Fallout 2, without a doubt.

I feel that the original is the "purest" of the series, which is to say, it's undiluted by any direct predecessor, it has the most intense "Fallout-y" atmosphere, and the characters and storyline are more rich, stark and primordial than in any of the sequels.

However, Fallout 2 is longer, larger, gives you more toys to play with, vastly improves companion AI, offers more quests to accomplish, has cult classic references, is more "advlt," and its locations and important factions and characters are pretty damned cool.

So for me, Fallout 2 edges out the original.

Fallout 2

-Hilarious floating comments
-better story
-'advlt' content - pormstar,Cats Paw :P etc. etc.
-great RP value
-possibility to be ugly AND stupid at the same time ... and it affects somehow your surroundings
-You got hitched. Well that is your problem, not ours. XD (Marriage)
-New Reno and altering and ending for it if you f**k the Bishop daughter (without condems)
-so many more and so little space.......

In order:
  • Fallout 1
  • Fallout 2
  • Fallout Tactics
  • Fallout 3
  • I don't have any DLC...

So you see, I can not judge how the rest should be.

Fallout 1 and 2 was ok Dialogue in my opinion was just as average as FO 3. Personally I feel tactics was better then the first two games. Storyline on both 1 and 2 was average at best. Tactics was good. FO3 was also average.

I liked tactics the most. Now, before I get crucified, the reason is gameplay.

Tactics didn't have the storyline depth of 1 or 2, but the group concept and tactical gameplay made it for me. I spent more hours on Tactics (In both single and multiplayer) than I did in F1 and 2 combined. Having only one character just didn't have the same gameplay depth to me. The gameplay just is slightly more important to me than the storyline, I suppose.

I'd probably rank them:

1. Fallout Tactics
2. Fallout 2
3. Fallout 1
4. Fallout 3
516. Fallout: BOS

How come every time that someone starts a thread like this one: "What fallout game do you like the most"
It always turns into a list of top 3 or top 5?

I thought it was a singular choice of which of these games you like THE most, not in what order you like them.

And I like fallout 2 for.. Well, the others who favoured it has already said what I like in their previous posts.

I played FO3 first.
But I actually went and bought the first couple. Not a fan of them.

Fallout 2 for me.

Fallout 1 has the better story/atmosphere/feeling, but Fallout 2 is the better 'game'. If I could play FO1 with FO2 mechanics it would be fantastic.

Fallout tactics has the best combat. It would be great to play the first 2 fallout games with FOT combat system.

Me too, I've never found the RT mode to be very fun. It wasn't originally supposed to be part of the game at all anyway.

Fallout 3, with or without DLC is the best in my personal opinion, fallout 2 closely following.

Yeah, I mostly used RT in Tactics when I just wanted to mop up a bunch of weak enemies quickly. For the "serious fighting" I did TB al lthe way.

I prefer them in numerical order, starting from 1. ;)

I've never played Tactics.

Fallout 1. It had the best atmosphere, balance of humor, and storyline if you ask me. FO2 is great but I'm still very annoyed by the general direction that Black Isle went with when designing it. It didn't feel post-apocalyptic or "Fallouty" like FO1 did. Hell, if I didn't know better, I'd say the game resembled some generic lawless Western. There was just too much emphasis on drugs, thieves, politics, not enough on survival. Gone was the feeling of desolation and hopelessness, one of the critical Fallout themes. I understand that things can change in the Wasteland over the course of a generation, but FO2 feels so different to me.

Oh, and I'd recommend adding an "I've only played one game" option. These polls are so biased otherwise.

Well, some places have to rebuild themselves over time.
That's what happened in Fallout 2.
I mean it's a long time since the bombs dropped.
They can't just go around and loot stuff and raid places and live off the scrap.
They would have to rebuild some form of society sooner or later.
Dosen't mean it haven't got a fallout feel.
Yea it would get boring if the world actually restored itself but that's just something that have to happen.

1. Fallout 3 by far, when I played the originals this is what I always wished it would be.
2. Fallout 2 bigger gameworld then FO1, but horribly buggy without user fixes and has the worst atmosphere out of the series. Also way to easy.
3. Fallout 1 much better story then FO2, but way too short. On my first playthrough I finished it in maybe 6-7 hours with every sidequest done, every area explored and all dialogue read.

The first two games, were okay for their time(though didn't quite compare to the Infinity Engine games), but were far too easy, as you could beat them on high difficulty levels using nothing but rocks and throwing knives. Fallout 3 is an easy game as well, but atleast you have to put a little effort into it other than "aim for eyes and one shot every enemy".
Also companions are dumb as bricks across the board, but in FO3 they atleast won't randomly kill you as soon as you give them an automatic weapon.

Can't agree with this.

In F3 you can't give them orders and such. There is no interaction with them and they pretty feel like some lifeless cannon fodders.
