So what is DUST?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:55 am

So I was cleaning my room today, and while I was dusting, that got me thinking. I know that dust always settles in areas that are never touched or cleaned regularly, but what exactly IS dust, where does it come from?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_(His_Dark_Materials) is an elementary particle that is attracted to most sentient creatures in the multiverse.

Oh, you mean dust, not Dust? Well if you pay close attention around you and the lighting is just right, you'll see that there are always plenty of things in the air (hairs, soil, sand, car exhaust crap, etc...). Well, just like extra sugar in a coffee or pulp in orange juice, gravity will in the long term tend to make it all fall and accumulate on the ground. It's quite simple really.

Bolding done by me. Not to side track the post, but since I read this, it reminded me of what I read a few weeks ago. Something about it's recomended (forgot by who) to keep your toothbrushes 5 feet from the Toilet, just for this reason.

In your house, on the ground, this is a mix of dead skins, very thin mineral particles (sand, clay, cement), pieces of dead insects, poo of insects etc....
In the air, it is slightly different. It is mainly very thin silt particles plus a bit of clayey particles. Funny enough, most of the dust of northern hemisphere of the earth (I think this is as high as 60%) is coming from one remote area in the north of Chad. I have been in N'djamena, the capital and I can tell you this is a very hot and dusty place. I heard that this dust pool in the north is ten times more dusty...

Yep. It's the very same reason they have outhouses. You take a dump outside, then you go back in for everything else.

For you arachnophobes out there... Dust has an awful lot of powdered decayed spider remains.
