What justifies the 20% price increase for PC?

Post » Wed Aug 10, 2011 11:52 pm

First of all let me preface this by saying that Skyrim looks absolutely phenomenal. This isn't a question of whether I'm impressed with the game or not (because I am), but I have a question that comes down to respect.

Why exactly does Bethesda increase the price of the PC game from $49.99 up 20% to $59.99 without doing likewise to the console versions ($59.99 -> $71.99)?

If Bethesda had raised all games across the board, I would have taken this as "Bethesda feels the game's development warrants a more expensive game, so they adjusted the cost respectively." But instead, having just raised the PC version, and not giving it any unique features or content to justify this is, well, disrespectful. It's as if you see the PC community as nothing more than something to milk.

Is there anyone from Beth who is qualified to explain to me why this course of action was taken? EA is doing it with its titles, and I really was hoping that other devs/pubs wouldn't take to the same course of action.

Generally, the game costs $50 across platforms, but then Microsoft/Sony require $10 in licensing fees per game. PC doesn't have any licensing fees similar to this, so I'm left wondering what justifies the price hike.

So its unfair that people who own consoles have to pay an equal amout of money?

Is being equal bad?

EDIT :Its [censored] disgusting that you want console users to have to pay more then you, is it petty. You can get alot of games for cheap on PC so why is it so bad that there is an extra 10 bucks?

Like any price hike, They feel that the people would buy it. They're a company and they're selling a luxury so they ask for what they think the people are willing to pay.

I haven't seen this price difference myself, but I'd imagine it could be explained by the PC requiring extra development time required to port it and provide support for beefier rigs.

Not sure what you are talking about. Here it is 49,99 euros for PC and 59,99 for PS3 and 360.

I imagine the PC is the smaller market, in order for it to still be a profitable market, the price needs to go up.

No extra features or content? Such as, say, mods?

DUDE! PC users must pay for their games equal to console users!? And our version was always better!? RAGE I HATE BETHESDA THIS ISNT FAIR

Seriously stop whining. It makes sense that all versions cost the same. No, it would make more sense if the pc version costs more because you can create mods.

Funny, because Bethesda is going for "equality between all platforms".

Battlefield 3 on PC must cost heaps more by this logic, as they try and make the game best for each single platform, which means a lot better on the PC, because of the obvious better hardware capabilities.

PC users are paying extra because of Mods? mods that have been free with no strings attached for almost 10 years, Mods that where made possible at no cost to Bethesda -period-? that gave Morrowind and Oblivion the longevity they have now? I say Greed

The PC is the larger market actually, but there may be less sales due to a higher piracy ratio.

Which is precisely why price hikes are inadvisable. Reasonable pricing is a critical part of whether the average person decide to buy or pirate.

The Creation Kit? Version costs amortized over fewer purchases? More testing needed due to variable hardware?

As a gamer who doesn't own a console, I see no cause for complaint. Bethesda games give incredibly good value as a source of entertainment. However, if the game they are offering isn't worth the price in your eyes, I'd encourage you to spend your money elsewhere.

Indeed. Remember, all the game prices are preliminary until they are actually available for sale.

Also, the online store I usually buy from have different prices for the PC version of Skyrim and the console versions as usual.

and why should the PC game be cheaper anyways? we have never complained that our games are more expensive than yours. relax. its $10,

Console games are more expensive than PC games because they include license costs for Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo. Microsoft and Sony even sold their consoles at loss, and then make the money on the game sales.

Extra? They pay the same amount as console users. The same. It's an increase for a pc game, but hell I'd pay $80 for Skyrim. Their games are just THAT good.

Higher resolution options, more flexibility with modding, changing of various options to own's personal preference... PC is the choice if you have that great setup. I never imagined I would be playing TES on silly controllers... EVER.

my post was in response to those saying the price up (which I said if true) was because of Mods.

That would never be the case because mods are completely independent from Bethesda. Creation Kit is also done anyway for the developers and they use the same thing. Very minor modifications might be made to the released one, but definitely not so big that it would cost 20% more of the total income from a game.

Greed is most likely I think. Bethesda likez muney. Who doesn't?
Or who knows, perhaps it's more of this "equal" crap. They look equal, they now cost equal? Despite them being unequal in reality. Lol ...

You might want to ask the distributor you are buying from, because THEY make the prices, not Bethesda.

In Germany on Amazon.de it 55€ at the moment, which is actually 5€ less than usual. In UK it's about 30€ like always. So what?
