What is he holding in the background?

It looks like a short sword in the left hand (On the right side of the screen) and some kind of stave in the other, but I'm not sure.

LEFT : Nordic silver sword.

Looks like Dragonborn wouldn't take side in the civil war.

Looks like a long sword and a short sword/dagger, or a short sword and a dagger.

Whatever it is I believe they are definitely two types of swords.

What is Dovakhiin holding in the background?

A dagger (or short sword) in his right hand and a long sword in his left.

lol... I hate how people say dovahkiin like it's the name of the character.

Dovahkiin is more of a description than a name - like 'outlander' in Morrowind.

Lol, I completely agree. Most people call him Dovahkiin as a title, like Outlander, or Hero of Kvatch, which is ok, since we can't really refer to the main character by any other title/name. What frustrates me is the people who think that will be his actual name, or are going to name him that. Have you ever heard of a King named King?

Yeah, but either Dovahkiin or Dragonborn are badass names. I'm personally naming my (Dunmer) dragonborn Meven Selas. Btw, your comment is off-topic and so is my entire reply. Oops.

Not at all. Its like calling the player in Morrowind "Nerevarine." Which is completely correct.
