What did you do in Daggerfall today?
http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=840466

This thread was originally created by ChildInside a year ago. This is a continuation of the first thread, which has reached its post limit.
Come on in, adventurer and share your tall tales of what happened to you in the kingdom of Daggerfall today!

Marelik, Acrobat by day. Thief by night :

After having being contacted by the Thieves Guild for the crimes I committed in the deserts of Dak'Fron, I quickly rose up in ranks. Marelik is an highly talented professional, afterall!

My new hometown, Bagheradax, a small village of around 5000 souls, was also home to my Thieves Guild hall. I took every quest from my guildmaster there. These quests involved helping a fellow thief in trouble with the law or smuggling items.

One day, I decided to go see my good old friend the guildmaster and asked him if I could help him with personal matters, so I could take a break from guild jobs.
His face had a sad look.

"What's the matter?"

"My cousin, Marelik! They've taken her! She's all I have."

"Who? Did this?"

"The Dark Brotherhood. They took my 8th year old cousin and trapped her in a remote crypt. Their letter say that they will execute her in 34 days if I don't pay them a ransom. But I don't have that money!"

"I'll help you, guildmaster. You have always been kind to me."

Thus, I saved his cousin from the crypt, which was guarded by assassins and wild animals. After I returned the child, he told me :

"This cannot be, Marelik! This cannot be! They have captured my own child now! She's also in held in a remote dungeon!"

"The Dark Brotherhood will pay for this. I will save her for you."

After I returned from the dungeon with the child, he was thankful. He gave me gold pieces and talked about me around town. I was now the village's child saver!
I decided to take a week off, drinking at the tavern, climbing roofs and wandering around neighbouring cities to pick some pockets.

When I returned to my Guild Master, he pointed me with his finger and yelled :

"You! You are Marelik aren't you!?"

"Why, yes guild master! Don't you recognize me?"

"Thief! Burglar! Look everyone! He's the one! He's the one who stole my diamond! Guards!! Guards!! Get him!!"

My own Guild Master! My friend! The one I had worked for both professionally and on personal matters! I quickly evaded the guards and ran out of town. I found refuge in a crossroad tavern. People were talking about the child saver who was now a blasted thief who stole from a king (A king!?).

i quickly left the tavern and slept in the wilderness until, one day, a child came to me, letter in hand. He indicated me he was mute and handed me the letter. I paid him a gold piece and read it :

"Marelik,

Look, our spies know you are not the thief. And our spies also know how to get that reputation of yours back, if you help us that is. The man who accused you has been dealt with...severly. The diamond is somewhere in a remote laboratory, most likely guarded by a mage. Get the diamond, bring it to our agent and we'll bribe the officials of Dak'Fron so they can stop looking for you.

Consider us a friend.

The Thieves Guild"

I found the diamond, gave it to the agent and, thus, my name was cleared. I was now a normal citizen like before. But I will need to be more careful about who I help, for even your best friend can become your worst ennemy.

Well this didn't happen today but it possibly the most satisfying moment in all my hours of playing. Once my assassin started climbing the double-digits in levels (Thief classes, am I right?), Direnni Tower became a REALLY, REALLY dangerous affair, what with every hostile encounter in the dungeon being replaced with Ancient Vampire Ancient Vampire Ancient Vampire. Being fed up with kiting them with a bow, Earnhardt had the awesomest idea: soul trap. He had just enough spell points to use it, a freshly purchased empty soul gem, and a resist shock potion. All too easy.

After capturing the menace he hit up his contacts in the Mage's Guild to bind the Ancient Vampire's soul to his daedric buckler, giving it the following effects:

RESIST SHOCK WHEN HELD
STRENGTHENS ARMOR
SOUL BOUND ANCIENT VAMPIRE

Best decision he ever made.

My Nord female was trying to find her way out of Privateer's Hold today. To my surprise, I actually managed to kill rats and bats easily, although I got killed by some human because I have no idea where to go. <_<

Welcome to the Illiac Bay, my friend. Hopefully you will come to appreciate the challenge offered; it's an experience you rarely get these days. Yeah, Privateers' Hold is a nasty way to start, but it is survivable. One thing to realize is you don't have to kill *everything*. It's okay to run away. In fact, sometimes, you will want very, very badly to run away, depending on what kind of character you're playing, and what kind of monster you encounter. Sometimes, the game randomly generates a totally level-inappropriate encounter.

