Considering that Murder was only 1000 septim fine in Oblivion our character must have done something really bad to warrant out execution at the start of Skyrim.

So what did you do to deserve your fate?

Esbern is a raving madman, gifted with "visions" of the coming apocalypse. I hope the player can refuse the Call and the world Esbern invites you to.

Can someone tell me how they know we're up for execution. I know prisoner from GI podcast but they said nothing about execution.

My character was arrested for being caught whilst sneaking around an assassination targets castle and the murder of a guard.

It is a time of war, so death sentence would be much more accepted if you were seen as a threat by your captors.
