Today I started a new character- and it's a
lot of fun so far.
I'm not sure why, but lately I've been wanting to make an Orc character. On top of that, I decided to try a female character for a change, so I made a female Orc. Her class is a customized Warrior; not because Orcs and fighting classes go hand in hand (which actually isn't true, a lot of people seem to have success with Orcish mages and sorcerers), but because it fit the role I wanted.
It was spectacular. I went for as much realism as possible, in addition to using the Alternate Beginnings 2 mod. I started out shipwrecked on a beach (the boat was a dinghy) with nothing more than a shirt, pants, the Chitin dagger stuck in the boat, three pieces of Kataougi meat that was in a sack in the boat, and the Mysterious Note the mod adds to point you to the package in Seyda Neen's Census and Excise office. That might not be a positive for some, but for me, the less you start out with, the better.
So! With the dagger as my only real defense (even then, I didn't have short blade as a major or minor skill, and even though I had hand to hand, it was too low to be of any real use in the wild), I just started walking. The character had just arrived in a place that she knew nothing about and had never been to, so I couldn't use the map. First time around, I headed right from where I started. After a while, I found a sign pointing to several cities. Following them, I wound up on a road surrounded by trees, on which I had to move around rocks to avoid what looked like a Mabrigash camp from a distance (it worked out in-character; generally, a group of robed women around a fire in the woods usually means something hostile). A little ways ahead, I was attacked and killed by a Kataougi. Nothing reminds you that you're using a new character more than getting killed by the local fauna.
The last save was right at the very beginning, so this time I took a left. Not long after this, I walked over a small pile of rocks and caught sight of the Gnisis silt strider across a river. That moment was almost as good as stepping off the boat at Seyda Neen.
In Gnisis, I had literally no money, and no easy way of getting money. This is where it got interesting (assuming you have an appreciation for these kind of things). With no other way of getting money, I went ahead and sold the dagger and meat...earning me a grand total of 3 drakes. So I went around to the clusters of Muckspunge to collect pieces of Muck to sell. Of course, the 18 pieces I managed to scraqe up got me only 4 or 5 drakes, I think, if that much. The river was the next target for searching. That actually produced some decent results: the Kelp Bladder and Sausage Pods sold for 21 drakes. I could have gotten more if a slaughterfish hadn't chased me out of the water. I know had enough to pay for a ride out of Gnisis, so I got a ride to Ald'Ruhn. That's as far as I've gotten so far. By the way, with the mods I have installed, attempting to get to Maar Gan or Ald'Ruhn on foot would have been suicidal, if not impossible.
It's those kinds of experiences in Morrowind that make you love the game.
