What can I do to speed up load times?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 11:06 am

Specs:
i5 2500k
16 gb 1600
Gtx 970 g1
1050w psu (Yea it's over kill)
Plextor 128gb SDD + 1TB HDD

The HDD is a 7200rpm Samsung something or the other. Steam/Fallout 4 is on the HDD.

I want faster load times, what do you suggest?

Thank you!

Is the game on the SSD or the HDD? Moving it to the SSD (or buying a second one and moving it there) is the only thing you can do that will make a difference. If it's on the HDD you could defrag the drive, but I doubt it will make a huge difference.

Go make a cup of tea and grab a biscuit while you wait, that's what I do.

Their is no room to bring steam and Fallout 4 over to my ssd. It's only 128gb as stated which has my OS on it.

I am looking to find out if buying a bigger ssd would be worth it or not.

Are you running Sata 2 or 3 HDD. 3 is twice as fast as 2 and 4x as fast in Raid 0.

I have an sata 3 and my load times are 5-10 secs max.

Also, running the game in Borderless WIndowed mode reduces load times by half, even on a SSD.

Considering you can buy a 250GB SSD for the price of a game and a couple of energy drinks, yes

www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX100-250GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B00RQA6TEI/

The cloning software that comes with them makes it beyond easy to transfer your OS and programs over

When I see threads like this it makes me wonder how it is possible that my PS4 which is far less spec wise than what your PC specs are can load saves from a cold boot in about 60 seconds? In game save loads are much faster.

I haven't put a stop watch to it, but I don't even have time to reach over to my laptop and hit refresh on my email before my saves are loaded let alone grab some tea and crumpets. :) As a matter of fact, I mentioned in another thread how I had gotten used to doing something else while F3 saves loaded on my PS3.

From the time I hit the 'Ps' (turn system on) button on my controller with my PS4 being completely off (not in standby mode) till my most recent saved game is loaded is about 60 seconds? Maybe?

I'm not trying to get in to a peeing match here, I'm just thinking that you have far more horsepower under the hood than I do and I would think that you could reasonably expect to get PS4 performance at the very least.

Perhaps something is running in the background? Antivirus, Windows update, etc. etc.. I've actually had overclocked ram cause problems like this. When I built my last PC I installed stock speed RAM that was not over clockable. It's actually getting hard to come by these days but it is available. Anyway, getting off track there.

Good luck!

It's because the game on PC is much higher spec than the console versions depending on the settings used. Larger areas, more objects, and things like godrays are being calculated on load than on consoles.

There does seem to be an issue with load times on PC though, as seemingly weird things can increase or decrease them drastically. Like running in fullscreen increases load times versus borderless windowed mode, and Vsync on also increases load times versus Vsync off. It's all very strange.

Uncapping the framerate results in the game's loading time dropping significantly. I went from 30 seconds capped at my monitor's refresh rate to 6. (60 fps -> 400 fps) Though, obviously this isn't a solution since running the game above 60FPS is a bad thing to do. Mayhap someone will eventually make a mod that can toggle vsync/cap when the game's loading..

That aside..

Seems like a no brainer to me..

If you don't have space, delete useless garbage? Shrink the pagefile down to 1/2GB, disable hiberation and remove the hiberfil.sys file, cleanup temp files.. should recover quite a lot of space if your Windows install hasn't been customized at all.

Borderless Windowed helped my and cut my loading times to one third of what they used to be. Not sure if it has any unintended side effects, though. Framerate doesn't seem uncapped since the Steam FPS monitor stays at 60fps, but I've noticed that when underwater the game gets confused now and then for 1-2 frames and plays the going out of water/into water sound effect.

Increasing FPS will also make it load faster.

In the beginning my game was hardcapped at 30 FPS, and my loading screens took for ever.

Once i removed the FPS cap, using this link: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=551069501

And then used a software to cap my FPS at 71 FPS my loading screens are now atleast 3-4 times faster.

PS: You must cap the game at 60-70 FPS or it will not function correctly!

On a side note... using a program such as ParkControl, and set the program to "max performance" will utilize all your CPU cores, which can give a performance boost.
