At any rate, I figured I'd post here since I just booted up Daggerfall again after quite some time. Made myself a brand new character, an argonian warrior-assassin hybrid with some spells thrown in there for good measure. Mugged a bunch of thieves and archers on her way out of Privateer's Hold and went to the closest town to sell off her loot. After resting in a local tavern, she decided to look around for some work and was directed to a shopkeeper in town. Little did she know the job detailed smuggling some sensitive property to a neighboring city, but not caring all too much of the law and willing to do anything for some gold, she took it anyway. Once in the appropriate location, she asked the townies about a certain residence, the place where she was to meet her employer's contact. However, she received a letter before she could actually make her way there, warning her about an ambush. Equally suspicious of the letter and its writer, she decided to check out the place anyways, although not without a longsword drawn.
Problems arose when she found the place to be locked. Despite her skill in lockpicking, she failed to unlock the door and, in her frustration, resorted to bashing it down. This, of course, attracted the attention of the town guards. Knowing that if she was caught with the "sensitive property" in her possession, she had no choice but the slay the guardsmen hounding her, since retreat was certainly not an option, being cornered in the middle of town. After that was taken care of, she ducked into the house and searched for the contact, only to find that the letter hadn't been a lie. A heavily-armored mook was there to take the Indulcet from her, but he quickly met the business end of her sword. The fool had tried to threaten her! She who just took down three guards outside! After taking whatever seemed valuable off of his corpse, she left the house and began her escape, carefully avoiding any additional guards that may have been on the lookout for her. Thankfully, there was no need to scale any walls, as this particular settlement did not have any. Once out in the wilderness, she reread the letter and made her way to yet another town, being careful to avoid any unwanted attention from nosy peasants. Fortunately, nobody seemed to know about her exploits yet, so she could utilize the relative comfort of inns during her travels.
Once at her destination, she noted the city walls. Hoping that she wouldn't have to climb over them, she asked around for the White Gnome, a tavern that the letter-writer had requested she visit them at. Apparently, not even the residents of this city knew where it was, as she had to ask several people before she got a definitive answer! After trekking through the streets and alleyways, she finally found the tavern and let out a sigh of relief, knowing that the troublesome Indulcet would soon be off her hands and she would receive her promised pay. After sifting through the tavern-goers, she met the letter-writer, a young lady in green, quite comely by human standards. Unfortunately, the treacherous wench merely confiscated the Indulcet and made a snarky remark about how she "save me the trouble of being caught up in the middle of this mess". What!? As if! My argonian was sorely tempted to run her through right then and there, but reason stayed her hand. If she slew this pathetic ape now, she would almost certainly have to contend with the guards on her way out of the city. Reluctantly, she left without saying a word, rage concealed by her "alien" features. Taking a mental note of the merchant who had sent her on this waste of time, his contact, and the woman who had dared not pay her for her services, she quickly left the city behind, hoofing it to a neighboring province. While no one knew of her deeds yet, it was certain that they would be noticed sooner or later, and she had no intentions of sticking around when that happened. The journey took her only a scant few days, as her flight was fueled by an as if yet unquenched thirst for revenge, and of course, the paranoia that ensues when one knows that they may potentially be hunted down. Once satisfied that she had made sufficient progress, she settled down into an inn, too tired to care if anybody was suspicious of her.
And that is where the story ends for today. Forgive me, I write and then I can't stop. :slap:
Although, this is what I happen to love about Daggerfall. You get your random quests and they may end up like the hundreds of other times you did it, or it might just surprise you and do something different. Nevermind the fact that there's an infinite amount of them! I kind of miss it when I'm playing any other game with a set amount of things to do...
