What can we use from Oblivion?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:56 am

I'm rather new to the modding scene, but I've heard a lot about how easy it is to take something from Oblivion and use it as a mod for Fallout 3. This may have already been discussed to death, but I'd like to know how easy/difficult it is, what the process is like, and if any mods have been created using the process. Am I right to assume the Greenworld mod uses trees and grass from Oblivion? If so, what's stopping us from taking whole models and cities? Anyway, thanks for any information you can give me.

I'm not sure about Greenworld, but I wouldn't think it uses any vanilla Oblivion models. The process isn't that intensive, but it takes some work. However, you're not allowed to use any vanilla resources at all from Oblivion in Fallout. It's against the EULA, and thus quasi illegal for you to do for personal use, and illegal to redistribute them to the community.

Bethesda doesn't allow it, as taking any files from any game and incorporating them into a mod is illegal.

I kinda figured it wouldn't be legal, oh well.

But I'm assuming using player made content from Oblivion would be allowed?

It's not legal. A bummer. There were several mods for Oblivion that were canned, banned, and admonished for using Morrowind resources.

Player made content is fair game as long as you have permissions, and the content doesn't include any Oblivion assets.

Shouldn't it be legal since both the Elder Scrolls series and Fallout 3 are owned by the same company?

No, because some models and textures are only licensed for use in one game.

it's not as simple as that. but what ever their reasons are and how good (or not) they look to us, it was made very clear, more than once, that resources from other Bethesda games are not allowed.

Well that's a shame. I was only wondering because I had noticed some buildings in Oblivion could easliy be slightly edited to look like they had asian influences, which could help in creating a "Fallout 3 in China" type of mod. But oh well, I guess this can be locked, seeing as it's a discussion of illegal activities.

It'd be nice, but that's not the case. Each game uses different licensed content, different legal bindings, etc.

IMO, the best thing to happen to Oblivion was Morroblivion, but it was beaten and stabbed to critical condition (or death, I haven't checked in awhile) because it was a tool that could be used to convert the original files in Morrowind (which had to be present, thus owned by the person) into Oblivion. It was still deemed illegal by the Beth legal staff.

edit - there were some Pagoda models created for Oblivion weren't there? Those might suite your purpose, and looked to bepPlayer made to me (and not edited from Oblivion).

It is very simple - you cannot take assets from one game and use them in another, even if it is one of Bethesda's own games.
