What exactly does Soul Tear do?

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 5:02 pm

I'm just looking for some help on how to use this shout and what it actually does. I have all three words unlocked.

I think it's like a raise dead shout. The http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Soul_Tearsays:

Soul Tear is a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Dragon_Shouts that rips the very soul from an enemy, turning its corpse into an ally.

See, I tried casting it on a dead bandit, but it just said he resisted it.

A mere low-level bandit? If it is a raise dead shout it might have a really crappy level cap.

The reason that didn't work is because you cast it on the person when they're alive and it removes there soul ( I think it gets sent to the Soul Cairn ) and there body becomes your thrall. I think you can only use it one people and not animals which is kind of bad

Either that or you don't have all the levels perhaps? Might be like one of the dragon-call shouts where you have to use the third-tier shout for it to do anything. Most of the 5 second recharge shouts are like that, and the first shout of it has a 5 second recharge....so yeah.

@NickGodly; Ahhhh, thank you. I'll give that a go.

@The Content Man; I said that I had all three words of the shout, so it's safe to assume that I use the full shout, rather than the first two parts. Thank you anyway man!

You have to shout at a living enemy. If you kill the enemy with the shout, not only will you capture their soul (like a soul trap spell or weapon), but the fallen enemy will be raised like a reanimate corpse spell. There's no level cap, as far as I've been able to determine. I killed a giant with it, and he raised up and murdered my foes just fine.

Edit: If you don't kill the enemy with the shout, but kill them while they're still glowing blue, you just capture the soul, and they don't get reanimated.

Ah, I see now. Thank you very much. I can really see myself using this shout a lot. How long does the thrall last for?

Idk about the thrall part but you can also get there soul in a gem if you have one big enough. I play on master and though it didn't take it's soul I used it on a giant and it took half his health which was awesome

Soul Tear works on every NPC that can die, excluding dragons.

If it lasted longer I would consider it. Not worth it IMO.

It's not a "Raise Dead" shout. On weak enemies or when a strong enemy is about to die shout at him with all 3 words. He will die and revive instantly. I think he is permanent untill he is killed. Works on everything except dragons.

It Soul Traps and nearly instant-kills everything you hit it with. Definitely worth it.

I love my awesome dead thrall, dual wielding legendary dragonbone weapons, forsworn ravager lady.

My guess is using this would cause her to die, while the lame thing takes her place?

I think I'll stick with her instead.

All it does is raise dead, kind of a let down. Basically you have to kill your enemy WITH the shout to get the effect.

Lot of fractured answers here.

First off, it does damage. For a shout, it's actually decent damage. If you manage to kill a non-dragon with it and have an available soul gem, the gem will be filled and the enemy will be immediately raised to fight for you.

You can also use it on corpses, in which case it just acts as a raise dead spell.

As far as resisting goes, there doesn't seem to be a definitive cap. But stronger enemies seem to resist more often than weaker ones. I do know that I've managed to capture and raise a Death Overlord and even a giant.

I've never had it work on a corpse, if I don't kill the enemy with the shout it does nothing.

Works for me. Try on some low level bandits and it ought to work.
