The only Elder Scrolls game I've played is Oblivion.

Skyrim is looking like it's going to be a fantastic game, but I really want to have a better understanding of the ES universe before its release.

So what games do you suggest I should really play? Would Morrowind and Oblivion be enough? Should I play all of them/as many as I can get my hands on? Or just the recent ones?

I'm currently playing Morrowind and loving it, just try it , it's a long game and will give you a better understanding of the series.

Yeah, do Morrowind first. If that doesn't scare you off, you might even enjoy the first two!
