No domesticated cats remain according to official explanation, because they were eaten.

Mutated wild cats probably still exist.

Cats taste too good to not be eaten, hence no cats.
But I think that mountain lions and stuff like that still exist.
But the tame one's? Nope, all of them became yum yum before they had the chance to flee into the wild.

Think about it, with like 90% of the population killed in a nuclear holocaust, all those pet cats and dogs are on their own. Which will survive better on their own, a pack of wild dogs or a bunch of loner cats. Domestic cats just aren't suited to live without humans anymore, this is the same reason why all the dogs in the wasteland are pitbulls or pastorals, and not chihuahuas and poodles.

There's no way a generation of cats can survive in a post-nuclear wasteland. While cats are only good for companionship and catching mice, dogs can track scents and can bite people and animals to death.

Cats arent good for survival without humans, what a load of rubbish, just in the state i live domesticated cats turned feral are a huge nuisance many people dont look after their cats and just let them roam free alot become feral and will kill any wildlife to survive, so domesticated cats would easily turn feral and survive, this is a bit like the horse is extinct thread, i dont know if anyones noticed but the ncr flag has a 2 headed bear on it, anyone seen a 2 headed bear in any of the games, just because they didnt put something in a game doesnt mean it hasnt survived, game designers change their minds about alot of things, if theres a future game they may put something in that they havent put in other games, in new vegas we actually saw birds, in the past we just saw spots in the sky.

Hmm, so the humans ate most domesticated cats, say some escaped, would they be able to survive the radiation?

Isn't there something in the time line that states that all the Cats died before the great war because of a feline plague?

i know its not lore , but any one hear ever read the Horseclans novels ?

now they were real cats
the clan of the cat i mean

i mean telepathic genetically reenginnered sabre tooth tigers in a post apocolypic world allied with a human barbarian tribe

now that would be good prehaps finding the research lab or a wounded nurseing mother with a couple of small cubs (oops thats the plot of one of the books)

plus on a side note we all know cats are only living with humans until we human develop enough intelligence to invert a can opener that can be used by paws
as this clearly isnt going to happen in this game world the cats have left the building

whats the differance between cats and dogs .........easy dogs have owners ,cats have staff , as you can tell iam a cat person

We do seem to be working on it, most cans of pet food in the UK have "ring pull" openers.

It makes you feel any better cougers are likely still alive, and mutated into some ungodly creature that I am glad isnt in game. Cougers are bad enough as it is, dont need no radioactive/mutant ghoul ones.

While personally I think the idea was stupid, like the others have said domesticated cats are extinct in North America. I'm pretty sure the mountain lion did survive and there might be domesticated cats in other countries.

If you saw "The Book of Eli", they'd be a plentiful supply of protein the first decades after the bombs. In FO, they've likely been eaten to extinction for at least a century, whereas domesticated dogs remained loyal and useful like in "A Boy and His Dog", granted without the psychic powers.

Domesticated cats are quite capable of surviving in the wild. They are good at hunting. Think of all of the nice dead creatures they bring into your house.

Dogs are ill-equipped to live without people. Feral dogs scavenge for food, they don't hunt - even terriers that kill rats and such aren't really hunting - they're "playing." Dogs would only survive with our aide.

Curious why molerats (moles or rats?) yao guai (bears) and cazadores (moths?) and most inexplicably Brahmin (cows) have mutated into giant, or otherwise freakish organisms while cats and dogs have not.

Also, why weren't any Prewar animals preserved in a vault, like an ark? Seems logical. . .
