What Country Should FO4 Be In?

Post » Sun Oct 10, 2010 9:50 am

One of the defining features of the Fallout Setting is its 50s era sense American utopianism. While this could be picked up and plopped on to another country it would be a bit odd to be in say, France, and seeing so much Americana.

I think a game could straddle the US/Canadian or US/Mexican border. I also think China would work well since communism played such a large role in 50s Americana. A game set in China would probably require that the US had established a large enough beachhead there before the war that remnants had survived. Other communist regions like Russia and Eastern Europe might work but I think it would be stretching things without an actual American presence.

America isn't a country, the closest is the United States of America

"America" is the colloquial name for the country, and you knew exactly what people were talking about so why make a fuss about technicalities? It's the same as saying that Britain isn't a country since it's actually the United Kingdom, or rather it's actually the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Unless you can maintain your high standards yourself by always using the technically correct national terms I suggest you not criticize others. ;)

However this is off topic, if you really must discuss this issue then start a thread in Community Discussion, don't continue it here. I will note that if you do make a thread ensure it lacks any hint of being confrontational or critical or it will likely devolve in to a mess of nation-bashing and get locked.

A Fallout set in a post-apocalyptic Japan would be good, although politically sensitive maybe

How about China? Since they were part of the Great War that destroyed the world? I think that'd be cool.

China was completely destroyed by the nukes, as onece I was talking to moira and she said "maybe well be able to find out if china ever existed"

How would she know? Moira, like all wastelanders have only a vague grasp of history and the histories all speak of this place called China, but offer no proof of its existence. Nothing they can see for themselves.

Note that she says 'Ever existed' as in 'was it a real place or a fable'

If she was talking about it's destruction she'd have said 'Maybe we'll be able to find out if China still exists'

She's also a bit loopy so you can't take everything she says as fact.

Well, the war was US vs China, and we've pretty well fleshed out the US side of things... How about giving us a look from the Chinese perspective?

Southeastern USA, specifically Louisiana or Florida. I would love to have swamps filled with mutant alligators and carnivorous plants! :D

I agree that the game only makes sense if set in the USA. Part of the point of the game is the contrast between 1950ies optimism and the horrific reality. This summed up in FO 3 where the character not only kills the president, but also takes on and defeats the fascistic descendants of the US government.

*Chinese HQ*
Commander: General Ling, what shall be the target for the next nuke launch?
General Ling: Commander Jiles, set the coordinates to central africa.
Commander: But General, general. Why do you want to nuke africa, they are no threat to us.
General Ling: Because my foolish apprentice, they are a LEDC (Lesser Economic Developed Country) and we must destroy them!

Exactly, there would'nt really be a mass wreck in africa since few nukes have been dropped there.

England would be legitimate. It is one of the closest countries America has to a twin in terms of culture, politics and subcultures (Canada and such may beat it, but I've never been Canada.) In the 50s, many things like clothing, weaponry and comics would be similar to America.

So instead of ruined Corvegas on the streets we get burned out, nuclear powered http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Minor, instead of skyscraqers we get suburban terraced houses and semidetacheds and instead of the BoS we get the Grenadier Guards with armoured bearskins. :D

In principle I have no objection, but for me a "post-apocalyptic role playing game" set in the ruins of the UK just wouldn't be Fallout. It might be a fine game, but not Fallout...

There are skyscraqers in London. :P Where there skyscraqers in Fallout 3?

And the BoS is getting boring anyway....

I do think London would work good as a spinoff though.

The United States of America, and no where else. If it was not in the US, it would not be Fallout.

I would like a fallout set in britain, (not london). I would hope it would only be a spin off a large part of fallout lore is the back story and the completly delusional isolaisionist society that america becomes. Also bethseda would probably put super mutants or the BoS in the other countries in a move that makes no sense

It's just like Mad Max. If it's anywhere other than Australia, it's not Mad Max. Same goes for Fallout.

According to Fallout lore everywhere got pummeled. Sure, Africa was unlikely to have targets as high priority as say, Washington DC and Beijing but it still got devastated.

I'd love to see a Fallout game set in Canada, to be honest.

But I'd rather not move beyond the North American Continent simply because the 1950s World of the Future is such a integral part of the Fallout setting. But a Canadian Wasteland, one that had been forcefully annexed by the United States (And seems to have had some Vault-Tec Vaults constructed to boot)...that'd be an interesting new perspective to the world mythos without all out abandoning what makes Fallout familiar.

Leukaemia (UK spelling) is bone marrow cancer and not a contagious disease. Though as others have stated, malaria might be what your thinking of.

I'd almost like to see a Vault-tec International set in France or Brittan or some European country. instead of the Enclave it could be Vault-tec trying to take over.

I can see it now. Vault 203, Set just outside of Paris. it was a controll vault set to stay sealed for 10 years. however, fear from the populace made the vault last until the bitter end. people start starving and then they open the vault and found New Paris. Then Vault-tec shows up and enslaves everyone or something... I'll work on it later.

For a direct sequel to Fallout? US of A, no doubt about it.

However, should they do a spin off such as New Vegas, I don't mind where it takes place. US preferred, but anywhere should prove interesting. (anywhere on Earth)

Couldn't resist replying to this post.

Although I would like a fallout taking place in europe, i beg what ever higher entity has power over it (probably the devs) that they would keep vault-tec out of it. Vault (tec) is a purely an american based thing and it would screw the canon, and series up if they ever let that happen. This is because Vault tec started building the vaults when Europe was fighting the resource wars. They did not have the funds to build things like that. However, regular VIP Fallout shelters, those used to shelter the governments of nations and important people, are all over Europe and have been build since the fifties and/or sixties. Considering the Diversion it is very likely that these would have been build and it would be interesting to find out.

It is more likely to see stuff like the Red riders, Nuka Cola and hubris comics buildings/reference. perhaps even RobCo, but in my opinion definitely no Vault tec and Vaults. It would not make sense, and would make it seem like a cheap rip off from the series. It's basicly copy pasting the entire US to Europe. If they do Europe the should think of new stuff that add to canon, not overuse the old canon (they nearly crossed that line in FO3 but they can get away with it)

Europe was still fighting the resource wars when the bombs fell, it would be awesome to see that war, basically frozen in time, and survive that wreckage.

just my 2c.

(If you'd say Fallout shelter instead of Vault, " A new strong faction" instead of Vaul-tec and work it out some more, it might become something great.

The biggest role I can see a Vault-Tec serving in a game set inEurope is a retired employee. Still unlikely.
