What exactly are Nymphs, and how do they fit into TES lore

Post » Sat Aug 28, 2010 1:31 pm

I got to finally play Daggerfall awhile back, after years of trying to find it. But sadly I just couldn't adjust to the graphics or controls. But one of the things that caught my eye during character creations was Nymph. I don't remember if was for her background or what, but my character started with a book called "A scholar's guide to Nymphs" and she was naked, lol. But since I didn't get too far into Daggerfall(I never made it out of the first dungeon...~sigh~) I was thinking about making a character like that for Oblivion, but since I usually like to stick to the lore and role play I was wondering if someone could give me alittle information regarding Nymphs in TES and that particular trait in Daggerfall.

It's a language skill, so when you get near a Nymph they won't attack you. There are a couple language skills more for other monsters. See http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Skills.

The book, http://www.imperial-library.info/dfbooks/b021_nymph.shtml is just about all we have.

There are no Nymphs in Oblivion so you might have to look for a mod that puts them in.

They are creatures that must be burned and slaughtered in the name of Khorne!

Not exactly a difficult thing to do, all you have to do is lose the clothes and there you have it...

Well, Oblivions character models aren't exactly Waterhouses Nymphs. (For those who don't know, it's art. I just don't know if the prudish Draco and Polyanna will approve of a link.) Generally I wouldn't care much but they're supposed to instil a sense of abstract beauty.

edit:

Slightly more relevant. Wiki mentions:

The symbolic marriage of a nymph and a patriarch, often the eponym of a people, is repeated endlessly in Greek origin myths; their union lent authority to the archaic king and his line.

Sounds like the Remanada.

Elder Scrolls needs more naked women in the future. I liked in Daggerfall where I walked into a tavern room and there was a naked girl sitting on the floor. And I Want them to bring back the 10 volume version of "The Real Barenziah". The story was awesome, I don't know why they didn't leave it the way it was.

Morrowind has the Better Bodies mod and Oblivion has that locked-out art file.

As for The Real Barenziah, it was previously banned by the Empire, until the Temple-censored version surfaced. I think that the current version was printed in Morrowind, likely sanctioned by Barenziah herself.

Well, I've used the better bodies mod before, but something seems odd about the hands, they look clenched and crooked. Plus the faces don't seem to match, rather, they look like they were designed by weeaboos.

Well, if you're playing the PC version of Oblivion, or Morrowind, there's plenty of nudity mods out there. I'm using one myself(HGEC nvde body replacer and the robert's male body replacer).

B)That's Better Heads, not Better Bodies. Unless you were talking about the Vanilla heads, though I fail to see how they resemble anything made by Weeaboos.

I'm assuming that they're not Daedra, or animals, nor exactly humanoids. Probably sort of lesser nature spirits - something associated with Kynareth would be my guess.

Kynareth is the god of the heavens, spirits of the air, winds and such. Nymphs are nothing like that. They're stamina draining sixpots.

Sounds like something right up Dibella's alley.

Hmmm yeah come to think of it, they do seem to fit Dibella better.

Do we know for certain that the Divines have servants, like Daedric Princes do?

I know Akatosh has his Jills, so that would seem to indicate that each greater Aedra has some loyal spirits which help do their bidding on Nirn, especially in their physical absence (an absence which is pretty much a perpetual matter of fact, so long as Nirn is intact.)

Most servants of the Divine that I know of are devoted mortal worshippers.

Maybe a "nymph" is just a member of a cult of Dibella worshipers?

Or, you know, a DnD hold-over.

We get http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spriggan now, though.

I dunno. From the book mentioned, they're pretty one with nature, so I'd suspect more in-line with Kynnareth. Either way, Khorne doesn't approve and they must be slaughtered!

There are a few Spriggans in Kynareths' Grotto in the Knights of the Nine quests.

Wouldn't surprise me if the nords of Skyrim thought Kyn breathed life into Spriggans, almost like how the Skaal believe the All-Maker breathed life into the world, and also the trees, causing them to be spriggans.

For what it's worth, in one of Loranna's Lore RPs several years ago, the developer Ted Peterson showed the spheres (planes) of the various Aedra; in Dibella's realm, a man who had lived as a saint in her service was rewarded after death with an Eden-like setting, including nymphs. (Since this was written by Ted Peterson, it was better than it sounds.)

This was for a roleplay instead of canon, but it's indicative of nymphs serving Dibella.
