What happens if you don't defend a settlement?

Post » Sat Dec 12, 2015 12:19 am

I really don't want to have to travel around to each settlement every time they're attacked, nor do I want to waste time having to building defenses. If they want to be defended, then instead of scattering to multiple small "settlements," they should be populating one of the actual towns I keep clearing out. Ridiculous. Anyway, what happens when you don't go defend one when it's attacked? Also, If I store an item at one, but don't go defend it, will that item still be there?

The people inside die and they break all your stuff you built(generators, water wells ect). If you dont care about the settlement i dont see a big about it.

If you increase your defence rating you will never get attacked.

Ok, so will no more people settle there again unless I build a recruitment tower?

After they attacked me i went back everyone was dead but 1 person. I had to fix my recruitment tower and generator. You can still send people to any settlement if you click on them if you dont have a tower. (you might need the perks for this)

I just want people to stop settling. I don't like ignoring quests, but I really don' want to go defend them, either. Or, have to go to each one, and build any defenses. I just don't want people to show up.

Got to remember its just a side game you dont have to deal with it if you dont want too. You could put up defences on you main town and send everyone to it.

When you do defences they dont have to be real. Dont waste time making walls they dont work. Your stupif people just run out side and fight anyway. Just put up few gas turrents and you will never get attacked.

If you dont enjoy making the town or take the time to make them do stuff for you like getting purified water or caps from the stores, then i wouldnt even do it. Let them all die.

Corn is a big seller. Might be tedious for some but I can get about 200 caps in 15 min of hoarding corn from my 8 settlements. I like using my power armor for missions so I buy fusion cores often. One power armor is just for hoarding the corn. So defend your settlement if you want to make some easy caps. Let them do the work, keep them happy. I'm level 23 now with almost 10k caps.

How do you send ppl to other settlements? Whenever I interact with settlers I've never seen an option to send them somewhere, except for companions.

Highlight them in workshop, and select "move".

I only have 2 settlements that I have built something in and those never get's attacked. One is Hangman Alley though and by accident a super mutant patrol stumbled upon the settlement because one of my guards begun to shot at it.

The supermutants stormed the gate and one suicider managed to get in and detonate which more or less blow everything to dust including me.

I have a very high defence so I never get's attacked, so this was a pure coincidence. But funny none the less. :)

I have a high defense and Red Rocket Little Riften has not yet been attacked, thankfully. :)

I had an attack "quest" on sanctuary where i had almost 200 defence rating.. So doesn't seem heavy defences stops the risk of attack. Anyway, doesn't matter since they are completelt bugged for me. First of all it seems i cant complete the quest. I travell there and kill all the attackers but the quest doesn't complete and as time passes it'll be marked as failed and the auto destruction kicks in. Sometimes the attackers haven't spawned and there's no way of even trying to complete it even though it would probably be bugged anyway. One time i had the "synth" attack but the synths didn't attack, only the "disguised" synth settler went solo and attacked.

Have anyone had a successful attack quest'? If i want to complete it I have to reliad and deal with the attack before it appeard in the quest log, which is just a big nuisance...

Out of a few dozen settlement attacks only one failed on me while I was within the build limit when it finished. Leaving the build area at the wrong time seems to auto-fail them, though.

I am doing that, and either the option isn't there, or it says that person can't be relocated. I haven't been able to move a single person to another settlement yet, which is annoying as I want smaller settlements to merge in to bigger ones.

I wish there was more to do settlements. Settlers with names and personal stories, quests... And as far as I know if they are happy

Some settlers, particularly named ones, can't be moved. The original settlers with Preston can't be moved, for example.

If you don't want a settlement to grow, don't build anything there, and don't send anyone there.

If a settlement is full (charisma + 10) no more can be sent there, also some Settlers cannot be removed from their "home settlements" (Like the Abernathies at Abernathy Farm). Anything else...you may have a bug/glitch.

I have 5 "settlements", though I use the term loosely. They were given to me as side quests. Once I cleared the quest, they became a settlement. I will put a turret and a guard post, maybe restructure/build walls to "funnel" them to the turret, but after that, they're on their own.

The game's notification system is either bugged or decides to alert you whenever it feels like it. I've had 2 settlements raided, and I only know this because both "quests" failed (they're not really quests, imo). I didn't even see the message they were being attacked.

Now, the one settlement I do have an investment in is Sanctuary. Or rather, The New Fort Knox. My defense rating is over 120 and given how much time I've spent building there, I will defend it.

In time, I will eventually get to the other settlements, but for now, they're on the low priority list. So far, none of the named people have been killed, which tells me they're holding their own.

Dunno how far you are in, but named settlers can definitely be killed, so if you feel an attachment, give their gear and the settlement defense some love.

Re: Settlers dying-

I just defended the Castle against a horde of 5-6 supermutants, two with missile launchers, and their three mutant hounds. Had the two artillery pieces up and running, but that's such a slow and cumbersome process that it's hardly worth pursuing. ANYHOO, they approached along the narrow foot path from the South, and so I and a couple of my settlers took cover just inside the entryway there and fired on them as they approached in file (like dummies). The settler to my right fell to enemy fire (a missile, I believe). Not DEAD, but incapacitated like a companion would be. Got back up after the fight and went back to tending the mutfruit trees.

I HAVE seen dead settlers after I failed to show up for a defense, though, and even once when there was no defense quest but just a skirmish going on as I fast-traveled in. But I've yet to see a settler die. Is it the case that they only die when I'm not watching, or is there something else going on here?

Re: Stronger Defenses-

Remember that everything you build will have to be repaired sooner or later. Well, defenses-wise anyhow. The more (and more advanced) defenses you build, the more your ongoing cost in maintenance of those defenses. Might be just as well to max your CHA, build bottlenecks for potential invaders with no-repair structures (metal walls and such), and place a few settlers with good weapons in overwatch at those choke points. Also, the Commonwealth is LITTERED with landmines. Costs you nothing to pick one up and stow it, and costs you nothing to emplace it. Toss a few dozen extras in the workshop, and occasionally groom the mine garden.
