What can I expect out of this?

I just got myself a new laptop to replace my 6 year old and dying desktop. Its an ASUS G74SX-DH1 with Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.2Ghz (With 3.1Ghz Turbo which I have turned on all the time), Geforce GTX 560m with 3GB GDDR5, 12GB DDR3, 17.3" 1920x1080@60Hz LED.

My Desktop was a 3Ghz P4, Geforce 6600 GT 256Mb, 2G DDR1, 19" 1280x1024@85Hz and ran Oblivion modded with medium settings at 10-20 FPS with AA and AF disabled. Yes I actually played the game a lot like this but became frustrated after sometime and stopped.

I have since copied over my modded oblivion install over to my laptop and would like to begin working on it to get it up to par with my new laptop. I can not properly assess what kind of performance i will be getting out of this but I assume I would be able to max the settings in game with moderate AA and AF (I see no point in having these maxed since the difference as they get higher is only an FPS hit)

My mod list will stay the same for the most part, Im not using any high demanding mods like FCOM. I plan to add open cities and OBGE and upgrade any mods I have to their high quality versions if available. I have no interest in any texture packs at all so Im guessing that will be a major plus in peformance. So anyone experienced with new computers and how they fair with Oblivion, I would like to know if the game would be able to run at a solid and smooth 60 FPS if possible?

If you can convince your graphics card to stay in charge, you should be fine, but laptops with Intel CPUs and nVIDIA graphics do not always manage to act correctly any more, and owners have to jump through elaborate hoops to get the bad laptops to work the way they are supposed to work (no idea what percentage of the total are causing trouble, sorry).

Welps, my results are 10fps in the wilderness with maxed settings. and this is without obge since oblivion can [censored] my computer just fine without it.

I'm pretty disappointed, I knew Oblivion svcked performance like a blackhole, but not this badly.

Refer again to my warning comment. I'm almost certain that your Intel video is interfering with the nVIDIA graphics. If you had an AMD processor with that same nVIDIA GPU, you'd probably have no trouble with low FPS numbers.

Ohhh I see, so these newfangled CPUs come with video cards inside them? Any idea on how to disable them?

Edit: I found the problem, I had a setting called "ambient occlusion" turned on in nvidia control planel which was the cause of the dramatic fps lose. Turning it off gives me between 20-40 fps in the wilderness and a smooth 60 fps in interiors with maxed settings, damn near creamed my pants when i first looked at the numbers as I have never played oblivion so smoothly. As far as the IGPs in the new Intel CPUs, It seems ASUS correctly disabled it as I found no reference to it in my bios or in my nvidia control panel where it should also show up.

Today is going to be a nice day
