What causes NPCs to lose their heads?

Post » Mon May 17, 2010 8:49 pm

This head-scratcher brought to you by the fact that I've just run into two Khajiit in Ald-Ruhn who had their ears and manes but no faces. I've checked all my mods that alter these NPCs, and none of them individually cause head removal. What's going on, and how do I fix it?

possibly something they're wearing? might be worth it to kill them and see what's in their inventories. Some mods add "masks" to change faces i think.

I looked at their inventories too when I loaded the mods that altered them - nothing new there.

What mods did you download before noticing the problem?

The only time (besides masks, as was already mentioned) that I've seen something like this was when I had set aside a copy of Morrowind for testing my script work. I created a character with Better Heads enabled, used one of those heads for the character, and then removed the better heads mod. The result, upon reloading the save and clicking through all the errors, was that my character literally had no head.

I'm not sure if this could happen with NPCs too -- did you recently uninstall any headpacks?

maybe you loaded a save game made with a head replacer, and just you didn't select that plugin again, when you loaded it.

I've had this happen when adding a head replacer into an existing game. Enchanted Editor should be able to fix it if that is the case. Load the save into EE open NPC's tab right click on that NPC and delete then save.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. :)

I've had something similar happen. The guards in Seyda Neen like to randomly lost their helmets. The odd thing is I don't have to have a mod even touch NPCs/faces/hair/armor for it to happen, and it tends to be just ONE of the generic guards.

If fiddling with EE doesn't fix it, it may be a game engine issue.
