What's a good level to start Thieves Guild quest line?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 3:44 pm

I'm currently a lvl 12 Breton. I know I could jump into it now but I'm asking just incase there are weapons or armor that would be better to get in later levels when they are at their best.

Level forty-something is best, but that's only for one particular (one-handed) weapon. To be honest, I wouldn't hold off - its quite a good questline!

Sounds good. I'm off to meet a man about a horse, err, unusual gem.

eh... doesn't really matter.
if you have gold there is some good trainers in there for thiefy skills anyways
plus there is a training room that you can break lockpicks in and level that up a bit.

I'm not really worried about lockpicks. I haven't put any perk points into this character or my first one. I guess I'm playing more of an assassin character? I'm not really so familiar with all of the character terminology nor do really stick to the archetypal builds. I'm a build-as-you-go kinda guy. Regardless, thanks for the tips, dude!

You don't need to bother with lock picks and skill as I think any character hitting level 50+ will have a lockpick skill of 85+ simply by exploring dungeons.

Exactly. Level 46, to be exact. You'll get the two best one handed swords in the game and the best bow.

Oh, BTW, the lockpicking ability is useful only a handful of time. In fact you can gimp yourself to play with a character that can open locks only through the tower stone ability and still complete the thieves guild questline. Sneak is essential (especially in the first two missions, the others can be resolved through sheer violence).

Well, there's a dilemma.. there's a long way to 46 from here. Bah..Grey Fox reincarnate, a.s.a.p!

(I could at least start it now, yeah? Just to get some sweet TG armor? and NOT go after the swords, bow, other neat swag just yet?)

I did the TG quest at around level 65+. If I had it to do all over again, I would have jumped into the TG just as fast as I could run from Helgen to Riften. There are many great opportunities for loot and cash and once you open up the fences, earning money gets much, much easier. The rewards are meh for high level characters but significant for low level ones.

From the start village I went straight to Riften, like skooma_fiend says. I saw the path to Riverwood in so many videos that I knew I wanted to start somewhere else. So I basically started the thieves at about level 2 or 3 and I have no regrets, that's the beauty of open world. I couldn't care less about their rewards, this game gives you a lot of ways to get good gear and goodness knows I'm so powerful with vendor gear only that I don't even remember last time I used a shout.

The previous posts basically sums up why u should do thieves guild quest asap.
If u need money. Thieves Guild. Although it doesnt involve much thieving as compared to oblivion, its a good questline.

Yeah, I'm in the guild now. I don't really care for the money. I've got a house, my mead, and my health. I just want to see cool stuff and slay dragons with arrows.

You get the armor after the first mission, if I remember correctly. A decent armor, that's all. The real good rewards will arrive later. In the meantime, you can suspend the main quest line and concentrate on some side quests to restore the guild influence and gain some money in the process.

If you don't care about leveled loot then any time I suppose. I did it pretty much off the bat to pretend I started there instead of the usual Whiterun.

Speak for yourself. My level 26 thief had a hell of a dungeon recently in the quest-line.

I cracked under the pressure and went to Wiki. Some weapons seem like they will be ones that I would use for a long time (MOST POWERFUL SWORD IN THE GAME  !!) so maybe I will wait until level 46... .. .

My Dark Elf went in about LV21-22? I just got the Nightingale Blade, with a base DMG of 19. 10 Absorb, 10 other.

But I know if you get it 46+ it's beast. I just did that with my LVL50 Nord went into Riftweald Manor and got Chillrend. Then held it up next to a Daedric Sword, and it's stronger by 3 points exactly. (75 Chillrend, 72 Daedric Sword)

Fits this character perfectly as well might I add. But really any level. Hell, my dude ALWAYS goes in the Brotherhood like LVLs 1-2.. I don't get why cause I tried telling him the higher LVL you are the more money for contracts, AND, better loot (esp. if you play on Expert). He only likes Adept. There's no getting it through to him lol.

Not really. There are no unique weapons in the game as powerful as the ones you can make yourself. And if you consider the enchantments of the weapon you are referring to:
Spoiler
Chillrend is enchanted with frost, which many creatures in Skyrim are resistant to

I heard that the level 46 version of one of those swords could not be smithed so the level 36 version of that sword may be better if you are into smithing, unless that bug has been fixed.

There is also a good suit of armor that you have to be level 32 to get the best version.

Here is a link to the UESP page with all the Skyrim levelled loot and what level you need to be to get the best version: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Leveled_Items

Any level is good but if you want the best versions of the items, 46 would be the best bet for Chillrend and level 32 for the armor.

The difference in Chillrend's damage is minuscule. I certainly wouldn't put the Thieve's Guild questline off because of the leveling.
