What ES Games have you played?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 5:54 pm

ive played both morrowind and oblivion. both had things that really annoyed me.
morrowind was boring, to much read, lot of getting stuck, overpowered, stupid npc talk if you came near, cliff binders.
oblivion was bad story, to much combat, to much health on monsters, lame quests, to much scripted events, no real reason why you were there or why you were stronger then everyone.
i think skyrim will be even less. more on rails quests, no more big playthrough but little ones, dragons will be like cliff binders, shouts will be overpowering and annoying to use, to dumbed down so will be more like a 1st person hack and slash game then any other tes.

but stil it will be the best game of 2011.

Wow. Finally a decent Poll worth responding to.
Thanks! :)

That's how we Dunmer do it. No messing around.

I have to disagree there.
Morrowind felt big because it was carefully planned to have diverse environments, landscapes and architecture. Oblivion felt much more generic no matter where you went.

Yeah. I just went back and played Morrowind today and you're absolutly right. The diversity of the landscape and how it is so much different to the real world made it seem big and wonderful.

But anyway, thanks to everyone that voted/commented I never thought this topic would be such a big hit. :)
We'll reach the 200-post limit in no time at all!

I haven't played Arena or Daggerfall because I missed them when they came out and at the time Morrowind came out Daggerfall felt far too outdated.

Morrowind was the best game ever created until Oblivion came out. Oblivion is the pinnacle of gaming :celebration: and personally I don't think any game will top it ever. If Skyrim is even half as good as Oblivion I'll be an extremely happy man.

I've played all of the ones listed except Daggerfall (gonna work on that after I get through Morrowind)

My current favorite is Oblivion with OOO installed to keep things interesting. Morrowind is really good so far, but it's kinda slow in terms of quests. Oblivion did the quests much better, in terms of keeping them interesting. However Morrowind's dungeon crawling is more rewarding than (vanilla) Oblivion's.

Arena, I couldn't get through the first dungeon. I did have a lot of fun designing a character though.

1) All of them
2) Morrowind and Oblivion
3) Don't care, just as long as it's the best
4) Toss up between the innate world of Morrowind, and the vast amount of mod quests for OB.

Also, thank you King Hlaalu Helseth for breaking the vast amount of pessimistic threads going around. It's nice to have a fun poll like this.

I played about 10 minutes of Arena and DOSBox was too slow for me so I stopped, so I don't count that.

I played Oblivion for about 125-140 hours (I don't remember exactly). I haven't finished the main quest or entered the Shivering Islands yet. Most of that was just having fun exploring, harvesting alchemy stuff, making potions/poisons, etc. I finished the Thieves, Fighters, and Mages Guilds as well as the Arena. I have no intention of ever doing the Dark Brotherhood quests. I have zero murders, and used the console "kill" command to avoid the "you are stuck here forever if you don't murder" issue with the Arena's last quest. I am close to finishing the main quest though. I will before Skyrim comes out.

I played 5-15 hours of Morrowind (I don't remember which). I spent a significant amount of time trying (and largely failing) to raise my magical skill. I had fun but lost interest for some reason, I don't recall why exactly. It might have been another game coming out or something. I played Morrowind after Oblivion and starting out it felt so much more clunky to me. I did enjoy what I played, but it just plain didn't svck me in like Oblivion did. When I started playing Oblivion I spent hours doing nothing but talking to people and exploring the Imperial City. Maybe I'll play Morrowind more before Skyrim. I'll have to work up the drive to do so though since I never did get the hang of its combat.

Oblivion is one of my favorite games of all time but I still enjoyed Morrowind.

What ES Games have you played? And how do you think they'll compare?

Which Elder Scrolls games have you played?

  • Arena: very little.
  • Daggerfall: quite a bit.
  • Morrowind: quite a lot.
  • Oblivion: quite a lot.

Which games have you finished? (Main Quest)
  • Arena: no.
  • Daggerfall: no.
  • Morrowind: yes.
  • Oblivion: no.

I think that Skyrim will be better than...
  • Arena: yes.
  • Daggerfall: yes.
  • Morrowind: hope so.
  • Oblivion: yes.

I think that the best Elder Scrolls game so far is...
  • Arena: no.
  • Daggerfall: no.
  • Morrowind: yes.
  • Oblivion: no.

Played them all except arena. Completed Oblivion.

I have to disagree there.
Morrowind felt big because it was carefully planned to have diverse environments, landscapes and architecture. Oblivion felt much more generic no matter where you went.[/qoute]

This does not make any sense. Diversity and Uniqueness are awesomely irrelevant to the feel of how big a place is.

Why not?

