What disabilities or impairments do you have that people do

What if it's a depression commonly experienced from soldiers returning home from war and not just your basic "I'm emo and I want attention" type depressed?

I used to have a very bad stutter and lisp until I was put into speech therapy at a young age. I was able to get rid of the lisp and most of the stutter, but it never fully disappeared.

I also have Tourette's syndrome. I have a tendency to jerk my head, clear my throat, and many other small things. No. I do not shout obscenities. :stare:
It is something that I have not been able to control very well. Some days are worse than others, and one of the major triggers for it is stress. Other days, it just happens.

I seriously don't know if you are joking.

I don't take jokes about this very lightly. I have dealt with so much crap from idiots who think they are so clever for trying to pretend that they have Tourette's or some other disorder. It is not clever, It is not funny, and I don't have much respect for those who make such jokes.

Nope not joking. Some people ask me about it. I also have a tick at odd times to shake violently for a quick second. My son does the same thing in terms of shaking.

For me, it would be the fact that I have 3 crushed verterbrae in my back, that cause me an immense amount of pain all day, every day, impairs my ability to move, prevents me from lifting anything over 10lbs(even that's stretching it really), and stops me from being able to work(I'm on Social security disability). so many people that know me but don't "know" me criticize me to my face and behind my back all the time, saying I should stop being a drain on society and just svck it up and go back to work and what not. I also have a handicap placard so I don't have to walk half a mile into a store when I do go to one, and I'm forever getting dirty glances(and occassionaly the rude remark, and even once in a while an actual confrontation) from people who see me park in those spots. Just because I'm only 31 doesn't mean I'm perfectly healthy and there's nothing wrong with me. Just because I"m not in a wheelchair, or don't have a cast, or anything else that is visible, doesn't mean there isn't something wrong with me. Pisses me off to no end ><

Longer than that. Latin for right hand: dexter, which is the root word of dexterity. Latin for left hand: sinister. Even ambidextrous, the term for being able to use both hands equally literally means "having two right hands". This is reflected in many languages.

Obviously, I am also a southpaw.

apparently in African tradition left-handedness was a sign of wisdom.

so I suppose lefties got that going for ourselves too though

I have a bunch of physical impairments, but they're all fairly obvious: one-eye, curved fingers, crooked nose, small air-way, webbed-feet, narrow ear canols, narrow nasal passages, a hole in my head, half my face is larger than the other

I have some real disabilities, such as that I'm deaf in one ear and my right arm has nerve damage.

Most people would never guess the deafness as I cover it well, and my arm inst visually too bad, but it mean I cannot do many normal things for people. Lift a heavy box? Nope. Do pages of handwritten work? Nope. And unless I explain it to someone they just think I'm a lazy person for not helping....even then, because it isn't visually deformed I've had people not believe me.

On the topic of writing though, my arm was completely paralyzed for a year, so I had to learn to write left handed, so now I can write with either hand.....freaks people out when I swap hands while writing.

I have seriously bad hand-eye coordination. Like, if someone throws something at me from quite a short distance away there's a better chance I'll drop it than catch it.

My mother told me when she went to school it was common in all school at the time, if you were left handed and wrote with your left hand they would slap you on the hand with a stick to discourage you and force you to write with your right hand, ah the good old days.

I don't think I do (not any more, used to have dreadful asthma but thankfully that has vanished). My wife, however, has suffered really badly from depression - in fact it nearly claimed her life two years ago. Over the years, I'm not sure that very many people realise just how debilitating and dangerous it can be. Maybe it's because it's so intangible and hard to isolate, being tangled up with so many other things that it really is hard to understand. And I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I have specs? That's about it really, and people understand them just fine, until I go into detail about why I need them other than "I can't see otherwise."

On further thought I do have a short attention span and a bad habit of hearing but not listening to people*
*strangely I listen and take in the most useless stuff, but when it comes to work and bosses telling me stuff it goes in one ear and out the other -_-

Mainly problems with stuff like agoraphobia and depression. They're things I try to work around as much as I can as I just want to get on with my life, but they're a bit of a nuisance. Fortunately most people seem to be fairly okay about stuff like that; of course you get the occasional one who's a jerk about it but everyone experiences that sort of thing now and then. There's other stuff too, which may be partly responsible for those problems; working quite hard to sort it out, and while things will likely never be perfect, I figure any improvement is a success in its own right.

Oh yeah, and stuff like diabetes and heart trouble and stuff are nuisances too, but y'know.

I have a learning disability brought on by aultisim with is also brought on by a head injury I sustained as a kid. I learn new things at a very slow pace and most managers don't have the time to train a person like me so getting a job is neal to none. Another problem I have is Chronic Migraines from the head injury I had, if this hits and I'm not near the medication to stop it in time, I'm out of commission for the remander of the day. I get by on SSI---it's just enough to pay the bills which is what I do first before I do anything else.

Asperger's. People understand it, but autistic spectrum disorders still aren't fully understood. Causes are hard to pinpoint. I also have an odd inability of fully understanding what left and right is. If someone says east and west, I will understand, but I will struggle to fully comprehend what left and right is. My anxiety disorder is pretty severe, so a lot of people have to act as if they are walking on eggshells when it comes to dealing with me.

My anxiety often impairs my ability to speak, and can make me near catatonic. My math tutoring is now being done at home due to how bad my anxiety gets in my town's high school. I actually had to be put into a virtual schooling program due to how bad my anxiety was and have been doing that kind of schooling since 8th grade. My anxiety attacks can last for a whole day sometimes and once one starts, it lasts. I even will have clusters of anxiety attacks if the anxiety wants to make my day painful to live through.

I had that for a while - I found the best way to manage it was to take anti-histemines. Then one day it decided to go away

This is exactly why I made this topic.

The fact we might see a perfectly normal person dressed well and looking nice and fit but than assume that person is well off and should be on top of everything. It is beyond frustrating.

Thank you for sharing your story. The issue is people who do not out right show their disability that we often get treated like there is nothing wrong with us or someone's visual disability overrules ours. I remember reading a news article on a story of the battle of the disabilities at a place of business. On one hand a blind person was allowed to bring in his or her seeing eye dog and told they have a right to stay but the person allergic to all dogs is told his or her disability isn't as grave and that a blind mans disability is more important to accommodate. It makes you think. If a person could die from being around a dog how is it a blind man's disability over rules a person who could die from being around a seeing eye dog?

I have the same issue. At first growing up I thought it was because I always assume when I tried to say left I actually right it was because I was left handed and confused but lets say I am in the car and there is a blizzard out and I meant to say its cold....I will actually say its hot. This is very easy to cover up because than the person next to me will assume the heat is on to high so no embarrassment. I also have a habit of mixing up words to where they will be inverted to what I actually intended.

It's werid but my anxiety sometimes fixes it self when I push myself out there. For a minute my body and head will swell and I will just keep talking and sometimes make fun of myself helps my anxiety. Problem is it doesn't always work and its hard for me to start relationships with people due to that. Dating wise when I was younger from 18-23 it was easy because I was in shape and people would approach me and I would then question them.
