what happened to the dwarves?

I′d love it if the dwemer had disappeared because Akatosh (Alduin) had deemed their creations dangerous for the world & that he had transported them all to an eternal hell on one of his own planes, and that we fight Alduin (Akatosh) in Skyrim causing him to lose his grip and the dwemer getting released from their eternal hell, traumatized so that they would go on a crusade to destroy all technology rather than build new (if you suffered hundreds of years of torture because your race tinkered a bit too much you′d want to make damn sure no one else was tinkering I′d say).

It would provide a good source for all of Nirn′s failing to advance technology to stem from, each time some break-through is about to happen some dwemer group attacks its creators and destroys the creation and all plans and evidence of its existence.

Running the risk of ripping off Fallout, I would love to see a Dwemer vault opening up at some point in TES chronology and having them gradually repopulate the series with each progressive game in the series.

They can make TES V a Barbie Horse Adventures crossover if the way to. Get my point?

Also, the Dwemer NPC singular in Morrowind was called the Last Living Dwemer.

Exactly. And now he's most likely dead with the destruction of Morrowind.

@Ellert, I think a better explanation of Nirn not becoming technologically advanced is A. People looking at what happened to the dwemer. B. Nirn does not abide by how our society is, was or will be. It is it's own place and does not have to follow the patterns of mankind.

They were written out of existence, they can also be written back into existence. Retcons happen all the time. If none could remain in Tamriel, would there be Dwemer NPCs in Morrowind?

It's easy to take the retcon route, because under the premise of a retcon, virtually anything and everything is on the table regardless of how sensible that object on the table actually is. With retcons, spells can be made into the expelled flatulence of netches, harvested and processed by their herders. Tamriel could be turned into modern-day New York, and the assumed digestion tract of the 10 races could be inverted for absolutely no reason. Etc, etc.

So to say that retcons happen all the time means virtually nothing in terms of arguing why there should or should not be Dwemer in the game.
Further, if a retcon is to be done successfully, it needs to be one that proves itself more interesting than whatever it is replacing. A good example of this might be the dwarves becoming the Dwemer in the first place. A bad example might be the Red-King-Once-Jungled. As a matter of personal taste, I find that the Dwemer have so much more stage presence when they are actually not on stage at all, so to speak.

Wow, we've gone beyond strawmen into the real of straw golems. The Dwemer were an exciting race of people with a rich history and I would love to see that expanded upon.

Well said.

And that can be done without them magically coming back into existence. I personally like them as a mystery. I don't want the Dwemer to become metechloreanized.

If you're assuming that my wish is to shuffle the dwemer off the stage altogether, you've misinterpreted. Their history and ways and culture has been and can still be explored, quite in depth actually. The only real difference between the Dwemer being alive and interactive versus them being dead and fragmented, is that they are two modes of telling virtually the same story. In fact, I'd argue having the actual Dwemer off the stage gives the player a larger sense of satisfaction as a result of the effort of piecing together the past and coming to an independent interpretive anolysis. Kind of like the question, "Did Vivec really kill Nerevar?" Depends on your interpretation of the facts and rumors and sources as gathered.

I wouldn't want them to be in every city, and agree that their elusive and mysterious nature should be kept intact. It would perhaps be most interesting if the remaining Dwemer were isolated from their past, and exist as researchers probing their lost cities for secrets in an attempt to preserve their racial memory. It would also be interesting (at least to me), if the remaining Dwemer the player came in contact with were instantly hostile, if for no other reason than a zealous desire to protect their vanishing history, giving the act of killing them off a tragic undercurrent. I'd also like to see the remaining Dwemer (should they be written into the series) hunted and driven off for this very reason, vilified by the general populace.

As long as Todd is aat the head of the beth team we wont ever know exsactly what happened to the dwemer...and we wont have them return.

Todd, like most ES lore fans, are quite proud that the ES dwarves are very different from any other fanasty dwarves and have an unsolved mystery about them. Dwarves wouldnt be half as interesting if they had just come out in morroiwnd and explained what they did nad what happened to them.

i would like the short little dwarves back. how cool would it be to be a dwarf. not to mention the armor and weapons you could build, they are the masters of smithing. they are also little balls of killing fury.

... :slap:

i wish there was a more violent animation for smacking someone...

...look, this isnt the lord of the rings, this is THE ELDER SCROLLS! *kicks you into a pit*

now, DWEMER were never the short angry guys who were extremely greedy... get that through your head, "dwarves" is just a misunderstanding by other races, more or less.

if you want to play as two foot tall angry men, go play a LotR game, but you're never going to get that in TES... NEVER! ...unless you're on PC, and you play a stupid mod.

sorry if i sound harsh, but this kinda stuff really irritates the hell out of me.

How about if they were cast into someplane of oblivion that someone screwed up a summoning spell and summoned the dwarves?

Well, it's almost guaranteed that we'll be seeing some Dwemer technology in Skyrim, as they've already revealed the Sphere Centurion make it's return in the Sounds of Skyrim (Video 1, 1:40)
To me this is one of the most exciting things about the Game Informer info so far. Updated Dwemer stuff will be so much fun.

The Dwemer were merely a plot instrument in Morrowind used to explain the existence of the Wraithguard. I do think that it was seminal how Bethesda avoided incorporating too many fantasy stereotypes into the game by making the Dwemer extinct, although it would have been interesting to meet Dwemer other than Bagarn.

Aha! It was so obvious, they made the dwemer up in Morrowind so that they could have history and an influence in Daggerfall later! Owait... Seriously check out that link on the first page its all good stuff people.
@Da Mage, Bosmer were tall in daggerfall >.> Bethesda is weird... I want to see the Bosmer from the lore, screw the boringly droll/dry stereotype they have been shoved into since Morrowind
