What's eating my fps?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 12:43 am

I recently managed to scraqe enough cash together to build a new computer. It's no uber system, but can handle current games fine on high settings - modded Fallout 3 included.

It also handles vanilla Oblivion fantastically. Never drops below 60 fps in any situation, every setting on the highest possible at 1440x900. Thing is, when I add my mods the game goes crazy. It wobbles between 60 and 10 fps unless I drop all the sliders to 25% and lags like crazy in combat regardless. I haven't installed QTP3R or RAEVWD or any other graphic enhancers. I do use stutter remover and streamline, but even then streamline has a hard time keeping up with my really crazy fps. Is this normal for what is just basically a clean FCOM install?

When I disable all my mods things go back to awesome on max everything again.

Here's my spec:

Really? I've heard about that but I've had no problems at all with my other games. I'll go back to the 186 ones and see if it helps.

Additionally, the Pentium Dual-Core will hold you back. It's labeled as an E**** processor, but is only based very loosely on the C2D architecture. At heart, it's still an over-powered Pentium D.

Yeah, it's a stopgap till I can get an E8xxx or one of the quad series in a few months. It's enough for everything I play EXCEPT OBLIVION it seems.

Edit: Going back to the 186 drivers didn't change a thing (in any of my games).

No, it isn't at all based on the Pentium D architecture. All it is is a E7200 with less cache. That's literally the only difference. It's 100% Core 2 Duo.

You got some script heavy mods (Francisco's, OOO, MMM, FCOM, Tamriel Travelers, etc...). That is what is killing your FPS. QTP3 wouldn't even do that (its a graphics intensive mod and your GPU is fine). Its not necessarily your CPU (its not that bad - about like an Athlon X2 5400+), its not your GPU, its not the 190.XX drivers. If you have a large load of script heavy mods you need a pretty darn beefy CPU to deal with it. You'll need to assess the performance hit of each one, decide what you can live without and go from there.

I didn't think I would have this much trouble with FCOM and its ilk. Oh well, I'll just have to make do with OOO and a few lighter mods till I can get a new cpu.

If it was, then it wouldn't be labeled a Pentium. NONE of the true C2Ds have Pentium in their names.

No, he's right. The "Pentium Dual-Core" is a stripped down C2D. The Pentium name was slapped on for marketing reasons.

However, there is a difference between "stripped down" and "lower cache." Which is it?

It's called 'who cares, the E5300 is a mediocre cpu as we all know and the branding and manufacturing process of it are irrelevant to this thread'.

Thanks for your help guys, sometimes this tech support forum is a joke. Calling in a lock. :goodjob:
