Asssuming the ANZUS treaty as a) Signed and b) still in force, Australia would have been drawn into the Chineese conflict.

ANZUS was signed in 1951, so is very likely present in Fallout's world.

Australia also has inteligence gathering obligations for Southern China under the UK-USA Security agreement (or Quadripartite Pact, if you're familiar with the "Echelon" system, this is it), although given that Canada is also a member of this, it may or may not have been suspended.

A lot of people ive met overseas have no idea where australia is, so hey maybe they forgot to nuke it.
From a fallout sense i dont think footy obsessed mutants would work too well with the established canon.
