What did you think of the music in Skyrim?

Post » Wed Sep 04, 2013 3:04 am

I just played Oblivion for the first time in three years. After playing for about an hour or so it dawned on me how calm and soothing the music was compared to Skyrim's. For me it made me feel safe and secure in this land of peace, security, freedom and power. It was personified by the strong disciplined guards, big ordered cities and the symbol of Imperial power in the middle of the continent. Skyrim feels so harsh and unforgiving. But hey, maybe that's just my nostalgia. Your thoughts?

Amazing, I'm with you though in that the music tends to make certain instances tense when there's no real need. Overall I really like the "Boss" Themes when you fight Dragons, the Daytime tracks are amazing but force a tone not entirely fitting with the moment-to-moment, the Nightime Score is as close to musical perfection as life gets, the Town music is great, but considerably weaker than the previous three, and the dungeon music comes in as... Well, I encounter what I assume is a bug in some dungeons, where I can hear a soft echo of the day-night music and I really enjoy that, but the default stuff is just kind of meh.

Dungeons, towns daytime, towns night time, wilderness daytime, wilderness night time.

What i ment for specific tracks for caves, Dwemer ruins and nordic ruins. Like how Soul Cairn and Forgotten Vale have a unique background music.

It's easy to fall in love with the main theme, it's epic beyond words.

It's even more epic when you know the words and are able to sing it in English and the dovah deinok (dragon language)

I think Skyrim's music is the most uneven of the last three games. On the one hand it has my favorite piece of Elder Scrolls exploring music ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhJTMeytTWw On the other hand, some of the other pieces sound bland to me. There's one that sounds to my ear like a single held organ note lasting for over two minutes. And Skyrim's theme song is, in my opinion, the worst theme of any game Bethesda has ever made in their entire history. The laughable simian grunting of that male choir is, to my ear, the opposite of heroic: it is unintentionally funny.

So my verdict is mixed: not great, but not bad either.

You know, after listening to "Nerevar Rising", I wish they would've included that if you were on Solstheim. That would have been nice.

On a side note, this thread is so odd. It's more like the kind of thing you ask when the game is new.

But you know, that only amounts to 20% of the music. How do you feel about when it gets down to the singing itself?

I would say great but it doesn't beat Morrowind in terms of music.

I love the music, and the fact that Skyrim is a harsh and unforgiving place, makes it very appropriate for the setting. Soule does an amazing job of writing music that fits the land it's set in.
