What games should influence Skyrim?

Post » Thu Sep 09, 2010 1:12 pm

If you can go anywhere from the beginning and have not to develop you character in order to survive in a place that would be called "higher level", like Oblivion, then one important aspect of RPGs is lost for you, and that is "Character development".

IMHO the game MM7 was the epitome of role playing games in this aspect.

Edit, by the way all those different levels of difficulty should not be on the surface, and we can have extremely high level dungeons, that reside in relatively high level surface areas, and the farther you go into that dungeon, the higher the danger and loot level should become, so that when we see that it is getting too hard for us, we can retreat to the surface areas, to regroup.

Yeah thinking on it i agree with you there about the different level zones definitely, we'll chalk that statement by me earlier up to a momentary lapse in thinking

fluid design, fluid animations, and fluid gameplay of BioShock (game is very smooth, overall, and Skyrim could benefit from taking notes on that; I'd also love BioShock's great water effects to have an influence on Skyrim)

leveling and level-scaling system of Fallout 3 (already known to be an influence)

proper optimation for all three platforms of RAGE

I forgot something

Graphically: the witcher 2.

After watching a bunch of witcher 2 videos and looking at the screens, THEN realizing it's probably going to be the same or around the same scale of skyrim just paced differently i then came to look at the Skyrim SS/vids and...slightly dissapoint.

The Witcher 2 certainly looks stunning. Correct me if i'm wrong though, but I doubt it'll be the same size as Skyrim. I also doubt it'll be quite as open as Elder Scrolls games are. I haven't followed a great deal of pre-release info about the Witcher 2, but what I have seen looks a lot more linear than an Elder Scrolls game. Lots of paths, etc. Fair enough you can wander off from those paths and explore, but you can do that in Fable games also. And lets not forget what The Witcher 1 was like with the loading screens...

Stick to the rules:
You can't say nothing
Needs to be a non-Elder Scrolls game.
Simples.

Deus Ex and Hitman in terms of tactical approaches to quests. I want my actions to have as much, if not more, influence than my words. For example, rather than picking a choice from a list of all possible choices while in dialogue with NPC A, let me tell NPC A whatever I feel is tactically the best answer at that point while still leaving my options open further down the road.

Mounts and combat: Shadow of the Colossus, it was EPIC and PERFECT!!!

Storyline: Bioshock - the first one. The storyline was great and every character played its roll perfectly.

Melee Combat: Devil May Cry.

Shaders and lighting: Crysis and/or Battlefield 3.

Climbing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or9IQOtt4ho + Assassin's Creed (but a milder version for Skyrim).

Im not the one making Skyrim so I dont think I can talk about games that "should" influence it. One is influenced by what one is influenced...

TES games should influence Skyrim and that's it.

Exactly. Many features from game to game are incongruous (each game pretty much stands on it's own) and can be a source for great additions in future games. Daggerfall's banking, climbing. Morrowind's political intrigue and world design, weapon and armor variety, etc.

My only choice outside of TES is Arx Fatalis. Great atmosphere, magic system, cooking, humor, awesome puzzles.

I did like the sound design and art direction that cultivated a chilling atmosphere in Amnesia: the Dark Descent.

I hope there are a couple of Skyrim dungeons with a scary ambiance.

And this.

Which rules? The ones made by the thread starter to try and bias the thread into only discussing the options they like? :meh: on those.

Thats the point of the thread though. I find it odd that you think SR should be made in an TES vacuum.

SR is already taking ideas I like from other games, specifically Gothic 3 Enhanced Edition. G3 had running rivers, big watersfalls, huge cliffs lots of passive/neutral wildlife, people spending there time working(mining, sawing wood, etc). All those atomosperic elements are going to be in SR and I am very please to here that.

Unbelievable sense of character progression from "Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor"

Any time I felt I'm the master of the land, I would find another place that I felt like a newbie there and had to develop my group even more to be able to survive there.

And this can be achieved by doing this:

Any small increase in a skill should have a significant and visible effect on the effectiveness of that skill, so when you advance your one handed skill from 6 to 7, you should suddenly feel that you can kill those rats a lot easier.

This is one of the reason I like perks so much. With 1-100 range for skills it just was not very exciting upping them. Since it was only a 1% increase in power. But with a perk the difference in noticeable right away.

Rope Bow from Dark Messiah to replace levitation
Breakdown's cutscenes (all done in first person)
Borderlands style loot (random loot with appearance and stat differences, for basic loot only, still have set legendary gear)

isn't it a little late to ask what games should influence Skyrim when it's already nearing the final stages of development?
