What exactly IS Oblivion (not the game!)?

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 2:24 am

I have always thought of Oblivion as a sort of other dimension. But after reading the Oblivion section of the 3rd PGE, I am once again confused as to what exactly Oblivion is? Is it the outer-space that can be seen from Nirn? I thought that this was just the heavens of Mundus. But is Oblivion a physical place or just a dimension beyond Mundus?

Also, what is Aetherius and how is it different from Mundus/Nirn?

the Tamriel version of Hell, it is where the Dremora reside... you should go to Elder Scrolls WiKi for your future questions, all you need to know is there.

The world is an onion, Mundus in the middle, Oblivion surrounding it (maybe as an opaque cloud of half-cooled creatia) with the princes planes as independent worlds with the stars and the sun being holes through Oblivion to Aetherius which is outermost and is then (possibly) surrounded by a primordial void. Except in more than 3 spatial dimensions so that up is not necessarily the shortest way from the center outwards.

That is how I imagine it is.

Oh dear, not the Wiki.

Oblivion is the blackness that you see when you look up at night on Nirn. The daedra have their own pockets of Oblivion that they can influence and create as they like.

That is the worst suggestion possible to make on the internet. The only thing you got right is that Dremora are there. The thing you got the most wrong is that there is anything to know on TES Wikia. It is the worst. Seriously, it said Titus Mede II is the second Emeror of the Mede Dynasty and Attrebus' brother... 160 years after Infernal City.

Oblivion is simultaneously an alternate dimension and outer space, the void coterminal with Nirn/Mundus witch is simultaneously a dimension and state of being as well as a normal, spherical planet. Oblivion "relams" are "plane(t)s," objects like Nirn that are both spiritual states of being as well as objects floating in a distinct point in space, each ruled by (and each itself) a Daedra Prince. Aetherius is the place you get to by passing through stars, where magic comes from. It is where some form of the Aedra are as well, but for the most part their corpses are Nirn.

The standard answer goes something like this: "http://www.imperial-library.info/content/oblivion."

Regarding your question about whether Oblivion is a separate plane of existence or the space surrounding Nirn or some sort of physical place: it is all of those things.

Another good book to read is http://www.imperial-library.info/content/doors-oblivion.

Also, what is Aetherius and how is it different from Mundus/Nirn?

Aetherius is a plane of pure magical energy beyond Oblivion. Magika enters Mundus from Aetherius through the Sun and stars, which are holes in Oblivion created by the departure of Magnus and other et'Ada.

the Tamriel version of Hell, it is where the Dremora reside... you should go to Elder Scrolls WiKi for your future questions, all you need to know is there.

Bad. Just bad.

EDIT: Right. Ninj'd five times over.

so, hypothetically, if one took a space ship from nirn could u reach the planes of oblivion or is it a completely intangible place? like are the shivering isles floating out there in space somewhere on a planet or is it some sort of other dimension? sorry if this question seems silly its just really been bugging me...

People have done so, they were called the Mananauts, and their purpose was to get to Aetherius to find some Dawn magic. It's possible, but probably easier just to have a Prince open a portal.
