I had two new creature encounters today while adventuring across the eastern Mainland of Morrowind. (Tamriel Rebuilt Map 2)
The first one occurred in a damp cave along the coast. As I explored the tunnels, sometimes wading through waist deep water, I found little of interest and no treasure. Then I noticed something blue and large moving in one of the deep pools beside the main path. At first I thought it was group of Slaughterfish or perhaps a Bandit trying to escape, but as I got closer and re-lit my torch I noticed it was a large beast with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth.
It was a Sea Troll! I quickly checked my gear, and then dove in to kill it. After a few minutes of battle my stamina was waning, and I was also having trouble finding my target in the dark water. The Sea Troll knew it had the upper hand and it kept luring me deeper into the water in an attempt to remove my supply of fresh air. I had to retreat back to the shallow water in the tunnel above. Fearing the Sea Troll might gain the courage to follow me from the water, I traced my steps back to the entrance of the cave and decided I'd have a good rest under a nearby tree, so I could dry my clothes by a campfire.
My next encounter happened in a cave a few miles north. It looked like an average mining cave from the outside, but when I entered it and saw the large blue crystals jutting from the cavern walls, I knew there was magical properties to the cave. It was very dark, and very quiet. I knew there were enemies nearby because I was feeling too nervous to rest and catch my breath, but I couldn't see any threat. The tunnel was getting narrower, and then I spotted something hunched over in the middle of my path, in the dark it looked just like a Nix Hound... I was very wrong.
All of a sudden this "Nix Hound" stood up on its back legs and turned towards me. At first it did nothing else, but I was temporarily stunned with fear as I realized it was a Vermai! I drew my blade just in time, as it literally leaped into the air at me, attempting to knock me down. All I could think to do was continuously swing my sword in hopes that I could get the beast off balance. Finally, the foul thing slumped at my feet, leaving me almost completely drained of energy and my armor nearly broken. I cut out the Vermai's heart, knowing I could sell it to an Alchemist for some gold, and then I headed home. I marked the cave's entrance on my Map, in a few weeks I'll be heading back there to finish what I started.
whoa, story time.
