After having done Queen Aubk-i's bidding (twice now), returning from Shedungent and then Castle Necromoghan, my custom Thief Kathris decided it was time to take some time off. With reports of increased hostility on the streets of Daggerfall at night, she decided it was becoming considerably more difficult to rob from stores. Pulled over in
The Mole and Mug (her favorite local tavern) one night, she was bought a drink by her accomplice in the Thieves Guild as celebration, for she had been advanced to the rank of Robber. :foodndrink:
As the local populace of Daggerfall was just as boring as ever (albeit with the exception of many of the males, who have apparently fallen under the Mad God's sway and have begun http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1010128), Kathris decided to ask the Spymaster what was going on. Even the court nobles were quiet, including King Gothryd who seemed to take a particular liking to the Wood Elf and her ability to deliver his various items to the lesser-ranking nobles without any complications. The Spymaster made mention of a local shopkeeper who had come into a sum of false gold and passed it off to his clients, unaware of his blunder.
Needing something to do during her stay in the kingdom (whilst waiting for the marriage of Princess Morgiah and Karoodil, a ceremony she had been invited to at the insistence of Barenziah and had been eagerly anticipating) before heading south, Kathris decided to take pity on the shopkeeper and aid him, albeit less out of pity and more for the generous 700 gold he had offered for each of the four false golden bars.
The first bar was located in the Palace of Ipshead. Waiting until the town's denizens were asleep, she scaled the walls of the palace and entered from one of the towers. She quickly located the gold bar on a table and pocketed it without hesitation, only to hear something stir behind her. It was a gargoyle - one of the ancient creatures enchanted to protect this place. It brought its mace towards her, but she ducked out of its swing and brought her dagger downward, slashing across its briast. The creature let out a soft growl as she proceeded to drive her blade through its heart. Hearing the noble and his family below awakening from the sounds of the fight, she quickly fled the palace. :ahhh:
The second bar was located in a local bank, the third in a house. Neither took a particularly great deal of effort to secure. The fourth was in Castle Necromoghan. Having recently returned from there to locate a package of letters for the queen, Kathris decided it was not worth the trouble - the damp, musty smell of the castle's dark winding passageways still all over her clothes.
En route to the tavern to reap her reward, a man who was supposedly one of the clients to receive the false gold had mentioned he caught word of the treachery. Demanding his proper pay, he implored Kathris to do him a favor - in exchange he would promise not to tell the nobles of Ipshead that she was the one who infiltrated their stronghold. Seeking vengeance against one of his business rivals, he asked Kathris to break into the man's shop and steal a priceless war axe. Kathris entered the store by day in order to survey the building's layout. However, the shopkeeper was busy taking inventory in the back room and she figured now would be just as good a time as ever to steal the item.
Kathris found the war axe alone on an empty shelf in the back of the shop, and quickly stuffed it into her satchel. A young Battlemage (most likely an apprentice of the storekeeper) materialized in front of her, likely the end of an invisibility spell. He fired a magical bolt at Kathris, which sent her crashing into the shelves of items behind her. Noticing the shopkeeper still preoccupied with his task and most likely partially deaf given the man's age, she decided to retaliate. She disarmed the Battlemage with a kick from her heel and then brought her dagger across the assailant's face. Quiet and ever resolute, the Battlemage closed in on Kathris, drawing a small tanto from his pocket. He lunged forward at Kathris, but she managed to block it and retaliate, bringing her blade behind him and driving it through his back. It was probably a good time to leave.
Even when not raiding dungeons, Kathris was starting to tire of the constant brushes with death. However, she returned to Daggerfall to be greeted by the first snowfall of the season. It had been a year since she first arrived, and the villagers were celebrating the New Life festival. Perhaps she could stay a little longer, at least until the blizzards begin.
