What happened to the 7000 steps?

Post » Wed Mar 27, 2013 8:23 pm

Pre release, Todd was asked about the 7000 steps and he said... “I have been promised 7000 steps, and I am going to count them. Our world artists are amazing.
We have just an amazing team, and they put so much detail in the world, so they didn’t blink when I said ‘it MUST HAVE 7,000 steps. When you look at all the stuff we have in the world, 7,000 steps obviously is not that hard.”

Wonder what happened? What happened to "must have" and it's "obviously not that hard" lol? As it stands, I believe there's 748 steps.

They probably had more important things to work on.

He said it was "obviously not hard" to implement and a "must have". Sounded pretty important to him.

I don't know. I don't really care. One time I tried counting them. I got to 23.

That's not to say it isn't an interesting question, I'm just saying it isn't too interesting to me.

Just because it isn't hard doesn't mean it's more important than what they were probably working on. Anyways, I can overcome the steps for the entirety of the game, which is great.

They're right there with the ability to mess with Skyrim's economy or sabotage a lumber mill and the rest of the things Todd promised.

That was probably until he realized that there were a crap ton other things to do that were much more "must have". It was a wish of his, which didn't really get granted I guess. Oh well.

Lol. Actually, I think if you attack a lumber mill, it won't work anymore.

lolradiantailol.

In all seriousness, there are large gaps on the path up to High Hrothgar, so we can assume there were once steps there that have been destroyed.

This is something I'll never understand about marketing speech. One thing is to promise a feature and later cut it due to budget/time constraints/unforeseen technical difficulties. Another one is to make empty speeches about something really minor and later pass for a complete liar.

I'm sure at the time that interview was released, they ought to knew that the steps were not 7000 but a few hundreds at most. Why not saying something like: "I cannot promise that the steps will be exactly 7000, but the whole ascent to the throat of the world will look gorgeous, trust me" (honest marketing speech with some hyperbole)?

I suppose it's 7000 for foxes or ants?

Or maybe if you walk slowly with the shortest character possible?

Not being funny. But what?

The game was riddled with bugs at release. Broken perks.Broken quests. Poor quests ( not all ). Poor guilds. Performance issues, and on and on and on. They lied about certain things to get people interested before release. The game was rushed and it shows in a lot of places. They have basically stripped away good things and added more eye candy and kill moves. Though skyrim looks beautiful at times,it also looks terrible in places. Oblivion looked better in certain areas. Especially on close objects like barrels, trees etc.

This post might seem harsh, but it's true.

They could have done so much better with this game. But the fat cats wanted their money as soon as possible,no matter the state of the game.

Could they have done better? Of course. But I don't know any game where the answer would be any different. Skyrim is one of the best games I've ever played. It has it's problems, but like I said, what game doesn't. Yeah, the bugs can be annoying sometimes. But I don't think it is as bad as you say it is. To each their own, I guess.

Maybe instead of "steps" [objects used to ascend/descend] he meant "steps" [the walking kind taken by someone to get from a to b].

Anyone up for counting the number of steps your character takes to get to the top? :D

EDIT: I'm talking walking strides. Don't run. Who'd run to the top of the Throat of the World in real life?