IT'S FRIGGIN AWESOME!!! :D :D :D

Well, I dropped in my adopted hometown of Mesajer in the Dragontail Mountains and found my way to the Temple of the Order of Arkay. I meant to speak to my patron there, a man named Grirpte. And he had some bad news.

Apparently, Arkay was pissed.

He didn't go into too much detail, but the Order did something bad and they needed to atone. And that atonement required some untainted ectoplasm. And the nearest place Grirpte knew to get some was a Castle T'eze, in the south of the mountains. So I rode off into the sunset for some time and made my way there. Currently, I'm still stuck in its mazes, toying with levers to see if they'll open up some passages for me. No sign of the ectoplasm yet, though some giants have been wanting to party (and they seem to be violent partiers). The wereboars are just plain hungry, as are the scorpions.

Perhaps the whole thing would have been easier if we could have just sent Arkay some flowers, maybe accompanied with a nice "I'm sorry" card?

I downloaded it. Tried to play it but I can't handle the graphics and sound lol. They are so poor. Also not being able to look at down and attack the rats at my feet in the intro dungeon killed me. I think it's good I started playing Beth games with Morrowind because I don't think I like Daggerfall.

I'm trying it out, I made a Nord Barbarian. I like the character customizer and picking questions. The game is slow though and I can't find the door out, and I went to every room in the dungeon. I killed everything in the dungeon, a few rats, a bat, two imps, and a bunch of archers that didn't have bows? How is this dungeon hard like people say? I found armor but couldn't wear it? That was kind of lame. I'm not that impressed.

And already, we got our first "graphic and sound so bad lol!". I bet this won't be the last.

The exit of the dungeon should look like this image: http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/walkthru/images/priv05.jpg

The Armor that ya can't wear, I bet ya pick a regular class or ya pick a disadvantage of using armor. That is why ya cannot use the armor.

As for what I did today, I continue roleplaying as a grave robber! :D

today in daggerfall I began playing and trying to get out of the first duengeon. so far I have killed 2 rouges, 4 rats, 4 bats, 1 bear, and 2 archers and I have died 4 times but I'm going to bed tonight so I'll begin again tomorrow. he's a level 2 nord named edward brandt I made a mistake by picking archery as a major skill and he has no bow nor arrows so he's fighting with a long blade which is a minor skill.

ThatOneGuy: I like your writing style. Keep it up. :)

As for me:

I went and made me a mage, like I was saying in the "Playing as a mage" thread. Breton. I cleaned out Privateers Hold with great ease, relying mostly on the ebony dagger the Emperor gave me as a reward for service, supplementing it with the occasional shock spell. My main goal in doing this was to get together the cash to get the spells I would need. Upon emerging from Privateers Hold, I headed to the nearest town: Gothway Garden.

My first stop was the General Store (I don't recall the name of the place, but it's the small one in the southern cluster of three, the one with the rusty relics and stuff), where I sold off the weapons I'd claimed and bought a wagon. Unfortunately, Gothway Garden lacks any other kind of shop, so I'll just hold on to everything else until I move on from Gothway Garden.

My next stop was the Mages' Guild, where I joined up and headed straight to the spellmaker. I needed practice spells: a minimal open spell, called Lock Jam Cantrip; a minimal water breathing spell, called Air Bubble Cantrip; a minimal water walking spell, called Floater Cantrip; a minimal, area around caster, damage health spell, called Push (the only spell I use regularly under combat conditions); a minimal light spell, called Candle Cantrip; and a minimal restore health spell, called Soothing Cantrip. I also went to the regular spell seller and picked up Levitation and Recall.

(For comparison of notes: the spellmaker in Gothway Garden is Belladybyth Moorhart. The spell seller is Gondistair Hearthton. The identifier is Elyzyrrya Masterston. The quest giver is Bedoryan Wicking. I've long wondered whether or not the names are generated at the start of the game, and thus are unique to each game; or if they're constant. Do yours have the same names?)

Finally, I went over to Bedoryan Wicking, the quest giver. (Discarded reel: I took the "Baltham Grayman" quest, but couldn't find him in the town I was told to go to. I thought maybe the quest was bugged, so I reloaded my "Get Quest" save and got:) It seems Magister Wicking needed some elixer vitae or something, and it absolutely had to come from the Cabal of Elorya, located east by southeast from Tuntower. So after I set a recall point and expended my powers on my air bubble cantrip, I headed out. I had very little money, so I had to forgo staying in inns on the way there.