Let's say you are in an environment and wherever you go is the same, and another environment that changes quite a bit as you move around in that place. What environment would feel bigger?

Also:

Morrowind had smaller land size than Oblivion, so why did it feel bigger.

  • Fog and mountains: You did not see from one end of the world to the other end in one glance.
  • No fast travel: You had to plan the routes, and travel by following travel routes, instead of jumping instantly to the other end of the map.
  • Hidden uncharted map: You started off with a blank map that did not show anything until you discovered it yourself.
  • Slower game mechanism for events and encounters that let you look around and take in the scenery. In Oblivion you jumped from one hasty action to another.

Provide these parameters for Skyrim and the game will seem huge.

I've played and finished all the Elder Scrolls games except the 'Travels" games. I have no doubts that Skyrim will be better than all of them.

Played all but Arena.

Overall
1. Morrowind
2. Oblivion
3. Daggerfall

If I could some how played Daggerfall on a console it would move up. Graphic aren’t that important to me, so the concept of Daggerfall was my favorite, it was the game play on my PC that I couldn’t get into.

Morrowind system was best, i.e. inventory, armor, enchanting, exploration rewards……

Oblivion was the best game play

I hope Skyrim will be the best one yet.

I just don’t believe it will be the best one yet.

Daggerfall was my first elder scrolls so I do have biased towards it.

I'm curious to know if players tend to like the first RPG in the series they played. I know thats true for me. Morrowind is still my favourite, and while I went back and played daggerfall and found its scope really impressive, it was just too unfocused and flawed for me.

I played Daggerfall for years. I think I only stopped because I changed computers and it got difficult to figure out how to get it run. And I've got to admit that a lot of the factions were identical, just with different names. And there were a lot of quests, but again, they were mostly just randomly generated with different names. (Escort John Doe to the Red Shingle Inn in Raccoon Bottom. Now go escort Jane Smith to the Blue Possom in Dragon Dip.)

I'm still playing Morrowind, and I keep running into new stuff. The quests are all unique, though the "escort me to this pilgrimage location" ones are boring. For some reason the Guild Questlines aren't really interesting to me and I don't usually do any more than I have to to get the training and spells I want in them.

I play Oblivion occasionally, but it gets old pretty quickly. I like the idea of clear story lines on the various guilds, but I don't like how linear they are. You have no chance to vary the outcome. Some quests are brilliant in that they do have variations: Glarthir's for instance, your choices do make a difference in what happens there. I wish they'd done that on the Guild quests.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Skyrim to combine the good parts of all these games.

I played Oblivion first, but Morrowind is my favorite.

I think Skyrim will be better than Oblivion. I think there is no such thing as "better than Morrowind"... it is like the imaginary number j, no example of it exists in the real world. Morrowind resides high atop the RPG Pantheon. That said, Skyrim could still achieve a place in that Pantheon too.

I have played them all. Including Redguard and Battlespire. The only elder scrolls game I haven't played is the cell phone games. I still have the original boxed copies of all the games, as well. I got Arena for Christmas in 1994 and have been hooked on the Elder Scrolls since.
My favorite so far was Daggerfall followed closely by Morrowind. Daggerfall was utterly mindblowing in 1996.

I'll try to sum up my first Daggerfall "oh my god" moment. Bear in mind, this was 1996 and nothing like this was ever done before.

  • Explore dungeon, fight a creature. Oh cool, the creature is a werewolf. Continue exploring dungeon and go rest once I'm back in a town.
  • Weird out-of-nowhere dream sequence.
  • You are now a werewolf.
  • Holy crap!! This is AWESOME!
  • Ravage a village
  • You are now being hunted by werewolf hunters.

So unbelievably cool.

I've played them all but never completed Arena, it was a bit before my time. Morrowind was my favorite, it had the best world, lore, story and design if you ask me. I found Oblivion to be too simplified and generic, and the writing to be much worse.

I am optimistic that Skyrim will be better than Oblivion because Fallout 3 repaired a lot of Oblivion's issues. I do not expect it to be as good as Morrowind or Daggerfall though, as it is still being made for a mainstream crowd on the Xbox.

Wow, only 25% of people think Skyrim will be better than Arena! What!? Perhaps people just ingnored the question or maybe they did not understand the question. Some of the 75% that think Arena is going to be better or as good as Skyrim explain.

And Morrowind seem larger because you could not walk in a straight line anywhere, like In Oblivion. Gothic 3 Enchanced Edition did the same thing, so did Risen which had a very small open world yet, did not feel as small because of the lack of straight lines you had to take roundabout routes everywere.

its seems pretty obvious so far that better graphics is not a sufficient substitute for smaller maps, less weapons and skills
