What is going to be your Skyrim Setup?

Post » Wed Jan 13, 2010 8:13 pm

I'd say stay away from laptops for heavy gaming. Too many problems with keeping them cool. With $700 you can get a fairly high end gaming desktop, as apposed to paying $1500+ for a laptop with the same specs.

Thanks for the advice, was just wondering if a new laptop could be better than my 2 yr old PC to run Skyrim. I'mprimarily getting it to take notes and do basic work on for college, so I'll probably just stick with my current desktop for Skyrim and get around a $500 laptop for school stuff.

Well if you're just needing something to take notes with, use the old pen and paper ;D and put that money to new hardware.

Notes? Get a digital recorder. Or get a flip camcorder and record your daily lessons.

My big screen tv, my 360, comfy office chair, no natural sunlight, and probably an ungodly amount of mountain dew and instant noodles (varieties of both kinds).

I'm thinking about getting a laptop soon for $700 or less and if its possible to get a better laptop to run Skyrim with then my current computer for that price, I'll do so. Oblivion runs great on my current computer, even with 200+ mods.

The total cost works out to be much cheaper if you build a new gaming desktop from components + buy a cheap non-gaming laptop.

gaming laptops are generally significantly more expensive and are never going to be as powerful as the high end desktops.

If you must buy a gaming laptop for portability reasons, I'd suggest taking a look at some of the models on http://www.xoticpc.com to get an idea of the pricing. Ideally you would want to go with something with display resolution at least 1600x900 or 1920x1080 and a 1 GB DX11 video card, either NVIDIA 460M or AMD 5830M (or better). The Sagers are a little bit better value (as in lower pricing), but most of them are pretty bulky and not convenient to carry around with you everywhere.

Just ordered a new iMac 27 inch. Going to install a small Windows 7 partition just for Skyrim  Don't hate.

iMac 27 inch
3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
2TB Serial ATA Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

EDIT: Going to add two 4GB sticks of RAM for a total 12GB when it arrives later this week/early next week.

Eh the only thing I would change is my gpu and a heatsink so I can overclock my 2.4GHz quad core to closer to 3. Still though.. 52000k a year is significantly more than I can expect to make in a year. Heres to hoping I won't need anything expensive until Skyrim comes out. lol.

I will say my gpu isn't that bad. 8800gts (so pretty dated, but it gets the job done).

Lol yea it wouldnt be bad cept for taxes and the fact that im puttin the ol lady through her masters this and next year.

Still have my PC that I bought 3 years ago, or was it 4? I dont know, either way, its really overclocked though. Every game that comes runs smoothley on my 24" monitor on best graphics. Who the hell needs a rig that costs almost as much as a used car? There are no games coming out in the nearer future (this console cycle) that will need those specs, hell I could run Crysis 2 two on hardcoe without it lagging. But on the other hand Crysis 1 did have nicer graphics at some points.
E8400 Dualcore@3,6Ghz overclocked
8800GTS Alphadog, overclocked it even more than it already was, and yes I still use the good ol' 88 series.
2GB RAM, will probably buy two more if I fee the need
P34 Mainboard.

Put mine together less than a week ago, works like it's godlike! Runs just about everything i throw at it on max.

Cpu: I7-2600 3.4 Ghz
Gpu: Gtx 580 1580 mb
Motherboard: MSI p67a-gd65
Harddisk: 128 gb SSD at 270 mb/s. And another 2 TB harddisk at 7200 rpm
RAM: 8 gb 1333 mhz ddr3

Combine that with 24' at 1920 x 1080, windows 7 home premium 64bit.. I'm quite sure i'll be able to run skyrim on max and still mod the life out of it :D

ATI Radeon HD 5870 x2 dual (crossfire mode)
Windows 7 64 bit
i7 940 @ 2.93 GHz
6 GB RAM

Why put the rest? This computer was built to run everything on max setting for the next couple of years.

Condescending remark towards consoles.

Now I post my over-the-top PC specs to stroke my epeen.

Now I say that I'm gonna run Skyrim on a 4 year old computer on Max graphics.

And I say that posting anything like this again earns a warning and a nice long few day long time out.

Really. Flame-baiting, platform bashing, spam, and trolling are not good ideas, m'kay?

I'll be playing on an Xbox slim with a 40'' Bravia 1080p and and a Turtle Beach X11 headset. Of course this could change if I go through with my plans to build a gaming pc.

Holy Lord..is ANYONE here a college student? Where do you find a spare $9mil to drop on a gaming rig? 0_0

Haha!! I'm in my first year at university, so money is really tight. I'm really doubting that I'll be able to run Skyrim on the PC I have now! Probably gonna get a job over the summer and buy a new one. Won't be getting anything as good as some listed here though, unless I can find some decent prices!!
