What justifies the 20% price increase for PC?

Post » Thu Aug 11, 2011 2:04 am

At the EB games I pre-ordered Skyrim at the game was 70 dollars, the same as most other games, and the price wasn't different on consoles

The price increase is kind of disappointing, but weren't the old 90s LucasArts adventure games (replayability limited to how soon you could forget) like $40 each? Daggerfall was something like $70 at its time too, not adjusted for inflation. I just think of those numbers when people complain about Skyrim's 20% increase in price seeming over the top

I can still find PC versions cheaper than console versions here in the UK. Plus there is a lot of justification anyway. The PC version is vastly superior.

Supply and Demand

Are you gonna buy it anyways, or wait a year until the price drops?

Maybe there is an increased price because Bethesda put a lot of hard work into it? For a game with 300+ hours of playing, I'd probably stop whining. Bethesda is the one getting ripped off here. They should be charging you at least $100 for a game like this.

Funny, because Bethesda is going for "equality between all platforms".

Battlefield 3 on PC must cost heaps more by this logic, as they try and make the game best for each single platform, which means a lot better on the PC, because of the obvious better hardware capabilities.

Right, but the consoles are different in that they're stock hardware. You only have to develop for one PS3. When you develop a game for PC, you have to account for the infinite variations in hardware and software players will have--invariably making it so some will see a better game (read: prettier) than someone on a PS3. It's just the nature of the technology.

Bethesda is going for equality.

Higher resolution options, more flexibility with modding, changing of various options to own's personal preference... PC is the choice if you have that great setup. I never imagined I would be playing TES on silly controllers... EVER.

And I couldn't imagine playing with a mouse and keyboard... EVER. Controllers are far more comfortable, and I couldn't go without anolog walking! Controller all the way.

I haven't seen many price differences myself, I would say it's the site.
And if it is true that the price is the same for consoles as it is for pc, I'll just buy it on Steam. I would prefer to have a "hard copy" of such an epic game, but Steam games are almost always cheaper.

It has nothing to do with Skyrim, or Bethesda itself, or PC vs. console.

There's a general price push starting on PC games. Since the beginning of the year, a number of games have hit the $59.99 price point, and the trend is increasing. It's not everywhere yet (a number of upcoming games on Steam are still $49.99), but I'd guess by next year's releases, they'll all be that way.

I expect console games to follow suit, but there's different market forces & decisions there - the increase to $69.99 might hold off for the jump to the next console gen (kind of like the jump to $59.99 happened when the X360/PS3 came out.)

edit: and they don't need any "justification" beyond 1) people will pay it, and 2) inflation. Costs go up, dollar value declines, the price gets passed on to the customer.

Or who knows, perhaps it's more of this "equal" crap. They look equal, they now cost equal? Despite them being unequal in reality. Lol ...

I was thinking the same thing. Since when did we start viewing console players as some oppressed lesser race who needs special attention? Yeah dude, apparently gamers look at platform socialism as a huge selling point for which developer to buy from. It's like those morons who base the entire presidential election on the candidates' stance on abortion and nothing else.

Bethesda should charge $60 for all of their 100+ hour games. The problem is that the industry charging $60 for games with far less content than Skyrim.

I'm fine with paying more for Skyrim, but I agree with Todd Howard's recent comments that gamers should be payng less for other, less complex games.

I'm going to ignore all the childish responses (I come from the Steam Forums, you simply CANNOT impress me with how childish you respond)

To those who've provided more mature points:

As far as the price goes, I'm looking at all major retailers. All platforms are $59.99 USD.

As for those asking me to feel sympathy for console gamers who are already paying that price; those are LICENSING fees by Microsoft/Sony. Your beef is with them. Imagine if Bethesda raised your game prices 20% to $71.99. That's basically what I'm discussing here.

Also, all games are developed ON PC first. They are developed with the console limitations in mind, and the builds are made for the console. Consoles are not computers; they don't have software compilers and other tools needed to build the game. It's not a question of porting costs; no developer has ever stated porting to cost them more money.

Also, it's not a question of whether the game is worth it or not. I'm SURE the game will be great. But if it's so great as to cause them to charge 20% more for PC, how come they don't do it across the board?

So its unfair that people who own consoles have to pay an equal amout of money?

Is being equal bad?

EDIT :Its [censored] disgusting that you want console users to have to pay more then you, is it petty. You can get alot of games for cheap on PC so why is it so bad that there is an extra 10 bucks?

Are you a child?

1. No game TO DATE has ever had as many hours of play as the dev said they did for an average gamer. Cut their estimate buy 2/3 (~100 hours) and that'd be more accurate.
2. It's already been said that this isn't a question of whether the game will be good; so making it a counterpoint again proves you can't pay attention, like a child.
3. With such an inept response and lack of any point made, you're significantly closer to a whiner than anyone asking a legitimate question.

Do ANY of you understand what a CONCEPT is? Simply AMAZING how far off the base question asked you guys have gotten.

THE CONCEPT IS "WHAT REASON ARE YOU RAISING PRICES ON ONLY 1 PLATFORM RATHER THAN ACROSS ALL 3?"

It's like a dev saying "From now on, we're charging 40% more for all XB360 titles we release" No reasons, no justifications. Of course players would want to know why.

I don't know. What justifies the belief of so many PC gamers that PC games have to be $50 for the rest of eternity? That raising the price of these games is a matter of "greed" and "consolization"? Makes little sense to me. Especially considering that it's only been within the past 15 years or so that this hard $50 standard has existed, and it was basically created by consoles, and it's a totally arbitrary figure in the first place.

Hahaha.

PC players are butthurt that they are on level ground with console gamers.

What justifies the price increase? What about the increased price for console games? What justifies that?

What justifies the fact that PC games are a good deal cheaper?

You are continually insulting members of this forum beacuse they are giving you awnsers you dont like, which is childish.

So the price raised, they dont ned to give you a reason. If i sell a product i do not need to explain my reasoning for the pricing. I could go into long talk about how supply and demand works and how products are set but im to lazy to do that.