This is probably one of the more interesting labyrinths I've had to navigate. Probably the most striking feature is the fact that its central feature, a giagantic room filled with what look like pillars with spiral staircases on the inside, seems downright OSHA compliant. Other than the narrow catwalks leading from tower to tower, all of the high elevation areas actually had railings. Most of them were wooden, but there was even one area that had well tended shrubbery as a railing! And the stone staircases leading to what are usually holes in the walls in this feature in other dungeons of this type were still intact! Clearly, the mages of the cabal (and there were many, all hostile, all very much wanting to kill me) are keeping this place up!

Also interesting was how incredibly obvious the spot where they keep the special elixer was. There was a place where there was an elevator that lead up the floor above, with two switches in the wall at the top. One of them sent the elevator back down. The other provided a slowfall spell for the non-spellcasters that might need to get down into the pit, which was just past the elevator. On a whim, I decided to use that slowfall effect rather than my usual technique of slavishly following the left wall. This whim bore fruit: at the bottom of the shaft was a room with three mages... and the elixer! I grabbed it and recalled back.

Magister Wicking's a grumpy guy, apparently. He complained that the sample was old, and grumbled about the declining quality of the membership. Heh, that's gratitude for ya. At least he paid me.

I also found two magic items: an open tunic of fortitude, and a badly named "Ruby of Venom Spitting", which actually allows levitation. So now I can fly pretty much anywhere I want to go. :) Not that I couldn't before.

That's probably all I'll do for now. It's late, both in and out of the game. In-game, I mean to find an inn and spend a little time practicing spells, then to bed, and save.

Started up the game created a Dark Elf with a custom Battlemage class and began my trek through the Privateer's Hold. Wasn't as hard as I heard, I have to say. I only died 12 or so times. Had some problems with the rats. Kept tripping over them and not noticing them since they were blocked out by the interface. Opened up a door midway through my dungeon journey and saw an imp. Then I saw a bright flash. And then I quit being alive. Reloaded went around from the other side of the room and exacted my vengeance. Killed an archer with a sword instead of a bow and a couple of skeletons and dungeon bears. Got acquainted with the void for the first time. Made my way to the exit.

Next I fast traveled to the city of Daggerfall. And I'm not ashamed to admit I could've pissed myself when
Spoiler
I heard "VENGEANCE...!"
. Arrived at night so I guess I'll be climbing into Daggerfall and hightailing it to an inn since I can't imagine the streets being safe at night.

I think I'll be pulling some all-nighters playing Daggerfall.

For folks that are having this problem, you might want to try the "view based" interface. That lets you look and turn with the mouse, making it easy to look down at the rats.

Today in Daggerfall, Stands-on-Land, my Argonian Battlemage got his scaly butt handed to him by rats and bats. But he keeps going back for more. The guy's a glutton for punishment. :D

Maybe I should make a new Argonian named Jumps-off-very-tall-Hist-trees-and-turns-himself-into-a-reddish-paste?

So far, you're my favorite new Daggerfall recruit. Indeed, many pairs of pants have been soiled over the cumulative years of hearing "VENGEAAAANCE!", but running through the streets of Daggerfall to an inn is an amazing feeling. I'm glad you're enjoying the game.

By the way, you should hit ESC whilst ingame, click "Controls", click the "Mouse" tab, and then change the view mode to whatever the other one is. It's more like a traditional FPS that way.

Open the Main Menu while in-game, and click on "View Based Interface". This allows you to adopt the standard FPS mouse control. Where you move the mouse is where you look.
Daggerfall is game that needs to be given more time to enjoy if you have started with Morrowind and Oblivion. :)
I also recommend you to change every controls to those that fit either Morrowind or Oblivion. It makes the transition much easier.

Upon emerging from Privateers Hold, I headed to the nearest town: Gothway Garden.

My all-time favourite village. Small, has basic services but also has a Mages Guild. A few taverns to offer work for mercenaries. Most excellent!

I'll need to check it out. But I'm sure the names are randomly generated on each game.

Those are all very interesting stories. :D
I never knew that Beth would release Daggerfall for free when I created this thread yesterday. Seems like the timing was excellent!

Just checked, all the same names.

I myself have been roaming the wilderness outside my home city of Westhead Moor, Daggerfall in order to collect some loot. I've set up quite a reputation for myself in Daggerfall, as a paladin of the Knights of the Dragon and a high ranking member of both the fighters and mages guild, I've decided to amass some gold and head out to another land soon and see what new adventures I could find.

Yes, http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1001159&st=0&p=14486193&#entry14486193. Only exceptions are those people generated for quests.

