Approaching the soldiers I was met by shouts and screams, all of them gesturing to some point behind me.
"...GATE...CLANNFEAR...BEHIND YOU....RUN!!"
As I turned to look over my shoulder I immediately felt a heat on my face, which I oddly enough hadn't felt a second ago. My heart skipped at least one beat, and I felt my jaw drop as I turned completely to face the http://i54.tinypic.com/2n0mys8.jpg. Just as I turned, the gate flared and a burst of heat knocked me to the ground. Resting on my elbow and shielding my eyes with the other arm, I saw, through blurry vision, a two-legged creature with scaly skin and an oddly shielded head run towards me with its spear-like horns lowered for impalement. The familiar twang of long bows being released was a welcome sound and I heard the creature scream as it fell to the ground and slid to a stop right in front of me.
I stared at the creature in front of me, and suddenly I was hauled off of the ground by strong armored arms and carried to safety behind the blockade by a Kvatch soldier.
"Are you alright, miss?"
"I...I think so?"
"Who are" What are you doing here? This is a quarantined zone, no civilians! You understand?"
"Ye-yes...What is going on here?"
"I'm Savlian Matius, Captain of the Kvatch guard. That thing over there...that's an Oblivion Gate. Already lost a few good men in it today, let's not add a pretty Breton to the list, shall we?"
While I regained my composure I heard the sounds of battle by the gate. The guards were battling the few remaining monster the gate had spewed out in its flare of fire. Getting to my feet I took in the whole scene piece by piece. The gigantic gate was blocking the entrance to Kvatch, and seemed to have separated the guards from the city. Its enormous frame was completely covered with a mirror-like film, only it was a mirror of flames and death. It struck me deep in heart, and I felt it in my bones. Just looking at the thing made me want to creep into a hole and curl up until it went away.
"Miss, what's your name? We have to get you to safety in the base camp, but I can't spare a single man to take you there right now."
"Camarilla. My name is Camarilla. It's ok, I'll stay here with you. Maybe I can help."
"HAH! That's very funny Miss Camarilla, help! Listen, we don't need any excess baggage here, if you catch my drift, so....hold on...is that a Templar Longsword? And is that heavy armor in your bag? Who are you?!"
"I told you, I'm Camarilla. And I'll help. Just give me a second to get my armor on."
"Oh...well..ok, we might be able to use you here after all then. WOW, WAIT! You can't just drop your clothes in front of my men!! Kvatch Guards! Avert your eyes!"
Armed and armored up I felt a bit more confident, and after Savlian explained the situation to me, it was clear that the only way to stop this thing was to get that gate closed somehow. With things coming out of it, and men having entered it, there had to be something on the other side. And I had just witnessed that whatever comes out of there can be killed.
"I'll go."
"You'll what?"
"I'll go in there. Find your men. Close the gate."
"That's suicide, girl!"
"It's a good day to die." (I had always wanted to say that)
I felt a surge of rage, and as I took the first stumbling steps towards the gate, my legs slowly grew steady underneath me. I accellerated to a jog and finally to a full sprint, straight towards to fiery pits of Oblivion. I heard the shouts of the men slowly being drowned out by the pounding of my heart, and my vision narrowed to a tunnel. Something had to die!
I jumped as high as I could, diving head first into the gate, curled up mid-air, rolling to a crouched stance with my shield high, and my blade ready to take a bite out of anything that got in my way. The landscape was unmistakingly the home of death and doom, a much worse version of the scorched lands around Kvatch. Even the sky was scorched, alight with unnatural fires and molten lava flowed in fiery lakes. The stench was almost unbearable. Then I heard a shout from my left. One of the Kvatch guards, alive and fighting! I sprinted to his help and we quickly disposed of some scamps.
"Thank the Nine, help has arrived!"
"Where are the others?"
"I'm the last of us. One was taken to their main tower, over there?"
He pointed toward a massive structure, dominated by the greatest tower I had ever seen.
"We learned that these gates are somehow driven by a stone of some sort. Sitting in the top of the great tower. We need to get that information back to my Captain!"
"You go tell him, and stay there. I...I'll stay...here. And find your partner."
"Yes...yes, I'll go back. This place is insane. Good luck, stranger."
The infrastructure of this place was simple. A desolate landscape dominate by the great towers. That's where I had to go. Carefully making my way towards the towers, I ran into only a few of the monsters, which turned out to be brute animals, fighting without much intelligence. Much like I once did.
The Daedras I encountered in the tower, however, was a different story. I had heard tales about the Daedra, which my uncle had told to scare us kids when I was little. Here were Magic users and armored fighters both, alive and very very real.
It took all my skill and knowledge to battle my way to the top of the first tower, but I quickly learned their ways. They were aggressive and overly confident. To the disgusted growling taunts of 'Petty human' and 'Foul critter' I easily lured them into following me, and in their own back yard, I could pick my own battle grounds. They couldn't stand up to a good piece of steel, and I fought my way to the top of the tower where I found the other guard, just as promised. He told me where to find the energy stone holding the gate open, and I sent him back through the gate, to safety.
The second tower was surprisingly poorly defended. Scattered Daedra and some scamps, no organized force or defense. Their over confidence went this far, and it would be their downfall. I took the head clean off of the last one of them, and covered in blood I surprisingly found myself out of stairs to climb. There, right in front of me...a magic stone, twirling in the magic fires, which were shooting out of the top of the tower, burning the sky. I sheeted my sword and slid my shield onto my back and backed all the way up against the wall. Then I ran. Accellerated to a full sprint and jumped, grabbed the stone mid-air, and flipped forward to land on my feet. A huge explosion broke my concentration as I tore the stone from its resting place, and I lost balance. The ground I hit was not the floor I had leaped from seconds earlier. As the deafening roar died, I rolled onto my back and stared up at the giant gate outside of the Kvatch walls as it crumbled and vanished into thin air.
The dead silence was broken by the welcoming cheer of human voices.
" THE GATE IS GONE!! THE HERO OF KVATCH IS BACK!! SHE DID IT!! "
