What does your character's name mean?

Post » Sun Oct 02, 2011 11:41 am

Many of our characters have foreign names. Some we just make up out of the blue, some are directly taken from another character or idea, and some fit within the lore of TES but are still made up.

So, what does your name mean? Even if you use a name that might be common in your real culture, like Marcus in my case, what does that name mean in the context of the game?

My Breton sorcerer is named Gormgalac. That is a bastardized Irish translation of 'Blue Moon'.

Morrowind:
Aalaan - My fantasy take on my first name; Allen

Oblivion:
Khulain - A loosely based translation of the Celtic name Cuchulain.

Skyrim:
Marr'Taan (?) - My fantasy take on my middle name; Martin
Sylvan / Cylvian (?) - Originally taken from "Sylvania", the home of the Vampire Counts in Warhammer, but a google search of the word "Sylvan" also shows that it refers to an association with the woods / forest, an association that fits my character who will be a Wood Elf that can command creatures. (Also, with my Necromantic type skills like Conjuration, my association to the Necromantic Vampire Counts also fits the character)

(?) = I haven't 100% decided on my character's name for Skyrim yet.

Persephone. The Greek goddess of spring and growth as well as Hades' wife, thus queen of the underworld.

She's a Dunmer.

For my nord-battlesmith: Vilding - classic scandinavian viking name and translates into english as "wild one" :flamethrower:

For my argonian assassin/thief: Dalk - as quoted from the TES book Infernal City page 22, chapter 2:

"A boy was once born with a knife instead of a right hand, or so Colin heard. [censored] and attempted murder planted him in his mother, but she had lived and turned all of her thoughts toward vengeance. She laughed when he carved his way out of her and went gleefully into the world to slaughter all who had wronged her any many who had not. And when his victims were drowning in their own blood, they might ask, "who are you?" and he would answer simply, "Dalk", which in the northern tounge is an old word for knife."

The swedish word for dagger is dolk. :ninja:

My main character usually has my name since I'm playing it more or less the way I would.

My name is "Christopher" which means Christ bearer, and since that guy doesn't exist in the world of Skyrim it has no actual meaning.

My name is usually Terram, I really have no idea why I like it. It kinda gives off the Farmboy-esque feel.
