What first? Main quest or civil war?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:03 am

I'm sure this has been discussed to death, however, I can't really find anything about it.

How are the civil war and main quest linked? The legion quests seem to be aimed at low level characters, but while you're busy with that, dragons have fun devasting villages, farms and even whole forts. Should I now try to hurry the main quest? Is there evidence what is "supposed" to be done first?

Many thanks in advance.

Probably best to do the civil war first as the main quest will force a truce.

Temporarily.
Beat the main quest, and it's open again.

Is there something I'm going to miss? Like Thalmor commenting on the ongoing war or General Tullius talking about dragons?

Been a long time since I did either the MQ or the civil war questlines - but even on toons now who don't start any of that, I get the same dialog and commentary. The scripting's not real tight - I doubt you'll miss anything. In my experience, the Thalmor don't do a lot of commenting on anything - other than if my toons don't get out of their faces they're going to kill them.... uh huh.

This time I did the civil war first, but next time I will do the main quest first (just to do it different and to see the peace treaty)

I like to do them at the same time because you can't finish the civil war without getting to a certain point of the main quest.

You don't need to do one before or after the other. You can do them in parallel to each other.

Do I have to say, "spoilers follow" in a spoiler forum? Anyway:

If you don't pick a side in the civil war, you will have an option to negotiate a truce during the MQ. If you have started the civil war (picked a side), you will lose the option to negotiate a truce during the MQ.

Another point to consider, especially if you're a completionist-type, if you choose not to pick a side and complete the civil war questline, you will miss out on a word wall and a dragon claw, as these things are in a part of a dungeon that only becomes accessible during the civil war quest. Lastly, you will never be able to furnish and take ownership of the house in Windhelm, Hjerim, if you do not complete the civil war questline.

Sorry if i have to contradict you,but you have that option during the MQ even if you have picked a side in the civil war - of course only if you've not completed yet all the related CW quests  .

I have done the main quest up to The Throat of the World and I decided I really would like the house in Windhelm. I get distracted doing all the side quests and I need more space to store my stuff . I have also enjoyed forging and enchanting and I think the setup there is pretty good so I think I will now do the Civil War Quest . I don't want to do the t reaty thing anyway.

Why do people keep using the word 'toon' like that, it makes me think of Who Framed Rodger Rabbit. Not that that's a bad thing, but still.

*sigh* I've been using the word toon to refer to an in-game avatar since about 1986. I don't know what "roger rabbit" is, but I was very surprised to find out that toon was common parlance in WoW when I started playing it 6+ years ago.

I'm wondering if I can stick it to one side or the other at the truce meeting in the MQ? Will anything happen if I do it? Will Dovahkiin be stopped if she tries?

As for spoilers in a spoiler forum, I think it's just considerate...there are all levels of spoiling. I'd look in here for something specific before I wanted to know everything and it was a bit dangerous but people were saying spoiler if it was something big.

Suddenly I'm imagining my final battle in Sovengarde starting very differently...

Aludin: Remember me Felldir? When I killed Hakon One-Eye, I talked JUST LIKE THIS!!!

On topic, I did the main quest first because I felt dealing with the World Eater was a tiny bit more pressing than putting Ulfric in his place.

Is there a poll out there somewhere asking who does which quest first? There are so many conflicting answers I'm not sure which to do.

I don't think it really matters much. You can actually do them pretty concurrently AFAIK. Maybe just do first whatever sounds to you like the most fun?

Dem nostalgic nightmares man, but it was Golden-Hilt who was killed by Alduin.

It seems the guild quests are ment to be attempted early, as they hand you gear related to their playstyle very early on, two cheap/free spells, some enchanted rings for enchanters, and a set of robes from the College, Skyforge Steel Armour from the Companions, and whatever the other two guilds give you. Even the Imperial Legion gives you a free set of armour (yet no-one in the Legion sells any sort of Imperial gear except the bow).

I never heard the word 'toon' in that context before coming to this forum. It's still wierd, most CRPGs are in the style of traditional animation.

Well, if you play WoW, you'd recognize it. As to "in the style of traditional animation".... I have NO idea what you're talking about.

As to "toon" - I'm told that it's short for "cartoon", as the animated representation of "you" in a given game. I preferred it always to the other form of reference, "paper doll"....

I don't see what's cartoonish about how characters appear in Skyrim or most other RPGs. 'Paper doll' really only refers to a little picture of your character in inventory screens, like in the other Elder Scrolls games.

Also, your signature seems to just be a massive brag over how 'old-school' you are, or suggests you believe age gives your word weight. Quite a common belief in fandoms...
