What got you started?

Started with fallout 2 actually, then later got the dual Fallout 1 and 2 case. shortly after the release of fallout 2 IIRC on the late 90's.

Saw a very early video I think it was E3 coverage where the game had just been announced and watched them play for several minutes and thought the game sounded amazing, but not owning a current gen console I forgot about it, then I saw some more stuff about 6 months before release and had my ps3 so I figured maybe I'd check it out did a little research found fallout 1 & 2 there were cheap so I went for em loved them picked up 3 different but loved it too, then new vegas came along with Obsidion and I had to have it.

Just curious why and when people got into Fallout.

For me it was 2009. Saw a friends' dad playing it. Thought it was the most ridiculous looking game ever. From the pip-boy icons, to the fact that I watched him sell baseballs and empty bottles for 5.56 ammo from a guy wearing overalls and a motorcycle helmet.
The week after I got it and couldn't stop playing it.

When I first saw F3 at E3

I've posted this before, so here's the short version:

I started playing PnP RPGs way back with Steve Jackson's Metagames when I was a wee tyke. I played a whole bunch of different games, ran campaigns, did pretty much everything all us RPGers did back then. Painted lead figures, collected massive amounts of game materiel, etc. I grew up, had some kids, got married and turned into a responsible contributing member of society, ie. I no longer had time for gaming. My last gaming group was when i lived on Cape Cod, MA back around 15 years ago. As computer games got better, I found myself playing shooters and other kinds of games, but not CRPGs. I just never got into the genre. It was too different from sitting around a table, drinking beer and talking in funny accents. One day, my oldest son, an avid X-box gamer was playing a game I hadn't seen yet. It looked like some wierd kind of shooter. It was FO3. First chance I got when he wasn't home, I stole onto his x-box and tried it out. Holy Crap! It was a RPG! And it was a hole helluva lot closer to the old table top games than anything I'd ever seen before and it had a 1st person perspective like I was used to from my shooters.

Obviously, I was hooked. I even bought the older games and gave them a whirl, sadly, I just couldn't reconcile myself to the interface. I just enjoy first person much more. But I do wish the games would strengthen the RPG aspects. My ideal would be a game with a first person perspective that gives me the same kind of feel that the old table top games did. Just not turn based. If I want turn based, I'll pull out the old books, maps and figures and have myself a real game. Now if I could just find someone to game with down here.

@ Mr Enclave and Martyr, you know I figured two guys as knowledgeable as you two would have been old school fans of the series instead of new comers who played the originals after getting Fallout 3 like me.

Yep, that's why I'm more defensive of Fallout 3 than some. I'd say in terms of lore defending, Lt. Andronicus is the only other user I know of offhand who equally defends F3's lore as much as F1,2, and Tactics.

I actually went in blind, in 2007-2008 Fallout 3 was already out, but I thought the name sounded dumb so I didnt bother reading about it, but a friend was really into Fallout 3 and said I should play it, so I bought Fallout 3 as a birthday gift for myself, then spent two years in love until the GOTY came out, when I found this place, I found out about the Wiki, then found the older ones and bought that. I fell in love with the lore, the series, the odd quirky dialogue in places, It's my favorite series of games, especially now with New Vegas adding Mr. House

I saw a small preview of the Fallout demo (in 97) in a local games mag and got interested. Unfortunately, I couldn't get my hands on it or Fallout when it eventually came, so it was kinda left at the background until about a year later (98), when I saw my friend playing Fallout 2 and instantly went on and bought it off from him.

Just doing my duty sah. B)

I came in with Fallout 3 ( and its probably my favorite game in the series) so I feel the need to defend it when I can. Still though, I went back and played the originals (unfortunately not tactics yet though) and love them as well too.

Yeah, that's why he's only a Lieutenant ;). To be fair though, I would rag on Fallout 2 - my favourite - as much as Fallout 3 for it's eqaully as stupid matters concerning my Enclave.

Bethesda won't "learn" anything from these forums, and rightfully so.
What the Dinosaurs here don't seem to realize is that they are in the minority, go take a stroll through some other places that talk about Fallout, YouTube or Gamespot for instance.
Bethesda will stick to their formula for FO4, keep some of the minor improvements NV made with weapon modding and such, and they will reek in the dough from it.
Because in the end, it doesn't matter what a few loud mouthed whiners on an internet forum think, in the end, all that matters is this:

http://fallout.gamesas.com/eng/links/fallout3-awards.php

You're completely forgetting the big picture here. Either buckle down and accept the series will never be what you want it to be, or stop complaining about every little thing that happens. We couldn't even get through the Old World Blues Qore preview thread yesterday without you pouting about something. It's getting tiring.
I really have no desire to be rude, but I am just beyond sick of people complaining...it's old..

Well said!

Indeed. Nothings ever gonna change, so instead of criticising why won't we just praise and adore. I love the taste of bulls**t and lies in my mouth. :P

Friend kept rambling about some "cool Fallout 2 game which takes place after a war" and such. After a week or so I decided to give it a try and enjoyed it. Temple of trials ftw.

To Carolina, and I suppose anyone else, we are all entitled to our opinions and we will discuss those opinions about this series on the discussion board for this series if we want to. If you don't like anybody's complaining, get over it. This is the nature of a forum and it is not going to change to your liking just as Fallout isn't going to change to, well, anyone's liking.

Nah, I'll still complain and at the end of the day I'll just svck it up and play it even if it was another Brotherhood of Steel clone(very unlikely).
That being said, you make a valid point: Forums be there for discussing and arguing and no amount of Vanguards will change it. :hubbahubba:

Well Fallout was a Christmas gift from the Wife, and it sat on a shelf for nine months while I was out to sea on deployment. When I got back I ran it and loved it.

I started in mid 2009 with Fallout 3. I had played Oblivion for several consecutive months in late 2008 and early 2009 and was looking for another Bethesda game. After some reluctance due to my unfamiliarity and dislike of any game with guns and first-person views in it, I got Fallout 3 because I knew it wasn't a shooter or the latest Call of Duty game and I knew I would get some fun exploration and character progression out of it.

I saw an awesome looking metal-man on the cover of a Gameinformer magazine, saw that it was called 'Fallout 3' (At that time I already loved the idea of post-nuclear apocalypse scenarios), read up about it and was immediately excited. The best part of it was, when I read the Gameinformer preview, I was like "This game better be coming out soon!" so I looked over to the release date and saw that it was scheduled to come out October 28th. At that time it was late November. I rushed out to Gamestop, picked up the game, played it for God knows how long, and since then I've been hooked on Fallout.
