared to Fallout 3 where everyone mellowed down after 3 days.
There are 4 main quest lines to follow, 1 which is very very open with it's choices and one which splits into two more choices.
There are over hundreds of quests.
There is a DT system as compared to a DR system, now to explain this, You have 10DR, an enemy shoots a weapon that does 20 DAM towards you, it means that 10% gets reducted from his damage, so his damage becomes 18. With DT on the other hand it's a fixed defense number, so 10DT means that 10 DAM is taken off of the damage dealt to you. So DT means direct decrease in damage where as DR means a % based damage reduction. New Vegas uses DT.

There are multiple ammo types for each weapon and tons of weapon mods.
You get a perk every other level as compared to every level.
The level cap without DLC's is 30, with DLC's it's 50.
Big Guns has been split up into Energy Weapons, Guns and Explosives.
Survival is a new skill which determines how effective food and herbal medicine is and also allows you to craft it.
SPECIAL is a bit more important now.
You get to choose Traits at the start of the game, Traits is not like Perks which only give a positive effect, Traits give a positive effect but also a negative effect.

The gameworld is not sandbox like Fallout 3 is, it has a certain design to follow, but once you learn the game it's easier to cheat this design.
Companions now have longer storylines tied to themselves which helps develop their character in not only story but abilities too.
There are less dungeons than in Fallout 3.
Pretty much this and I would add that New Vegas has some really interesting dungeons/places that you can visit like Vault 34, the Repconn Building just to name a few.

I personally like New Vegas for its better RPG mechanics and well written quests. Some factions that appear bad could be good, or appear good and be bad. Every decision you make effects every other decision wether you know it or not.

There are a better variety of weapons and armor too.

Also, you get to choose a perk every 2 levels, which I like. They brought back Damage Threshold too, which makes more sense when it comes to certain weapons vs a certain type of armor.

This game is a bit smaller and there is less to explore. But New Vegas isn't really about exploring, but there are still some large buildings explore. The most annoying thing I've come across is extreme lag and invisible walls. Let's say you want to climb to a specific area and not take the road or you want to take a shortcut and jump over some huge mountainous rocks, the game most likely won't let you and there will be an invisible barrier blocking your way.

Other than those 2 annoying things, the game is fantastic and worth every penny. The UE is only $50 with all the add-ons. Plus, most bugs are fixed. The story is well written and the quests are too, not to mention most have different results depending on the choices you make during that quest. You can also join certain factions. Depending on which one you join or associate yourself with will effect how other factions treat you and if you can join them as well. You can modify your weapons and buy specific types of bullets. New Vegas brings Damage Threshhold or DT back. DT makes puts armor into the equation more. So wearing heavy armor compared to light has a bigger difference.

In my 40 hours with the Ultimate Edition I've had no freezes, only got stuck in the terrain 3 times (Quick load of a save fixed that problem) and I've seen a couple of typical Gamebryo issues (Corpses falling through the ground, enemies getting stuck in the terrain, bodies going widely flying after you kill them, textures not loading properly, etc). The Ultimate edition definitely has fixed the problems that New Vegas had at launch for me.