I completed a few jobs for the Thieves' Guild, I'm just getting stable financially, but I think I'm pretty much set for now. I just put 9000 gold in the bank and have 400 gold from a couple of jobs, and I have some equipment to sell in my wagon. Now, I'm trying to find a small town with a thieves' guild to have a base of operations. Daggerfall is just too big to walk through to get to the guild every time!

Anyway, My character is a pure thief who cannot use magic, but I can hold my own in a fight. One on one, mainly. I'm considering joining the assassin's guild once my combat prowess improves. So far this character has been pretty fun, but I still svck at picking locks currently :(

A continuation of my hunt for untainted ectoplasm in the halls of Castle T'eze:

After barely finding my way out of an accidental pitfall into the large basemant of the castle, I began to explore in earnest. Several of the passages I sought entry to were blocked by artificial means, wooden bars and stone gates. As I began dividing the structure up in my mind, sectioning off areas and noting what general routes led where, I began to feel a tinge of hopelessness creep into my allotted task. Grirpte had given me 28 days to return, and I had set out barely ten days into Mid Year. Though time was vaguely impossible to keep track of below the ground, I was fairly certain I had spent two solid weeks in the castle, hunting for some damned dead-ghost-powder. Surely it would have been more fitting to send whomever among us had annoyed Arkay on this punishment of a goose-chase? In all honesty, what had I done to deserve such treatment and misfortune? Okay, I had killed a few people in frustration while trying to discover the truth about Prince Lhotun's eldest brother. But it's not like I was fraternizing with necromancers, or something of that caliber.

I ended up returning to my biggest annoyance within the castle: a pathway that lead to a long pitfall, the path beyond blocked by a wall of stone. I strongly suspected, due to the coloration style of brick, that the wall could be removed. I knew where the pit led, and it was a dead lead. Every gear or lever in the place had no effect on that blasted wall. But then my pitfall experience earlier came back to me, and forced me to think in a different mindset. I hadn't been thinking spatially enough; I hadn't been searching properly in all three dimensions. Looking up, I saw that the shaft continued upwards a ways, further than I could see. It was the break I had been looking for. Taking an elevator down to reach the bottom of the shaft, I began to climb. Very slowly. Such things were not my strong-suit, but I kept going. I passed the pathway blocked with the suspicious wall and kept climbing. I became fully aware that I had climbed far enough to where a slip would be fatal. And at the top of that shaft, I found an open wooden hatch. One of my lever-pulling moments earlier had pried it open. I shuddered to think what a debacle I would have been in if it had been closed.

Pulling myself up into the room, I met with two not-so-happy giants. I attempted to mimic their voices and gesture at them, but they were more interested in playing "club the shorter newcomer to death." I was not amused and decided to play "test the sharpness of Mithril" instead. The room held beds and a small side-closet with a gear that closed and opened the hatch. I couldn't help but wonder who on earth would want to place beds in a room only reachable by climbing (and I didn't consider at the time how on earth those beds got up there in the first place, given those conditions). And yet, running my hands along the walls, I found a small concealed closet. There, laying ever-so-unceremoniously on a table, was the ectoplasm. As to whether it was untainted or no, I certainly had no knowledge. One pile of ghost-goo looked the same as another, as far as I was concerned.

Relief flooded me for a second, until I realized how utterly in trouble I was. The only way out was down a fatally-long shaft. Throwing the ectoplasm in a sack, I attempted to gingerly ease back into the shaft and get my footing, but I slipped and hurtled down it. Fortunately, I managed to snag the ledge of the pathway halfway through the fall, hurting myself but saving my life at the same time. Perhaps Arkay showed me mercy. Though he could have shown me better mercy by not getting his feelings hurt so badly and then requiring some newcomer to go hunt for an obscure item to make him feel better. These divines and their egos...

I managed to trace my way back to the castle entrance and began the five-day ride back to Mesajer. Grirpte was glad to see me (rather, he was glad to see the ectoplasm), and I took 500 gold pieces as my "thank-you."

Sadly, it felt a bit inadequate. But then, the true value is in the experience itself.

