Yo, I'm putting up with the same frustrating issues with which everyone else has to cope. My game has killscreened at least ten times. I've had to sacrifice a few hours of gameplay more than once because of a buggy quest. Hell, last night I had to spend an hour reading forums trying to find a way to get back into the Lucky 38 once Victor decided to ignore me.
It is without question that these sorts of issues are inexcusable. The fact that the game is large in no way grants Bethesda or Obsidian a "get out of jail free" card. War and Peace is large but it doesn't have a typo every third line because (even if Tolstoy couldn't spell) its publishers hired copy editors to proof the manuscript. Similarly, debugging a video game is not an option. Quality Assurance teams are supposed to do everything in their power to break a game so that programmers can do everything in their power to code an unbreakable game. A normal player playing the game normally should never find himself swimming underneath the terrain or suddenly taking a bullet from a friendly faction. And yet, alas, the game is "so large" that bugs are "inevitable?" I'm sorry if I don't have any sympathy for Bethesda or Obsidian on that point. Then again, they have my money already.
And they have yours too, which brings me to my second point. While you guys are carping at Bethesda and Obsidian because the game is glitchy, these companies have employed people to address the problems and get them fixed. They are trying to remedy the issues, and I'm sure they ultimately will. And they are doing this, in our cases, for free. They already have our money, and they've already suffered losses from people who will refuse to ever buy the game because of its problems. But they not only want to generate future sales, and keep their credibility. They also want us to enjoy what we're doing out there in the Mojave wastes.
That leads me to the final point I want to make. We are having fun or we wouldn't be complaining about when the game is not fun. It's been suggested that this game is a simple cash cow, but we can rule that out. Three reasons jump to mind: 1. We like the game enough to want it to be perfect, and we're willing to write about it in forums because it's not. Clearly New Vegas is immersive enough to frustrate us when that immersion is interrupted by a game crash. 2. The dialog, background, factions, and story arc are compelling and immense. If you're looking to turn quick money, you don't take the time to create anything nearly so complex as the NCR/Legion/Strip tensions. 3. You don't fix cash cows if they're broken. You fix products you care about if they're broken.
In short:
1. Yeah, the game has hundreds of glitches and potentially fatal bugs, but
2. calling Bethesda names and saying the game is unplayable are both foolish, because
3. you spent the time to write a complaint post at Bethesda's website seeking a fix, which means
4. ultimately, you want the game to work, and believe Bethesda will do something about its problems.
