What If Fallout 4 Has More Than Just Power Armor?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 8:31 pm

One thing that I noticed is that the animations for climbing into power armor seem fairly versatile. It feels like too much work to waste on "just" power armor...which makes me wonder if Fallout 4 will be getting something even bigger than power armor.

Fallout 4 takes place near the Institute, after all. Is it possible we'll also get bigger, more "mech" like suits, or be forced to fight them at one point? I know we don't want the game turning into Titanfall or a mech game, but it seems like an interesting idea. We know that the government was working on at least one giant robot (and got it working), so would mechs or some form of heavily armored vehicle other than vertibirds be out of the question? Discuss!

Edit: Just for clarification, I'm referring to mechs in between the size of power armor and a behemoth. Not super large, but definitely beefier and slower than regular power armor. Like the cargo mover from Aliens.

Don't know, could be just power armor. The only vehicles seems to be vertibirds.

Mechwarrior: Commonwealth 4?

That would be neat, you can't go wrong with giant stompy robots. It'd make for a nice "boss" encounter anyways, like that giant roboscorpion you fight in Old World Blues. Of course there'd need to be some better animations for it, there's a reason that thing was in what was basically a giant garage and glued to the floor. Im sure The Institute would have something along those lines for some sort of huge military conflict, but I think what depends on us seeing it is more to do with the engine/technology being able to make it in a satisfactory way.

I don't know, I'd rather they not do that kind of thing. Seems like they would do it for a cinematic only thing like they did with Liberty Prime which actually loses it's charm fast.

Interesting idea, but im not sure id like it too much.

Remember that power armor is the "heavy mech suit" of the fallout universe, it was never meant to be yet another article of clothing. Yet at the same time it was (made just another peice of armor) in fallout 3 and NV. So it seems only right that they add these animations and give power armor the feel that it should have had to begin with. You say its too much work for just power armor, I would disagree and say its the least they could do to bring power armor to position it should have been in the first place.

Just re-watch those trailers and just notice how much power armor has changed from bland armor, to walking tank suit it was meant to be. That is opinion.

EDIT: also remember that power armor is not longer a singular amor but a collection and collage of different variants and needs versitile animations.

I absolutely agree with you. It's more that with such great animations and what appears more "gravity" (power armor just visually seems more heavy in this game), using the assets again for something even heavier to really drive home the "heft" seems like a good idea.

No mechs, no 'giants', no Komamura bankai.

Alright, I wouldn't mind Komamura bankai. But only that!

I imagine it was made specific for Power Armor. Bethesda is pretty obsessed with details, at least I though so before, now though I'm sure of it. Every button is made specific (or at least is view able)? That's impressive.

I'm hoping they stick with just PA otherwise it would just get stupid with bloody atlas stomping buildings.
I'd love to see beth make a mech warrior game but I doubt it will happen

I wasn't really thinking about something that big. I hate to bring up something from an FPS, but think like the size and agility of the Mantis from Halo. Not enough to stomp on buildings, but enough to do damage.

Something that big would probably ruin the game. I'm thinking a bit smaller. Like Frank Horrigan's power armor without the need for mutations.

Oh most definitely. I was just being a bit wistful and humorous.

On a more serious bend...perhaps a Synth Control Harness? The ability to hop into a VR Rig and take control of a Synth robot for exploration in a exceptionally hazardous zone?

I also suspect the animation will be used for whatever method of cryogenic suspension is utilized to get the Sole Survivor two hundred years into the future.

Since the animations are there, you can bet modders will make use of them.......

I'd like to see some mods (or Vanilla features) so that you can take some cyborg perks (as in NV, 3, and 2) that will increase the utility of PA or other similar high tech gear.

That would be pretty cool! It might be tough from a gameplay perspective because you could possibly use it to leave areas prematurely and mess things up. Anyway, I don't understand why people are so opposed to the idea of mechs. I mean, if they were like Titanfall mechs, sure, I'd understand. I just mean mechs that are more powerful than conventional power armor, but with enough drawbacks that it would be extremely situational. What I'm really talking about is bigger, bulkier, power armor.

Hopefully it's just for PA, and likely is at this point, considering how near the release date is from now. The lore for PA states that it was meant as a replacement for mechanized units, and to be a man sized tank. So why they would have mechs of any sort, other than PA (if you count it as a type of mech,) doesn't make sense.

I doubt there will be any real mechs. I see a VR Rig to control a Snyth unit directly would be about as close as we'd actually get in the game proper.

With the proliferation of Mister Handies, Protectrons, Robo-brains, and the like...there really wouldn't be much of a call for Mechs. And the lack of this world's creation of the transistor means the mechs our real world armed forces are testing wouldn't be available.

Well power armor works under a similar idea as a mech, just much lighter weight and more maneuverable. It's not such a stretch to think somebody might look at trading some of the weight for more armor or firepower. After all, for Bethesda to show all the power armor available to us in just one trailer seems strange. I wouldn't be surprised if we see what I'm talking about as an option of some sort while actually assembling the armor.

I like the power armor, and the way we're going to be using it. But personally I don't want them going overboard with the powered mech piloting. I would rather that not become the...gimmick?

If they don't mind taking a dump on the universe they should just bring out the jet pack mechs and jaegers and all that.

Never mind that PA, FEV, and Vertibirds were cutting edge tech before damn near everyone in the world died. Turns out Liberty Prime and Ultra Mech Fun Time were being produced too. I mean hey, why not? It's just a game.

Liberty Prime seems more a Doomsday option, if the military failed to dislodge the Chinese from Alaska.

I mean yeah, Prime is lunacy (He throws NUKES, for cripes sake)...but he's a lunacy that made sense for the pre-war era as we understand it. I mean, look at the folks running Big Mountain - Mobius' take on the Giant Robot wasn't far off from Liberty Prime.

I didn't like Liberty Prime as an actual functioning thing. As a pie in the sky half brained scheme, or a plan that never came to fruition.

For me Liberty Prime up and moving was the final nail in the coffin for Fallout 3...Mothership Zeta was just desecrating the corpse