I picked a barbarian as I just wanted to jump into the game. What a goofy concept that you can't equip certian items, glad they got rid of that nonsense. That exit thingy I passed many times but thought it was just a texture on the wall, why didn't they just use a regular door? I made it to Gothway Gardens after wandering in the wilderness which wasn't interesting to my disappointment, walked around talking to npcs, and found out most of them have nothing to say about the town or anything aside from a wheel fell off. I joined the Fighter's Guild and did a few quests, killing rats in town, and killed a bear that was a werewolf or something in a big dungeon that looked a lot like the Privateer Hold with the same throne. I'm starting a new character since the barbarian can't wear good armor.

as edward contiued through PH he stumbled across several weapons and some armor that he took off of his fallen foes. he entered the throne room looking up and around marveling at the arcutecture of this place. then out of nowhere he heard a deafing scream and then he saw where it came from a skeleton came from around the corner and struck edward in the back. edward turned around to face the skeleton and started to fight it then as he realized he was fighting a loseing battle he quickly ran down the stairs of the throne room looking for some other way to bypass the skelton. and there he found it on the left hand side of the stairs a doorway he opened the door and preceded inside to find a rat afther killing it he worked his way up throught stairs until he entered the throne room again except this time on the balcony above. once up there he heard the deaf defying scream again and he looked down to see the skelton on the floor below him. edward said to himself out smartied you didn't I bone sack. and he preceded to climb level afther level hopeing to find a way out at the top killing bats and rats along the way. at the top he found a theif which he made short work up. then out of nowhere a secret door opened and the screams began again from both edward and the skeleton. edward thought to himself oh **** and began to run down the hallway he had just came from and entered the first room he saw only to have another skelton on him. running out the room and down the stairs all edward could say to himself was oh **** oh **** and entered the next room to find an imp. edward finally got sick of it so he took out his sword and began to fight only to find it was no use his weapons where only iron. so backed into a corner with nowhere to go and two skeletons and an imp on him he was thinking I'm going to die. thats when he saw it the exit in the same room he was in. he took off with a mad dash with only a sliver of health left and made it outside.

afther makeing out of PH edward desided he needed to go to daggerfall as quickly as possible so he recklessly ran across the wilderness to daggerfall. he arrived during the day and desided he didn't know what he had to do for the emperor so he desided he should do a little shopping first so afther a little bit of searching he finds a general store goes inside and looks at there wears haveing 440 gold from PH he desides he wants to buy himself a wagon and a cloak just because he wanted to wear one but it was just a casual cloak nothign fancy afther this he desided he would look for an armorer and get a decent weapon and offload the useless ones he has. so off edward went into the city. afther a while edward finally admited it to himself "I'm lost" so he wandered around like a complete idiot going in cicrlecs appearently. so he finally gave in and with a lot of shame he walked up to the nearest person and asked where the armores where and found that he was standing right next to one and shamely walked away to the armorers only to find the door locked. he thought to himself great now what do I do so he looked around and across the street was an inn so he desided he would head to that inn and grab a few drinks and finally get some rest considering he still only had a sliver of health left.
and now I quit for a little while

ok back edward finally loitered around the shop area for a while while he waited for it to open then once it open he countiued his shopping spree. he bought all kinds of armor and a shiny new bow. but wait there was no arrows for sale. he went all over daggerfall looking for armorer and each one had no arrows for sale. finally he gave up one trying to find arrows. so he desided he wanted to visit the castle of daggerfall to see if it really did remind him of some old joke he read somewhere. appearently the joke was wrong and it was just the dark elvs think that way. anyways one of the nobles asked edward to run a smuggling operation for him to which edward declined he may have once been a theif before with his father but nomore he will run a decent life from now on sinse he was given a second chance afther his ship crashed. anyways afther leaveing daggerfall castle edward contiued to be lost in town when he came across two general stores next to each other he desided to see their wares and boy was he surprised arrows lots and lots of arrows he thought buying them all up for afther all he was trained in the bow and not the sword but up until this point he only had a sword. afther buying all the arrows with a big grin he asked the shop keeper if there was any work around and he was told to go to a store nearby and ask for this woman. afther getting there edward was told by the woman someone was trying to keep her and her soon to be husband from being married and asked edward to escort her to her husband and to the cerimony. edward desided to take the job not for the money but because of the love. so he escorted her to another little town named new something and found the house he was supose to be in. it was locked. he took his sword looked around and didn't see anyone so he picked the lock on the first try and once in the house he looked around and found a ladder to the attic to where he foudn the womans soon to be husband. afther this he took them downstairs and was about to leave when threee theives showed up and edward defeated all of them. there was so much stuff on the theives that edward was glad he had bought the wagon and paled up everything on his wagon and then took off to what he thought was the right church named singing steer.....well appearnetly the place he needed to go was a place called singing star so he wasted two days heading there and then three days traveling from one to the other luckly afther getting there he found the priest andt he woman and man where married and who knows what happend to then edward stood counting his 300 gold peices for the simple job and looked in his cart and said to himself its time to go shopping I need a new cape.
