What games should I buy?

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 4:53 pm

Ok, so Dragon Age 2 is coming out soon and I have the signature edition reserved. Well I'm getting my paycheck sometime this week or next week and was going to set aside some money to get a few more games with DA:2. I'll say a little bit about each game I'm thinking about getting so you guys could clear up some questions on them as well as telling me what you think.

1. I've been interested in FO:NV for a while but I wasn't really impressed with FO:3. I've heard a lot of good things about NV though so I'm contemplating whether or not it's worth the money. How much of an improvement is it on FO:3?

2.I played the online multi-player beta for Killzone 3 and it seemed like a pretty good game. However I've never played any of the other Killzone games and I'm a little skeptical about buying it and then having it not be what I expected. I don't want it to turn into an FPS that I beat in a few days and never pick up again.

3.RDR is kinda in the same situation as Killzone, I don't know if its going to turn out to be what I expected. How deep is the immersion factor for RDR?

4. Just got done watching the X-Play review for TW:2, it seemed like it was alright but lacking in some areas, especially combat. However it still got a 3/5 which isn't too terribly bad. So what's your opinion on TW:2?

5. The answer is quite self explanatory, I've been wanting to play a game from the Gothic series for a while but my PC can't handle Gothic 3. I'll definitely end up buying it but should I just save my money and buy it when it releases or spend the money on another game and save up more for Gothic 4?

6. Same as number 5

7. Is there any game that I missed that is a must have for an RPG lover? (I already have Mass Effect 2, Oblivion, Dragon Age: Origins & Awakening, and Final Fantasy XIII)

That depends entirely on what you didn't like about FO3. There are some pretty big differences between the game, but the overal gameplay is much alike.

If you liked Dragon Age you could have a look at the Baldur's Gate series, of which Dragon Age is a spiritual succesor. They're pretty old so the graphics aren't anything like that of Dragon Age but they're great games. And they're cheap, so you get a lot of gameplay hours for your buck. :D

And the FPS/RPG Deus Ex is a classic too.

The main thing I didn't like about FO:3 was it not being open ended and the fact that it didn't seem very alive to me.....well for a post apocalyptic wasteland that is :P

When I first got it I thought it was pretty awesome but then after a while it got boring, kinda like Oblivion did.

I had a lot of fun with 'Red Dead Redemption.' Great game.

I still play "Diablo II" all the time. It's a classic, especially if you like killing enemies for 10 hours just to find a new sword. :D
(and 'Diablo III' comes out next year!)

And the FPS/RPG Deus Ex is a classic too.

This!

Yes it is. If you get GOTY, or at least install "Broken Steel" expansion.

(Forgot to include this in my first post)

Yeah I heard it was pretty awesome, was thinking about buying Dues Ex: Human Revolution. What's the storyline like?

A PC upgrade & a copy of The Witcher.

You have no idea how much I want to play that, every time I get on Steam I look at it and keep wishing the minimum spec. requirements would drop down haha :P

Diablo is 3rd person dungeon crawler right?

Yes it is. If you get GOTY, or at least install "Broken Steel" expansion.

I had beaten and sold it before Broken Steel or the GOTY edition had come out :P

I actually thought about buying the GOTY edition just to see how good the DLC was.

RDR is a fantastic game. One of the best I've played this generation.

F: NV is great, but if you weren't a fan of FO3, well, NV is practically the same game.

Yeah that's what I was afraid of, however I might pick it up anyways and see if my tastes have changed and I was just being overly critical of FO:3

Btw I love your avatar, I read the first 2 books and stopped during the 3rd right after they kill Shardic or whatever the big bears name is. Hopefully I'll pick it back up one day.

RDR is a fantastic game. Great story, and a wonderful lead character. I highly recommend it. Another suggestion is the first Mass Effect game.

i enjoyed new vegas after not being able to get into fallout 3, although it was more free-roaming i was doing, and not so much the main story, but the hardcoe mode feature is cool if you're into that kind of thing

killzone 3, meh, got bored of the second one very quick, dont know much about the third tho,

red dead redemption, while the world is beautiful and open, and the horse riding and shooting are ace, there was nowhere near enough customization for me, even getting a change of clothes is difficult to organise, and i just couldnt get into it, it didn't seem very open to players being evil or anything, it had that gta mechanic where the cops just keep coming and coming nomatter how many you shoot, but if you don't mind going along with the story in a quest after quest way then it's probably a good choice,

i'm gonna try two worlds 2 myself, because it's sandbox, but obviously i am a bit sceptical, reviews are very mixed,

the demo of gothic 4 was pretty dire,

portal 2 i would probably play, the first was good fun, but i'm not sure if i'd buy it, dunno how big the new one is, the first one i finished in like a day,

if you're looking for a good rpg i recommend Risen, a good orginal open world, and some good mechanics, particularly to do with threat and combat

If you didn't like FO3 it's doubtful that you'd like FONV as it's very similar.

If you want a long single player campaign, don't buy Killzone 3. It is a great multiplayer game though. I've been having a lot of fun with it over the last two days.

3.RDR is kinda in the same situation as Killzone, I don't know if its going to turn out to be what I expected. How deep is the immersion factor for RDR?

I think the immersion factor is very good in RDR. It's such a well crafted world that it's easy to just get svcked in. It's also a fairly lengthy game too with lots of stuff to keep you occupied. Well worth a buy.

Game Informer says that Two Worlds II is vastly improved from the original. I myself might give it a try to hold myself over until Skyrim comes out.

Out of your list Id go with FO:NV depending on who you ask its either a vast improvement or a step back. Personally, after playing through it a couple times, I wish I woulda kept FO3.

RDR is not worth buying, rent it.

Other than that, Id wait for Brink

Personally, I think you should get New Vegas and either Metro 2033 or a title from the stalker series. Though maybe my list is too similar in a way. Nah, I'm standing by those choices.

Don't even bother with Arcania. I wouldn't even call it a Gothic game at all apart from the few connections to the other games. Hell, I'd barely call it an RPG.

You don't need any of those. Just wait for Skyrim and you're set.

I voted for Read Dead Redemption. It's awesome I just bought it last week and it is soooo good. Much, much better than GTA4. Its so good it actually made me put down Halo: Reach, which I have played pretty much non-stop since its release date.

the original Deus Ex is 5 - 10 dollars, very good cyber punk rpg.
DX:HR comes out, hopefully soon. sort of has a Blade Runner look. you can choose different ways to complete missions, including going all stealth and avoiding much (if not all) of the combat.
